A post on Reddit shows some examples in a poorly edited video of the suspected AI voices being used. It has the usual problems with AI-generated voices, in that the machine underneath the tech actually has zero idea what it’s supposed to be doing other than guesstimating what it’s supposed to sound like. It results in voices either cutting off, weird inflections, or pausing when it isn’t given a comma. It also can’t seem to pronounce “Buried City”, referring to it as “Bird City”.

AI voice generation has gotten far and away more impressive from the initial days, like 15.ai. However, once you hear the imperfections and common problems with the software’s output, it’s easier to pick up. Once mixed amongst different audio tracks and the like, it becomes harder, obviously, but the point still remains: why not hire voice actors?

There’s no given reason outside of that podcast from 2023. Embark’s reasoning then was that using AI voices made them far more flexible in the development process. If an idea came up, they could just generate a voice and plop it into The Finals.

At the time, voice actors on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that they’re actually quite flexible too. (It’s hard to drag those posts up now, as one Elon Musk has driven a lot of the users away, the accounts with them.) With modern setups, some voice actors never actually enter a proper studio for the roles, able to do it from home on the fly. It’s not a months-long thing to hire a voice actor, especially in 2025, where, if you look around us for five minutes, a lot of people would be thankful for the work and do a better job than what an AI can.

Maybe it’s flexibility, maybe it’s a cost-saving measure, all I know is that Arc Raiders will make enough cash from its $39.99 price tag to cover the costs of voice actors. Surely, right?
