So a couple days ago I had a discussion about how Intel Macs kinda suck and that’s why my computer is so laggy. But I cannot get a new computer right now so is there anything I can do to lessen the lag and also how loud the fan is. It’s just making me very frustrated. This is how loud it is while charging on google chrome. And of course right when I started the video the fan became way quieter lol
#How to improve lag on a intel 2020 computer
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Unfortunately there’s not a whole lot you can do about that
That’s just the Intel curse
I know exactly what you mean, I had an Intel 2020 Pro and I’m lucky enough I managed to get the hell away from it via an M3 MacBook Air
Getting the 2020 MBP must suck since you could’ve spent similarly and gotten a machine that’s better in every single imaginable way
The simplest solution is to downgrade macOS
But that also erases all your data
that’s an Air (no Touch Bar) but yeah, it’s rough
Yeah
I feel so bad for anyone who bought a 2020 Intel Mac
I know that pain, I had one
It’s not fun
Without getting a new computer, the tried-and-true solution is to downgrade to an older macOS like Ventura or Monterey, but support for those have essentially run out.
The best solution is to get something with an M1 or later (preferably M3 or M4 for longevity), make sure you get a 16GB RAM or higher model though.
Extra question: If you had money to spend on a new computer now, how much would you spend:
you might also be able to install Windows 10 on that Intel Mac as an alternative without shoving older, potentially unsupported macOS on it, but even that's not ideal, especially with Windows 10 going end of support in 6 months.
The time to get a new computer is asap.
I have a 2020 MacBook Pro sitting somewhere running macOS Catalina, and even with that ancient macOS version it still struggles to be quiet, have good battery, and be very fast. That thing almost never gets used tbh even when I first acquired it a few years ago.
Windows will make it worse
Windows 10 is running out of support, and windows 11 will be so laggy you can’t even use it
I would recommend downgrading to Ventura
It’s still supported and will be slightly better than sequoia
Honestly yeah, unless you want to get a new computer, just go back to Ventura.
Ventura or Monterey
Sonoma’s too similar to sequoia
And Big Sur or older is too old, no more support at all
Even Google Chrome is dropping support for Big Sur soon, and when browsers start to drop support, it's game over.
Yeah
Big Sur at this point is obsolete
It’s like using iOS 15 rn
I guess iOS 14 technically
Esp people who bought an Intel Mac Pro
yeah, the Intel Mac Pro hits hard, it was expensive but pretty powerful, but then M1 Pro, M1 Max, and eventually M1 Ultra came around and it immediately devalued the 2019 Intel Mac Pros.
yeah, Big Sur came around the same time as iOS 14 so yeah, that version of macOS is practically obsolete for most things
An Intel Mac Pro would be pretty good for installing Linux on and/or using it for heavy stuff like compiling or AI
Yea I got a new one chs my orginal 2019 broke in a year for no reason
So I’m very frustrated
What’s big slur?
macOS 11 from 2020
I bet
Do I have that or no since I updated
I wouldn't wish an intel Mac on my worst enemy
Do you think it’s worth upgrading now instead of waiting for college
I’m a junior in high school
I would have to convince my parents idk if they would
anything will be a huge improvement over that
Is it really that bad
Also is my wifi keep disconnecting a MacBook issue or wifi issue
I upgraded from an intel 2020 Pro to an M3 MacBook Air and never looked back
this is better in every way
Apple is getting on my nerves cus wdym my orginal Mac broke for no reason within a year and then my new one is worse
could be the Intel Mac curse
the Apple silicon Macs have so much better build quality
my intel MacBook Pro warped
Intel Macs are not good. Try using an M3 or M4 MacBook Air for 10 minutes and you'll immediately want to toss your Intel out and get the newer Apple silicon Macs, they're that much better
yes, warped
warped? must've gotten really hot
the sheer heat that thing produced bent the body, even with how thick it was
this was literally me the day I upgraded
sadly I don’t have MacBook money 😭so unless my parents buy me a new one before college I’m stuck
Right now I prefer using my fourty dollar school Chromebook
But I cant dowload non school browser stuff on that
How much money can you spend for a new computer right now? even an M1 MacBook Air from 5 years ago will be infinitely better.
here are the geekbench scores before and after
this is going from a Pro to an Air, mind you
and it's still that much better
even an M1 will be better
I mean I have like 500-700 dollars but I don’t want to spend money on a MacBook if my parents are willing to buy me one when I go to college
and that's from 5 years ago!
while also having like three times the battery life on a physically inferior battery
it's insane
well you can save another $100 on top of your $700 and get an M3 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. and even then you could probably find that for $700.
can personally recommend that laptop
typing on it now
that laptop provided those GB scores
Intel MacBook 2020: just as hot as those old PressHot chips from 2004.
(if you don't know what I mean, Intel's Pentium 4 Prescott chips had a reputation for getting hot)
you know Intel MacBooks are rough when you prefer using your school issued Chromebook, yikes
My first MacBook was a 2019 air the one with the class action lawsuit. Within a year it randomly just stopped charging and two weeks later my sisters keyboard just dropped working
Yea… and it’s legit a forty dollar computer compared to a 800 dollar one. Mine just lhs so much while opening new tabs and typing
believe me your frustrations will basically vanish once you get the chance to pick up an M-series MacBook
they did for me
At this point I hope my computer just dies so my parents will get me a new one before college 😭
Yeah, the Intel MacBooks were literally avoidable, when even $600 laptops from the time were better than MacBooks at the time.
