There can be OTC products that help break down debris and cerumin (ear wax). Some DIY methods can work but I advise caution via some extra cursory research into what certain things can do within the ear before trying.
Other methods like ear flushing exist too but you'll just have to look it up.

The main issue with q tips is the design of them. The skin internsl tissue of the ear is very sensitive to irritation and possible infection from residue that doesn't always get flushed out from routine ear wax break off (which is a core function of ear wax and one of the reasons why it's good for humans within limits).
The frayed pieces of a tip can get lost inside the ear, not be removed by natural means and end up decaying because it too is organic matter.
