Don't let the weapon spec ranged bonus fools you, you can still use Recon XII and do fine. But if you want a little tech, with wep spec bonus you can light up one bulwark with infernus and let it die (just dont hit the shield). It's not like if you pick weapon spec you are forced into mk2 revolver or something.
The main reason for me to go wep spec is to be on par on stronger than Zealot in melee.

If you want to truly embrace the glass cannon lifestyle you can go the entire left side of the tree for the bonus ranged damage

But not having toughness and upgraded home-made krak grenades is... rough

As for the dump stat on the gun's percentages, I'd suggest this

I don't know why I own this because I feel guilty whenever I don't take a plasma gun or a bolter, but I own this, and occasionally bust it out when helping newbros level up

In general the game always feels like it encourages this start

As long as the magazine lasts anyway. You shouldn't use it like the rec lasgun cause it's less ammo efficient and you usually can't use it for 95% of the game like the lasgun if you're sharing ammo. It's better at melting ranged elites that need to die now

It's faster than any of them, more accurate than the bolts and has more kills per magazine than the revolvers.
Of course it isn't the only weapon to do it's job but it has a great blend of qualities imo

this is what I'm rolling with for the infantry lasguns at the moment if it helps. highly recommend bringing along a melee weapon which can handle Carapace as that's kind of a weakpoint with it. (folding Shovels are my personal pick but combat axes and powerswords seem to fit the bill)
