I just like feeling what that kind of control scheme communicates. It's like weird for people's intuition though you know?

I think that it's a harder sell for people that especially don't have wider experiences with video games beyond some of the safest types of games like Asscreed, recent god of war games, Arkham batman games, 2018 spider man and the inevitable Spiderman 2, even space marines 2. That base of design choices are fine and their own sauce and fwiw it's a flexible enough core that devs that actually push and pull it well enough for the rest of the experience to carry the day (think ghost of tsushima not doing too many new things but having a stellar polish to its art direction and story pacing).

Godhand's closest most recent sort of distant relative is like Sifu when I think about it. But Sifu is far closer to those safer conventions that the industry has promoted and milked further.

Tank controls are just so ironed out of people's consciousness that the only time I think it's acceptable to people's curated tastes is like vehicles in games with tank control features compared to what the re remakes did. And for people who don't branch out much from their game choices, a polished tank control scheme, regardless of how much better it is than the og version, is still gonna have to put up with a consumer base that has been very very much steered away from taking on different control conventions. The feedback of tank controls genuinely takes time to play with let alone recognize.

Overall I agree that it should not be a disqualifying factor and would hope that people would be able to look past it (this is a pipedream). But I'd still like to see them mess with the control schemes of some of these older games if they get a remake to try and make the controls more intuitive than they are so that people don't have that barrier to entry. The unfortunate thing about games anymore is that they have become so standardized in terms of controls and mechanics that any tweaks at all begin to throw up flags in players brains about something being weird/unfamiliar and because it's a leisure activity, most people won't take the time to try and adjust before making the snap decision of "this feels unfamiliar and unfamiliar = bad." This is not to discount some of the crackhead shit that devs do (why the fuck was mouse acceleration on by default in most games untill like 2018), but these old games with great mechanics should have the effort put into them to remove what barriers to entry they present.

Unfortunately for me, I've had to accept that what the market promotes as the norm and milks as a standard eventually becomes the sort of like artificially cemented norm that inspires and informs others to do the same eventually. I think it's a formula that deserves to be broken up, but I don't have faith in AAA's ever wanting to consider that risk. And if it ever did pop off? Oh fuck it's about to get crazy.

But a modernizing of godhand could probably work well. I guess at that point my bigger concern would be what the hell is going to be done about the actual challenging aspects of the game because as much as people claim to want challenge in games, I feel like there's a disconnect with what people believe difficulty is and what difficulty can actually be in all its forms.

I'd say that they definitely on the more masc end of things with bigger versions of what Vi would be often being slotted as minor characters, characters destined to die, etc. But I'd need to really challenge that and actually dig into the depth therein so I'll it at that. There's a bit of cynical shallowness that comes with some of the more controlled narratives surrounding those kinds of lesbians in interactive media like games that I really believe is worth more constantly engaging with).

On the end of the harms of the stereotyping, yes, that's 100% a problem. What that signals to me personally though, is a lack of familiarity with what that representation has been, how it's handled, how it's steered by industry standards and how people even begin to talk to start talking about it.
