Move phase: move models up to their movement, or choose to advance (move further but cant shoot)
Shooting phase: shoot gun
Charge phase: select if any units will charge into melee
Melee phase: roll melee combat
All attacks and abilities requires you roll a d6 dice per thing you are doing
I.e. a guardsman squad of 20 guys would need you to roll 20d6 to represent each model shooting

Roll to hit (each model has a ballistic skill value, which is the number you need to roll, or higher)
You then roll to see if you wound (this is based on the strength of the gun vs the toughness of the unit being hit)
The enemy then rolls an armour roll to see if they survive (unless you have enough armour piercing to remove the save roll)
So as an example a guardsman with a lasgun hits a marine on a +4, wounds on a +5 and the space marine saves on a +3

It literally acts as a 2nd health bar that also stops you from getting staggered or slowed and as long as it's up you can't get 1shot by ANYTHING
and even if it goes down it only takes a few seconds to go back up and then all of a sudden you can tank another rocket or charger to the face even if the shield itself is like 1 hp
