There are plenty of events if you're willing to come to Portland!
definitely am, SCA is on my list for next year for sure, got permission from the boss 😉
Oregon Gang
Oregon gang!
Eyyyy
I probably have the saddest grinder out of any coffee head in the bend area
But I'm still here!
eyyy Bend!
awesome
its not sad if it works
and are you enjoying your coffee? thats the most important part right
what grinder is it?
for espresso i use a sozen hand grinder
machine is a gaggia classic
Oh nice!
it works
atleast my portafilter is nice. i have a nice distro tool and tampers
one day ill get a decent grinder
Here is the place to ask, super great community
ive been eyein up a niche but cant justify the price
Definitely ask around in the grinder thread for recs
Is there a schedule or calendar? Definitely up for coming for portland
not that ive seen, but if you follow Coava, Sterling, Deadstock, Upperleft and some other cafes/roasters in town ok instagram, they post community events all the time!
Just saw there is a commandante hand grinder on FB marketplace for $150 in bend
do you already have a handgrinder?
Just a sozen hand grinder
happy with it?
It "works"
Am i happy no
I should also note my entire coffee and tea station has been pieced together. It's the only thing I have that grind fine enough for espresso
Takes a long time
But it also grinds fine enough to make Turkish coffee
Yeah handgrinding for espresso is a job in itself geez
I do hook a drill to mine and run it at a low speed. I don't need to destroy it
Not much here. Maybe one or two days a week
We need to get some more Bend people in here and grab some coffee
id love to try some lone pine on pourover, they always have drip so i might try that next time im in
what are your favorite local ones?
Oof that's a hard one. I normally just do thump or palate
But when I go out I usually get a cortado
what do you thin of lone pine and backporch
Haven't had lone pine. Backporch was meh when I went.
I normally don't trust the recs from most people. Those are the same people who recommend dutch bros and kevista
But for me thump is my favorite
hahah ok dutch bros no, kevista is only good because they stock ocean rolls
their coffee is very meh
speaking of, my wife just brought me an ocean roll home
I've never bought one
im actually a cinnamon roll or bearclaw kinda guy but the ocean rolls have converted me
I just can't justify the price for them when a breakfast burrito is the same
But then again I'm not a breakfast guy
I'd rather get a coffee or two then lunch later
im not fussed about breakfast at home, but ny favorite thiing to go out for is breakfast
well ok i take that back, breakfast doesnt excite me if i make it myself, otherwise if its made for me, its my favorite meal of the day
ahh for me most breakfast foods dont do anything for me
im a luch and dinner man
ill even eat dinner for breakfast
breakfast meats generally are overly salty, potatoes are solid but mostly not enough veggies for me
I need to find the good breakfast spots here. My favorite breakfast sandwich is the vegetarian plus bacon from sisters coffee at old mill
A good burger for breakfast is always a solid idea
Right? I can get on board with that
What Pourover do you have? I just got the switch and its a game changer
I have a few v60 clones, chemex, French press, Turkish cezve, French press, moka pot and my gaggia classic machine
Oh youre kitted out haha dang
Id like to try to get a few more people from the reddit thread in here and do a coffee meetup
I mostly started because of tea. I've got probably close to a dozen yixing tea pots. Then I realized maybe coffee can be better than folgers. Here we are 10 years later. Really the thing I'm lacking is a good grinder I feel. Once I find my good deal ill be decent. Then it will be pid time for the gagia
Have you looked at the k6 hand grinder?
Its usually $100 on amazon
Yeah but I think I'm done hand grinding
Don’t blame you
Currently takes me 2.5 minutes to get 22 grams
Post in #grinders for suggestions for your budget they will be super helpful
Thats how i decided on mine
haha fair fair!
Encore ESP is probably the answer you’re looking for
I've been looking at the niche or a 270wi
If you wanna come by some time and try it out a bit I can make that work. It technically belongs to Intelli, not me, but my space is over near Wilson and 3rd. DM if you’re interested
Totally, just factoring in price point is all.
Million percent!
It does seem like the esp is the best budget friendly grinder out there. People seem to love it
Really anything is better than hand grinding at this point
I’ve actually switched to hand grinding at home and has been fine. 🤷♂️ just leave the DF on filter grind and hand grind for spro.
I think the c40 is still on FB Marketplace in bend for $150, been on for a while
If he eventually drops it and no-one else grabs it i might because im a man obsessed.
which is why i made a b-line for bana
150 isn't a bad price for it but it's not a screaming deal yet
I saw it on there this morning I believe
K6 and Q2 essentially are c40
just pulled an s tier shot out of the machine
7pm spro
i must balance the indica some how.
but in all actuality i can sleep right after some coffee. even directly after
Im finding after getting used to the caffeine i can drink quite late too
I was bouncing off the walls last night after consuming more than i normally do in a short amount of time yet its the first night i went to bed at 11pm and slept straight through to 6am
Normally I'll do one last one around 8pm. Seems to be a nice relaxer to the day
Hell yeah Oregon is greeeeeat
Absolutely it is!
