When I choose "Group by Tags" for a folder it simply shows everything as "Untagged" even though the files all have Tags in their properties.
Now I tried adding Tags via Files itself but that appears to be buggy too as the only way I can actually make a folder list any Tags other than "Untagged" is "Group by None" then "Group by Tags" again & it breaks again if I leave the folder & go back into it again, showing once more nothing but "Untagged".
Really like Files but if the "Group by Tags" doenst work as well as the standard Windows Explorer Its not really useable for me. Does anybody know a way to fix this buggy behavior perhaps?

The tagging feature in Files doesn’t use the file properties, this is because those only work with a few file formats.
Yea I thought so & it isnt a dealbreaker for me seeing as Files has its own Tag system but if I could somehow get that to work properly that'd be awesome
There is a known issue with the group by feature not working correctly with tags. It’s on our todo list to fix and while I can’t link the bug report right now, you can try searching on GitHub to see if you can find it.
Did someone post a temporary fix for it there or a workaround or somethin?
Which layout are you using?
Medium sized icon grid I believe its called?
Speaking of there is another issue with Tags. Every time I click on a Tag it opens in List View & I cant find a way to set it to icon grid by default
am I missing the option to change that or is that a bug too?
You can change the default layout in settings
yea I did that but it doesnt seem to apply to the Tags
No fix yet but it’s on the todo list
still will just open Tags in List View
Toggle the setting to sync preferences across all folders
doesnt seem to fix it
works for everything but Tags
still just gives me List View when I click on a Tag
I can reproduce this as well
Please open a report on GitHub, should be simple enough to fix
umm never did that before. How do I do that?
would be sweet if it was an easy fix because if Tags can atleast be opend to Icon Grid by default then I can use that as a workaround for the buggy "Group by Tags" for now & would allow me to use this hella sweet file explorer as my main one
Agreed
The easiest is from the about page but you’ll need a GitHub account to be able to create the report.
I can’t promise an eta but I’ll try to look at this last issue over the next few weeks
only the tags open into list view thing then? the other one has already been posted yea?
Correct
ugh this is complicated lol
it wants a log file from me to upload
how do I get that?
cant seem to post the bug report otherwise
oh silly me, nvm I got it
thats okay, u are offering by far the best file explorer completly for free. thats insane!
Is there a way I can track the ticket on github to be notified when its fixed? Gonna have to torture myself another few weeks with the windows 11 explorer I guess 😄
On the same issue: https://discord.com/channels/725513575971684472/1198795882674532504
this would also replace the "Group by Tags" function pretty damn well.
It’ll notify you automatically when the issue is complete
But keep in mind that there is no eta
aight thank u kindly!
Which version of Files are you using? "Latest" can mean different things to different people 🙂
3.1.1.0 Downloaded from the Microsoft Store on 21/01/2024.
You'd be surprised, sometimes we ask the question and it turns out they are on an old version 😄
Or sometimes they are on a preview build which is newer
u commented an hour ago on github that the issue will be fixed in the next release. Is it safe to assume that next release is the new preview build from today?
aight, just wanted to know 😄
I have like a few hundred tags, is it safe to create them now or will they reset with the next release?
They shouldn't reset but you can take it slowlyfor a couple weeks just ot be safe
kk thanks!
Btw, this was a quick fix, it's not always this quick 😄
I only ever dabbled a bit in UE but I can imagine yea 😄
