you can easily control hordes with melee on every character, even ones that dont actually clear them well, with just pushes, dodges, and any funneling you can reasonably do, youll quickly find that theyre the least threatening thing in the game
throwing knives are mostly used for 3 reasons

- theyre faster than pulling out a gun while youre meleeing, and can one shot every specialist besides mutants to the head, dont even need ammo cuz melee kills on elites/specialists give you one back
- they free up your gun slot to use it for a more specific purpose, such as a flamer or bolter
