it's got a lot of great things going for it
by far the best day 1 release of a big RPG I've played since skyrim
it dethrones skyrim in some other ways too, namely item clutter (your personal chest holds 250 slots and you get ~75 before expansions, and both of mine are chock full)
(your camp storage holds 1000)
and they all have uses too
things that made other games GOAT in other genres, like say horses and horseback riding in RDR2, feels like a straight copy paste of what worked without all the mission creep bloat that made em frustrating
combat's somewhere in the same vein as witcher 3 and shadow of war, very nimble flipkicky take on unironically 40 guys at once
but the danger's still there the whole time if you don't manage the fight like you have to in say space marine 2, you're only ever ten seconds from death
grand theft auto style crime and baboonery's perfectly represented too, there are some initially annoying hard stops to some things but they eventually make sense in the wider context of the crime and punishment system

there are some gripes in that respect, I'm sure it's tied to that stability but any item you drop will vanish forever in about a hundred meters of movement

combat is full of momentary quicktime event opportunities, like you can perfect block an attack that legitimately connected with you because you didn't have your guard up or it was in theback
lots of attacks will feed into other attacks, and there's a full on grapple/unarmed/professional wrestling side to it too
it actually feels really organic to use, it's what I'm spending most of my points on vs upgrading my weapon stab/spin/slash skills
so far enemies have been packs of smols like 5 on the low end to unironically 50 in a bandit camp clear, peppered with you-sized actual fighters and bigger than you with more souls style combat mechanics
death's nothing, there are consumables to get right back up there for a cost or immediately to the closest checkpoint
I think because you're gonna be dying a lot lot through the campaign
and all this is available to you immediately, I unironically have not even gone to the first tavern to talk to the first guy to get the first mission in the storyline going
this first nation you start in is prolly the size of skyrim, maybe bigger
and there are like 5 or 6 not including the actual crimson desert
prolly heresay but the guy that got me into it said right at release someone just got on their horse and fucked off down the road to find the far corner of the game world, and it took them two or three hours of travelling to get there
but having tried goin from this starter, through just one nation on a beeline, to right at its far border before calling it, I believe it
I spent all night getting through just one nation past the starter one, but I was taking it all in and exploring for the first time
there's a whole citybuilder-factionbuilder side to it too, crafting and trade goods and actually getting the wagons with the boxes to the destination, agriculture and companions that all have their own gear and abilities and and and
it's frankly a disgusting amount of content
like I said, best day-one release of a major title I've played in a decade
and the more I play the more I'm convinced this game actually dethrones skyrim as the GOAT of rpgs
oh and much more important than any of that, every animal you come across that isn't wild/feral can be brought around to trusting you, and adopted to follow you around like a warcraft social pet with lil quality of life abilities like picking stuff up for you