But you left 🥹
I also left once. Hopefully that was the last time 🤞
Yeah dont leave lol
I had to
I regret it every time i have to pump my own gas
Which is never cause i make my bf so it 🤣
I miss Oregon 🥲 will be coming back soon for Thanksgiving!!!
you can pump your own gas here now
but i wont lol
also i havent actually found anywhere that doesnt have attendees
i have been spoiled
Heya Oregonians!
I'm headed back this week and wondering if anyone is up for a brief morning coffee get together in Portland on Friday the 10th.
I'll be over by the airport for breakfast, but up to popping over to somewhere worth visiting if there's a recommendation or intersection for a little social time.
Lemme know!
i do love portland coffee
That moment you hit such a good pull but on your second to last shot
Anyone want to do a meetup this Saturday morning? Thinking about just a coffee swap meetup. Or coffee giveaway meetup (I have a lot of stuff). Will be back in portland for the weekend. Thinking SuperJoy/Heart/Roseline, open to suggestions
I would but I'm personally central oregon. Mad jealous of the meetup!
may or may not happen. There are quite a few coffee people in central OR/bend honestly
True but not portland level
That would be dope. At some point soon i want to do a meetup and it feels like Portland is the right place to do it?
Busy assimilating into American culture this weekend otherwise i would have probably been down 😦
We can still do one in bend. A cross post to reddit maybe worthwhile
too bad bend is still a drive out from eugene/portland. i love bend tho they have the best fucking biking trails and that was like my childhood spring break spot
Yeah we should defintiely do a Bend one, i tried to drum up some interest before on r/Bend, we should try to revive that and out the coffee nerds
yeah its dope. Moved 3 months ago from Austin and its just a totally different experience
turkey is in the brine
Yo does Heart have anything good rn? I saw they have Benjamin paz but anything else?
What is heart for my uneducated ass over here
Ahh. I'm assuming they are worth trying
I would say Heart and Superjoy might be the best in portland. I like Roseline a lot too. Heart roasting is good but sometimes when i go to the cafe i feel like theyre not reaching the potential that they could. So i just buy their beans and brew at home. I really love them and kinda want to get some before i come back to cali
Taste of home
:/
I need some good decaf in my life
How is the Benjamin Paz at heart? Visiting family in pdx for a few days so considering dropping by
S&w decaf, los suenos decaf by passenger. Top tier
I'm curious about the ben paz too. Really really good green, and historically heart roasts their premium stuff well. But i personally havent tried heart ben paz (yet)
Ive actually never had a bad heart roast, but have had mid-dialed in cafe experience
I'll probably go tomorrow, so I can report back.
available in bend?
Just order online super easy
They're not serving the Benjamin Paz in the Cafe =(.
I did buy a bag tho.
yo
portland people whaddup
is there anywhere in the metro where i can buy coffee from euro roasters?
Adapt cafe
They sell 3fe
3fe is from Dublin
outstanding
thanks very much
when visiting friends/family in seattle i would usually make a stop at sound and fog and load up on manhattan and friedhats, etc
In pdx for the next two days and looking for some quality. Picked up some Proud Mary earlier today, but wouldn’t mind visiting some other shops while in town. Any recommendations for modern light/medium stuff?
i think its a tea night
me and my lab are in Oregon. Always happy to have visitors
Lab as in dog or laboratory?
Where abouts in Oregon?
YOOO anyone going to be in Portland on the 7th and 8th of Feb?
I just got back from Portland today
what was the drive like? i feel like i need to get traction tires. all weather ones wont cut the drive i dont think
Today they were required
If you don't have chains you will need either tires or chains or both
i have chains, but i cannot be arsed to fuck around putting them on. ill just buy traction
Santiam and hood were bad first thing. I ended up driving down the coast and hitting up santiam
With our tires it was pretty chill in the focus
Sure beats getting out and chaining. We also could go much faster than 25
Snow accumulations Monday will range from 4 to
8 inches, mainly above 3000 feet in elevation. Snow
accumulations Tuesday through Wednesday on the order of 1 to 4
feet, heaviest above 3000 feet in elevation. Southwest to west
winds may gust as high as 55 mph at pass level, and as high as
75 mph for the higher ski resort elevations.
Incase you didn't see. Tomorrow the pass may become bad. Tuesday and Wednesday will be bad
I'm really liking our nokian's. Perhaps my favorite winter tire so far
have they got studs?
