I'm a very moderate skill player -- it competes very evenly with psykers on damn hi-intense. Also got to eat all the ammo here -- so --that isn't always a thing. It sustains really well if you are playing with ammo hungry classes and shoot in conservative bursts. It'll comfortably drop 3 or 4 ragers in a mag. It's a very safe weapon to use when you are being pushed by elites and specials with a mixed horde as the closer things are the faster they die. In terms of raw potential damage by ammo load there isn't much that really even compares for non-carapace enemies -- except the agri brauto. Somewhat comically the advantage is that it does less damage so you aren't overkilling trash enemies; that is the tradeoff for penetration.

Toughness regen has limits. There is "tension damage" that floats through the amount of toughness damage and drains you health even when toughness hasn't broken. The severity of tension damage amps up with each jump in difficulty. At the end of the day you just really, really don't want to get hit. If yer a scoreboard person I don't think it is necessarily damage done that is the most important all around stat. Elites, specials, resources used -- and -- damage taken. Correct me if I'm wrong -- I'm fairly certain I've looked at the code specific to that.

A couple trash guys behind a team consistently is IMO worse then getting shot to hell -- so long as you get out of the line of fire before your toughness breaks.

It's a lot easier to see on heresy and lower difficulties. You'll never have your toughness broken and still take some damage to health if you take a few melee hits. The damage numbers are a lot lower, so it's more likely your toughness won't just break.

With enemy density it's not a huge issue. You can pop a slug in, shroudfield, then immediately shoot it and it'll work. With smth like a SS/Wrath + Shred Chainsword you can get it back up pretty fast.
