It's only good for player strength, which does not equate to good design. Some segments may as well just be checklists for talents you want, it betrays half of the reasons the trees were designed this way in the first place.

It's quite doable to make a balance where complicated pathing offers cool optimization challenges for players willing to go that route, while still allowing for simple builds that can just take a path of preference down and branch out to some extra talents that look cool.

The trees are quite literally modular for this purpose. It creates a multitude of ways to balance out talents without just changing the talent itself. Take Duelist and the crit build on Zealot for example, it'd be simple to just nerf Duelist but an alternative is designing the tree around making Duelist a commitment when running a crit build. That way it's still strong, but it restricts freedom in trade. The opposite works too, stuff that is generalist or just a bit tame can be made readily available so easily.

The issue being that newer designs tend to employ the latter for everything. With the 'hourglass hip' pathing seen on the post-core talent pathing designs and the condensed talent clusters, everything is accessible and branching is either free or only 1 point.
