Their design philosophy with melee variants has stuff like Crucis where the role of lights and heavies are very solid, then they make a varied moveset variant where you use mixed combos for ST and horde clear. In this case Ironhelm got a cleave light and an overhead heavy.

The only thing I see there as plausible is #3, where the OG Ironhelm had like 2.5 cleave on the special. ik some people complained about the Crucis when they skillissued but like, it wasn't really a mainstream complaint of the weapon. It was well regarded as a good weapon that was the king of boss nuking.

To top it off, again, Ironhelm lines up with the pattern of most other weapon families.