I'm personally not a fan of studs. They do have ones with studds/can be studded. If you are more on a budget the nordman line is their cheaper ones. The designs maybe a few years old but really still do excellent. The rubber is brand new the design is a few years old
Ok so traction != studded necessarily
Studds are really only good on ice. Packed snow just needs the rubber. The studds also reduce grip in dry and wet conditions
Just need to wait for Nokians very special retractable studs now
Is it better to go 97 through 26 to Portland or hit 20 and go through Salem?
Where are you starting at/ending
Bend to Portland
just thinking about road conditions, itl be in early feb
oh damn this site is useful
https://www.tripcheck.com/
The TripCheck website provides roadside camera images and detailed information about Oregon road traffic congestion, incidents, weather conditions, services and commercial vehicle restrictions and registration.
got road cams
Extremely
If you are going bend to Portland. 97-26 is easy. You can do santiam over 20 but I would then head down 126. Tombstone is no fun. If the passes are bad you can always do 97-127. That avoids most of the mountains but it is much more remote with much fewer cars. I'd just take hood
thats 97-26 right
Yes
id rather do that, more peepos
Mt hood/government camp
sick ok. Gotta be good views too. got my flares and shit im real ready
Gonna fire down the highway blasting them off like its the 4th of July
If you are still feeling nervous grab a set of tire chains to just have
i have them, practiced putting them on today too
not getting caught with my pants down
I'm going over in the blizard tomorrow and I feel pretty fine with just my tires. Chains will only come out if absolutely required
Quick chains are so nice and easy
yeah i just glad i got them. Ended up getting 4 instead of 2. Yeah igot those Super Z6 ones
Awd?
That black rubber band on the center that's the tightening point
I just take my finger and pull up next to the contact point to even out the pressure
decent thanks man!
Tank is good rite?
I would hope a tank with tracks that can ride over a truck will go over the pass
But yes it's good
haha ok sick. Cant believe my wife signed me up for this bloody trip.
she gets to stay home while i pick up HER mum and sister
Ha it will be an adventure
Bend Gang, do we need to shovel snow from the pavement if its still snowing?
In this weather too
Honestly we barely hit much snow falling. Visibility was fair to good. Could see 3 or so cars ahead
There were some semis having trouble with chains on even. Even a few needed pulled
But cars were ok
We were in our 2018 Ford focus
Just fwd
Didn't slip once. Traction control didn't kick in. No abs needed
sick.
We also have to drive back over tomorrow. Should be interesting
drive safe, been crazy today, but then again this is my first real snow in bender land
My tshirt was absolutely soaked from the drive. None of it was bad but it's still so damn nerve-wracking
cant wait.
I also like to follow a line of cars not lead. Makes it even easier
Have you ever driven on snow?
Yeah driven through a bilizzard with a few feet of visibility
yeah i dont want to lead
ill just pull over then let them pass and then follow
but then again in england they are really good at gritting the roads and clearing them
We just saw one plow the entire trip. It was here in Portland too
It's like 50 and raining
Hood can definitely be a bit of a spooky drive when weather is bad. GL have a safe drive.
Hood was even closed for a bit this morning due to disabled vehicles
I think I'm going to wait a bit and get some coffee and hit up powells before we leave
You make it back fine?
😟
Ha yeah. I passed out hard yesterday
Got my Blizzaks today which means i can drive at the speed limit now and take corners at 50mph

Actually these Tires are dope
Blizzaks?
Excellent choice
my grinder has shipped!
ohhh ok, didnt they close the roads to redmond and the airport?
ANother shout out if anyone is in portland on the 8th of Feb, only there for the day if someone wants to be a nerd and meet up
The grind adjustment looks fun
it moved pretty good honestly. not super easy that it will vibrate lose but easy enough i can turn with my fingers. i can also make a handle if needed
i only did one shot - 22 in - 35 out in 42 seconds. need to go a bit corser but tasted fine
now going from espresso to drip maybe where the handle comes into need
What grinder is that? Don't think I've seen one before
Turin SK40
ah neat
ive been quite impressed with it but then again its brand new
Oregon people!
In Eugene till 5am today any recs on a good shop to stop by? from out of state so dont know much about the area.
@proud bay @stuck cliff I'm in Bend, OR too! Just found this thread, I've been wondering if there's any other espresso nerds in town. Looked on Meetup and couldn't find anything so I'm happy to have found this thread. We should do a meetup sometime
Sweet! Yeah there have to be more ive met a bunch through friends and just in passing i tries to coral a bunch of us on r/Bend
I need to keep bumping this so one day we do something about it 😂
We really should! I'm down!
Just seeing this now. Maybe we try for a coffee meetup next week?
