Throwing knives are great yeah haha. Even better on combat knife because getting stacks of uncanny strike (basically stacks of armor piercing on weakspot hits) it applies to throwing knives as well, great for more heavily armored enemies. Throwing knives also have the added benefit of animation cancels on swapping to the flamer or bolter!
That being said, I’m in the same boat where the flamethrower I’m not crazy about. It scales with difficulty though, you’re going to get a lot more use out of it on like damnation and auric

generalist flamer is usually flak and maniac damage for perks and overpressure with blaze away for blessings, but you can also do an armor hate flamer for crusher hordes that has carapace and flak for perks with penetrating flames and blaze away for blessings. you can use the primary attack to stagger ragers / trappers and knock away groups dogs and bursters safely at range through hordes which is pretty valuable, or just make some room to use your braced attack. The braced attack leaves you vulnerable because it slows you down, but you can still dodge or chastise to reposition while brace firing
