Tempted to try out a hammer build, from my relic sword.

So, if you really wanna deal with them with ease…

Take heavy eviscerator. Make sure you have the bloodthirsty blessing on it.

Rev the eviscerator, do a heavy attack and let it stick to the crusher (you’ll see it grinding/sparks flying). After it sticks, use your fury of the faithful charge if you’re using that. If you’re using chorus, just rev and attack again, since it will probably take 2-3 rev attacks to kill a crusher.

Once you kill one, however, bloodthirsty will make your next attack on a special enemy be an auto crit. You can start killing crushers with one rev attack each after that.

Mixed with stun grenades you should be able to single handedly kill a patrol!

I run thunder hammer as well, which works good as well. Just make sure you take thrust blessing, where the longer you charge your heavy attack, the more damage you do

And if you want to soften them up before you get into melee, take bolter and dump clip into the patrol first

Be careful with thunder hammer. I find it can be a bit inconsistent with its killing potential against crushers. Sometimes you’ll kill in one hit, other times if you don’t hold your heavy attack down long enough it make take a couple. Just don’t throw yourself into a bad situation chasing kills on them. I find if I can’t kill a crusher in one hit, I dodge out of melee range, recharge your hammer and then wait for an opening

Anytime I try to stay in combat to fish that one extra hammer hit to killl a crusher, I get punished for it

For me, the only issue I really have is the blatant dismissal of what less used options are actually capable of doing. I'm still personally working on getting up to Havoc 40 because I just always like getting to endgame for games I'm interested enough in, but there really are just genuinely useful enough weapons and talent spreads that do indeed get things done.

The main use that meta whatever has (especially when I just happen to like it too) for me is to just more broadly understand what are the pieces of a build that allow it function at the level of higher difficulties I want and what is that experience actually like to learn and utilize.

Meta is always going to be relevant and in plenty of ways undeniably a better way to play the game. There's also just other ways to play the game that really not putting people in the most miserable conditions with gameplay and I think that some really refuse to acknowledge that.

Then again, my rule of thumb is: unless I'm actually struggling against the flow of my own build even after familiarity and execution, then I'm just going to keep running it if I want.

For me, I have a similar opinion. If I want to push endgame/high skill content, I follow the meta until I get good enough at that level. Once that level becomes easy/im not struggling as much, that’s when I’ll play around with unconventional builds and approaches.

My gripe more comes from people shitting on a person who wants to break that mould.

Any class' skill floor and skill ceiling vary greatly depending on the build

Up to you what vibe you want to go for. I'd say fotf gives you more chances to make up for mistakes and recover from eating shit too quickly to stay in the fight. Shroudfield does the same thing as well principally but much better for saving oneself from catastrophic consequences. You'll just have to play differently slightly keep that shroudfield cdr healthy for your needs.
