it wasnt the balancing that made hd2 lose players, it was the game released and managed to hit fotm status and games that hit fotm status see very sharp drops in playercount no matter what because many people just quickly move on to next big game

Well that's the thing. A lot of people often see something like zoning as exclusively keep away when you have characters with zoning-friendly kits or explict zoning as their primary design. Elphelt is certainly capable of doing so, but her primary method of controlling space in thia regard is just pinning people down and blowing them up.

Then you got happy chaos who represented a type of zoner that's rare as hell these days save certain franchises.

I used her ranged options more to annoy my opponent and force them in/make mistakes. i always lost against people that actually knew what they were doing though tbh, I maybe won 10/50 matches. im just not very good at fighting games

Fighting games just take time. They're definitely a genre heavily predicated on players curious or interested enough figuring things out over time. The time sink is just much much longer compared to something like an fps.

Luckily, fighting games are in a sort of 2nd renaissance currently and this is coinciding with a scale and scope of information and players generationally developing themselves so the information age just juiced up people's ability to get better faster.

And plenty of modern games are much easier too and often are more likely to be designed in a way as to make the floor for the fighting game much easier to stand on.
