I use the recon lasgun and combat knife on my veteran. Both of these weapons have very high single target DPS, the only bad thing about that combination is that you can struggle a bit with very big groups of enemies like ragers, but it's not impossible. And at medium range, the recon lasgun can even hold it's own against hordes

The usual argument I hear is that weight of fire is anti-synergy with surgical but I find that they just cover two different situations: when you're scanning for tragets/waiting for them to peek/come out from around corners, and when the crusher+rager wave is barreling down in the open

Zealot can technically dish out more melee dps but the contingencies of doing that with their talents are way stricter so it actually doesn't play out that way unless you're running martyrdom maybe.

And there's a caveat to running martyrdom obviously.

Vet gets beefed just for playing the game and they get beefed a lot

Zealot just has the edge in raw survivability in most cases.

If you really put them both against each other, Zealot does edge them out in that regard. The issue, is that Zealot just doesn't have as much burst damage potential or utility to get them out of sticky situations like vet does.

Oh and higher raw stats and better stamina regen.
