I'm wondering if it's possible to partition an SSD so I can store my MacOS backups and record in ProRes Log on my iPhone

The SSD I have is a Crucial X9 1TB and the Mac I have is a MacBook Air M4 running Sequoia 15.5

Theoretically yes

Just it’s a bit tricky if you have other formats on that SSD

it'll be a fresh one

Ah ok, then you can probably format the entire thing as APFS and use that

will that allow me to record ProRes Log footage onto it?

If the drive is large enough, you should be able to record pro res log, to it.
If you open disk utility on your mac, and go to view > show all devices, you can select your external drive and press add volume group.
It’s like partitioning, but better as the different "groups" will share the space, so you don't have to set a specific size for each group like you would with partitioning.
However, I don't know how you can set your phone to record to a specific volume group (in the files app, they should appear as separate devices when the drive is conneted), so you might have to move the files each time to keep things organized between your backups and your recordings.
