This is very confusing on what your asking for. It sound like you want to make folders public available like an FTP server. Windows can do file sharing on network already with permission support.
You can also customise the folder in the properties with whatever icon you want and per folder background has been request here https://github.com/files-community/Files/issues/13653.
Program theming can be done by following the instructions at https://files.community/docs/configuring/custom-themes

Not at all combine a software idea like allTags which is a freeware that tags files and allow you to drop them in a single window so first off allow this so you can organise any file type into a window.
Then add the ability to change the picture for each item so it can have it's own artwork (cd cover/thumbnail etc)
Then allow to host it if you wish but not have to do so on your home LAN maybe a server can be made later to put it out over secure WAN (public internet access)
And last part allow customising those windows you organise items in to have a background and bezel maybe more visual modding
you'd make it a fork of the files regular software
so it's a tagging software (proper tagging multi tags for every file) a file manager that allows custom icons/tiles and it's theme-able
maybe export but backup definitely with restore needed
Files has a tagging system and you can use Windows to network share the files/folders. Files also has backup and restore for sharing tags in Files settings > Advanced
but not pretty it's minimalist what if you want more way more visual effects you want proper tagging not 4 tag options eg. a music file tagged to find by searching mp3/song/artist/genre etc etc files doesn't have that that I can see it's ultimately home/work/photos/important that doesn't find things in a detailed database manner it's just making 4 choices available to scurry through that coul;d still be thousands of files if that were a archive of substantial size it would not really impact it for searching out items would it
especially jumbled up ones in say download
Files settings > Tags. You can edit them and add as many as you want.
You click new tag or edit or delete
ehm no that says 4 different choice types not custom tagging
check out alltags dot net and install that take a good look at that and tell me that isn't amazing that that should be a lesson to all file managers organisation throw in custom art for every file and you have something really really special then trust me you have to check this out it's just wicked mate honestly it is phenomenal but abandonware.
where do tags appear as a list of tags only then?
What do you mean. You can see tags in Files setting > Tags then you can edit, delete or add new ones. Then you right click a file or folder to tag > Edit tag > Chose a tag to add to that folder or file. Then it can be found with the home page widget, Sidebar items or next to the item in the view layout
Yes I found that it's categorised in only 4 sections why bother at all just add right click and the file view includes a tag field is easier then put any written tag you like seperated with a space hit enter and it binds the tags that's how it would work better then every file is found by tags in the search box in files explorer sewrch bar instead of being restricted to that tags window, I can't see any way to actually edit individual home written tags for any files even in that tags sidebar window you need a video explination
To edit tags go to Files settings > Tags > Pick the tag you want to edit use the labled buttons.
I'm trying to help with ideas not connversate on a lack of individual tagging present
What's a summary of the request?
that's what I mean you've only got 4 choice for a category they don't need to have that
I'm a little lost, what's the idea?
you won't understand without looking at allTags you'll never understand
it's so much better and easier than files but if files had that vision to expand that to a more improved fork of files then you'd be making magic
I'll leave it there
Looking at the alltags site, Files already has the tags system you can export your tags for others to import and read them. If you want to share them between people you can use Windows built in network drive sharing. You can already search for one or multiple tags on a file/folder.
File versioning isn't something Files has. Not sure if it even something that would make sense for Files to add
Is the request to support syncing tags between apps?
I'll be back shortly made a screen recording just got to tinker with it
