This was a big problem with Fortnite and other game forums where it was more obvious they were hoping to enact changes in updates to suit their play rather than some objective statement, but both were always spoken like objective statements

My honest thoughts, based on my own experiences with depression and creative output, is that he made a lot of big claims up front that he felt he couldn't match later. One example is him saying that he had all three books already written, and that they were just a prologue to a bigger series. Then it was a... 4 year gap between books 1 and 2? Despite him claiming it would be 1 book per year. Book 2 got less glowing reviews for multiple reasons. Book 3, if it was ever written, then fell into a perfectionist cycle of tweaking and retweaking and getting frustrated and then procrastinating. Eventually he hit a point of guilt, having not touched it for months or even years, where every reminder of its existence was also a reminder of his perceived failure.

And it's now gotten far enough that the idea of writing anything is overwhelming and guilt-inducing, so he just... doesn't.
