Hard to contrive a reason for many different races to be fighting that hard over one planet. Then again 40k has never really valued good writing and 40k video games even less so.
Dark Crusade for example:
- Imperium fighting to retake a world previously lost to the Tau
- Also the world has a population of Orks that just got taken over by an especially cunning and ambitious Warboss
- Also the world has a Necron tomb and they were just woken up by all the noise
- Also the Eldar are there because some prophecy told them to
- Also Chaos is there because some prophecy told them to
- Also Space Marines are a separate faction because Blood Ravens are a bunch of dickheads and are led by secret traitors (though I guess the Grey Knights attached to their chapter found no evidence of such)
To that we could add:
- Dark Eldar are there for the lulz
- Tyranids are there because they see biomass and don't care that it's a Necron tomb world
- However many Imperium and Chaos subfactions you want because 40k is Fascist Space Marines vs Satanic Space Marines and everything else is window dressing
