Another tell for proximity to DH is when the border of your screen rimes over. The closer you are the more it grows. If you play with subtitles on, operatives within the strike team will have voice lines talking about the DH before and after pings. You can also tell where a DH is more directly by the sort of mottled curl on the floor they occupy when they aren't in their warning stage of alertness.
Fatshark has been pretty intentional about all the additional visual and audio cues for their enemies in the game. Helps to just know that especially if one has auditory problems or in your case, just playing the game with enough background noise that'll cover other important audio cues.
