You weren't wrong in saying that veteran can specialize in ranged builds and be effective because you'd have a real point there that well...a good amount of information peeled through for how ever atp is there to show how one can put it together.

But they're also right in saying that for where this game ends up going, veteran is not exactly the class getting away with the greatest variety and at times potency compared to scum and psyker. Whether or not someone outpaces someone means little when there's proof on proof on what psyker is just capable of as a class with the greater variety of ranged gameplay by design. And scum really is encouraged to go hard into its ranged when built that way because it actually does want to go all out with it and actually has the design enabling the play.
