Few things to keep in mind. The higher difficulty you go the more hp and dmg the mobs do. So in retro spec, you need better weapons to kill mobs as fast as lower diff. Second you need to be aware of your surroundings. See where the horde or elites are coming from. If you get caught off guard. You're dead. Even for a well-seasoned player.

You should not be in a horde from all sides.

My build works like this

Deploy shield to cover, this removes warp charges and allows you to generate peril quicker (which increases damage and crit chance)

Once you a high peril, because of "in fire reborn" you now have 6 warp charges with +36 peril resistence. So it allows you to stay at high peril for a long time

EP with fire shout and smite is just inferior to siphons in all the possible ways and the smite buff talents are not that worth it.

Here is the king of smite spam builds, if you want to focus more on surge staff drop battle meditation in favour of Perfect Timing but that only makes sense if your surge meets the guaranteed 1-2 shot breakpoints for all elites.

How do I use trauma, surge and the bubble staff?

in case you didnt know surge really likes flak since the secondary attack targets the base armor which is flak in a lot of enemies

I did it on a auric hearsay with the increased specialist mutator. Super easy

im still trying to get a full t4 flak t4 elite surge i tried with a bunch

for non crit one shots you need a staff with dam around 77% with 6 warp siphon charges and like 3+ perfect timing stats

its not an issue most times since it has a very high crit rate

have you tried using a duelling sword with kinetic deflection?

mk4 is particularly strong rn

if you bring a +3 stam curio you can block a ton and kite even daemonhosts with its great mobility

Chainsword is a work horse weapon and is good at dueling with several things

Dueling sword and electric staff are fun together

Venting Shriek doesn't matter for this penance, but you can use it

what you need to do is to spontaneously explode whenever you're at peril threshold of 100% (just use another peril-generating attack, you will enter the suic*de animation), and kill an elite with the explosion

you will be killed downed, though, and lose a wound if you get revived

Assail can hit both. BR can only hit weak spots. Smite can’t do neither crits nor weak spot hits
