i think one such situation is when you're using an auspex
or putting one of those skulls on an objective to hack it
there's then a 'dot_threshold' which is 0 by what i'm looking at here, which is checked to see if it is less than the dot product of the attack direction and the attacked unit forward direction
this roughly means I think that if backstabs are allowed, you are (generally) backstabbing someone if you are within 90 degrees of their facing direction on a flat 2D plane
regardless if the position of your hitboxes, where you are located, or anything really
you can backstab someone behind you if you're facing the same direction as them and can somehow hit them with melee

@remote lark so basically it takes both you and the enemy facing directions(your positions DO NOT MATTER, only your facing). It then takes the cosine of the angle between the two directions. It's 1 if they have the same direction, 0 if they're at 90 degree angles, and -1 if they have opposite angles.

For flanking(AKA ranged backstab): any value above 0 is fine. So your facing needs to be less than 90 degrees of where the person you're attacking is facing.
@remote lark then for melee backstabs(what you are worried about). First off the attack direction is the direction from your location to the hit unit's location. If the cosine of that direction and the enemies rotation direction is above 0.5, it's a melee backstab.

how so? Flanking(for ranged) is a 180 degree arc behind their facing. Backstab(for melee) is a 120 degree arc behind.

Gunner resist is good, there is no such thing as perfect slides always, you can get fucked sometimes by surprise reapers and such
uncanny resistance can be somewhat overkill as you'd only need about 14.5% rending I believe for a dueling sword to deal 100% damage to flak, and while carapace can use up to 50% rending it's not terribly needed and brittle/rending from other sources camn work
i did somewhat forget the overkill rending ratio tho :x
