The idea behind it is a bulking DPS tool. The best you can get are spread reduction buffs and using a throwing knife to cancel the pullout.
Something else that can help is maximizing the utility of the shots. It feels really clunky if you have to shoot twice to kill specials and some small elites.
It's easier to fix this on Vet than it is on Zealot though.
