Zarona Revolver really is the best at what it does. Bolt Pistol is okay, since the bleed blessing can compensate for hitting bodyshots or helping reach breakpoints.
But throwing knives are great for that too, and they can be used to animation cancel the long draw times of Bolter or Flamer, so you could go with one of those for ranged. Depends on your choice of melee weapon too (e.g. using Bolter with Heavy Sword to make up for poor damage vs Carapace)
The early Zealot talents and lack of any Grenade replenishment steer most builds hard toward Throwing Knives anyways

Doing the twins fight special operation or the rolling steel mission should both be short enough to easily finish in under 20, just keep in mind you must have less than 1 wound 75% of the time so using a martyr build with high wounds may make it harder

Also if you really want grenades (which I can't really recommend), Bolt Pistol with Lethal Proximity increases their radius (unless that has been fixed recently). I also feel like a Bolt Pistol with Surgical is really just being used as a worse Revolver, and Glory Hunter is for Veteran Supportmaxxing memes. Puncture helps hit breakpoints, helps compensate when you hit body instead of head, and can start things bleeding for Scourge

I like flame grenades to help with horde clear since the hammer is pretty bad at it (I also have to suffer through the fucking penance)
Flame grenades just give me a lot more room to work with from what I have seen and makes it so I can hit those overheads on the actual meat in the mixed hordes more consistently.
I'll mess around with bleed a bit more, I've just been really loving the toughness for clutching scenarios where I'm pinned by tons of ranged elites.
From what I can see this only gives me the healing on Until Death and knifes. I'll give it a shot once I'm done with the flame nade penance

Yes, especially for bolter. It is slow to draw, so if you need to kill a special quickly you can throw a knife at it instead. You can also throw a knife to speed up the bolter draw time by canceling the animation. Plus the grenades themselves kind of suck and the talents that lead to them are underwhelming (whereas Second Wind, which is awesome, is right before throwing knives)
With practice you can reliably land one-hit-kill headshots on most specials and even use it against snipers

Thy Wrath Be Swift is awesome, you should always take it (especially with slow/chain/power weapons). Yes you can succeed without it but it still feels great, legit helps a LOT when you mess up.
Good Balance is decent if you just have one point left. Punishment doesn't do much, if anything, if you're not taking it on the way to Invocation of Death and/or Blazing Piety
