In VT2 there's a Zealot character who gets stacking buffs the closer you are to death. Death is defined as your actual hp, or green hp. In VT2 you have talents that restore HP that decays, called temp hp. The playstyle with this is to be incredibly aggressive in order to keep temp HP stacked, and the longer you are out of combat the lower hp is. You always had to be in combat to keep the buffs from your build. Chip damage was mitigated by temp hp massively, since every 40 hp chip you would take could be restored in a swing or a dead elite. This made you effectively unkillable if you played well.

This isn't present with Marty in darktide because chip damage still does damage through less than 100% toughness. The reward for aggression isnt there in the form of temporary hp and you keep the buffs out of combat, which reinforces avoiding engagements to reduce the chance you take some chip and go down. For maximum buffs you would need to be at nearly the oneshot threshold at most difficulties, especially in Havoc. Not the case in vt2 unless you were playing Cataclysm
