Weapon for heavy attack horde clear, Heavy sword or relic blade if you know the combos. (most weapons have a heavy attack combo that is part of their horde clear)
Elite backstab is often with dueling sword or knife because their move speed allows you to get behind them faster

From a lot of varying experiences I think the magic happens when it's 1. a premade group of people for the whole thing and 2. overlord is playing chess while the rest are playing a character. Pubs kinda just fall apart a bit unless the objective is so clear cut. If the overlord can physically manifest as a character and just beef with people it's easy for skill to outpace the actual mechanics and give the overlord too much of an edge.
In Evil Dead I played necromancer, and you could spawn units/totems or manifest as an enemy you directly control. That latter bit got so fucked when you could just possess an elite and start throwing stuff at players, because you can now target weak links and robust people.
Unfortunately, the only times I've seen these goldilocks conditions met is either with fnaf fangames or roblox, one is niche p2p stuff and the other is roblox.
