For one, it's infinite ammo, so you're supposed to spam it a lot more than guns

For two, staves deal with hordes (except EK)

There's two ways you can go about LMB spam

You can go the soulblaze route for horde clear and more power in dense groups, or the crit route for higher single target damage

Jumping can help grab taller targets. Trappers, flamers, bombers, shotgunners, etc. for surge/ EK RMB.

However, be warry the a thick horde that's about to be right up on you can be very difficult or too dangerous to try and get the single shotgunner that's in the middle of it. LMB might be better in that instance to suppress the shotgunner and give you a moment to figure out your next move (especially if there isn't cover nearby).
