flesh tearer is the blessing pick when you're able to proc crits constantly. Take Scourge and Piety keystone

Lacerate doesnt do any notable damage on a non critfishing knife to even justify having it, since you're killing things faster stabbing than what the bleed damage can do.

Fleshtearer is viable with lots of crit like Mal said, since with scourge, 1 crit is 10 bleed on a target you already chunked to the head

And uncanny allows you to be safe and bleed a crusher pack to death in addition to just obliterating their health with 100% rending heavy headshots

This is also on top of crits having the same multipler (both at once making you deal like 5-6x damage) as headshots so stacking crit is already great

Those multipliers are also why a riposte/precog knife can kill a boss in a few headshots due to the massive 60% finesse bonus (plus duelist)

Mercy killer only applies to the weak spot bonus part so it will be more like +30-40%

Rending is way better for Carapace and Flak helmets

You can set everything on fire then swap to the knife and get Rending stacked quickly with some light attacks

Throwing knives inherit uncanny too

Bleed stacks very quickly either way, and the tradeoff is consistency. Lacerate isn't maximum potential efficiency but it's going to be consistent and reliable versus Flesh Tearer. I guess you bring up a good point that crit is rather easy to stack on the knife so as to make Lacerate pretty low value when compared to Flesh Tearer.

It's more that zarona can hit through 6 targets, allowing you to hit a trapper in a horde for example, as well as killing 6 shotgunners standing in a line
It also has higher outright damage, especially armor damage (and surg/hc also exists, which benefits more from the higher raw damage)
And the actual hit box of the projectiles it shoots are like tree logs so you rarely have to worry about missing, even on far away snipers