As you can see we’re gonna shame you until you give in /s
Listen I got my intel when I was like 12 or 13 my parents where deciding which one to get
The Intel Macs are basically nearly e-waste at this point. Poorly designed for hot and inefficient processors
And my dad is a software engineer 😀
I’m just joking lol
Dw I know lol
I got there by just asking for birthday money and doing work and things to get what I needed to pay for a MacBook Air
I could ask one for my bday but I’m getting a new phone for my bday so it’s either new phone or new computer
and if you only have $700 to spend, you're very close to getting an M3 MacBook Air.
What’s your current phone?
whatever gets you there, because believe me every penny spent on an upgrade from intel to apple silicon is 100% worth it
11
I regret nothing
New computer 100%, if your phone works okay, then yeah keep the 11 for now and upgrade your phone next year.
Ugh it’s hard
Honestly recommend new Mac over new phone, but it’s your birthday it’s your choice 🙂
Whoa why does discord make the : ) into an emoji
Omg yes it’s so annoying
just like idk open a video editing app on it
that'll probably do it in
Run a nature simulation
U got to hear it while playing rovkox on the lowest graphic. I have no shame in my roblox games lol
The iPhone 11 is not a bad phone but it's showing its age and may not even get iOS 19 if Apple decides to pull an iOS 16, but at the same time I understand your frustration with your MacBook and you should upgrade your MacBook asap, and focus on getting a new phone next year.
Rumor is they r ending supporting in 2026
Screw rumors tbh
I listen to lord cook
Anyway, back on topic
I would recommend installing Linux on your old Mac to give it new life
Trust me it’s amazingly smooth on older hardware
Like Ubuntu or Mint
honestly
if you're up for it yeah linux isn't a bad idea
just make a time machine backup and dual boot it until you get something better lol
I switched to Linux on an old laptop I have and it gave it a whole new life
I tried it out for 5 minutes, I knew I no longer needed Billy gates in my life
I’m never using windows again
hornlong has been typing for 2 minutes
Blink twice If you need help
These are rumours, the iPhone 11 was released in 2019 and is currently the second oldest generation of iPhone supported by iOS 18 (the XS/XR from 2018 being the oldest). Assuming Apple does what they did with iOS 16, it might not get iOS 19, so you should look at upgrading your phone soon.
But at the same time, I really understand your frustration with the Intel 2020 MacBook. Those frustrations will vanish as soon as you get an Apple silicon computer, so anything released in November 2020 onwards. You could get the new computer now and save up to get a new phone next year. But if you need to make your old Intel MacBook more usable, here are a couple options:
- Install Linux
- Downgrade to macOS Ventura (may not be feasible long-term as Ventura will be unsupported soon)
yeah, my memory on Intel Macs from 2016-2020 is very rough
I'd rather splurge and get the new computer, even if it means having to stick with the iPhone 11 for another year or two and risk having to use an older iOS version (iOS 18 or 19 depending on when they drop the 11)
Yea my mom has the one with the Touch Bar has that one it’s laggy but way better
Honestly next time my computer makes me want to punch it for example whole opening google chrome or typing I’m going to just bring it to me dad and just show him
No joke we have been trying to fix our wifi for years since me and my sister cannot use our computers in our rooms without major lag but what if it was just the computers all along 😀
Kinda just realized that
I don’t mean this in a mean way but what’s he gonna do lol
You’re running 2024 software on a machine that Apple is trying to kill off
Convince him to get me a new computer earlier 💀
Honestly, I'd be more worried about getting a whole new computer at this point. If you want a new phone, you could just stick to the 11 for another year.
If you want to use that MacBook any longer, downgrade it to macOS Ventura.
Otherwise get a new M3 MacBook Air 16GB immediately
Didn’t u say that deletes my data tho
What do you use the computer for?
Well I don’t use it a ton just to play video games once and a while or attempt to do school work
yes, so you have to back files up to iCloud or an external drive first before performing a macOS downgrade.
“Immediately” like it’s a life and death situation lol
Meant to reply
What do you use to do schoolwork?
"video games" well if Chrome is making it perform bad, I don't want to imagine playing games
What apps/software do you use for schoolwork (for example, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, etc)
even using Safari is a big task, at this point just downgrade to Ventura and switch to Firefox
I also use google chrome as my main browser
yeah, that can run on anything that runs a modern web browser. Google Chrome and Firefox still support macOS Ventura, so I'd downgrade to that older macOS version and switch to Firefox.
until you can buy a new MacBook with Apple silicon, this is the best I can recommend without switching to Linux
Still better than Sonoma and above
Still never gonna be as good as getting a whole new MacBook.
But Linux will bring new life to any old machine, even MacBooks
provided you can get it running on a 2020 Intel MacBook
which shouldn't be too hard
just make sure you pick the right Linux OS
Like honestly, some people think Linux is an os that you have to constantly use terminals to do simple tasks, but distros like Ubuntu are meant to be beginner friendly and intuitive - you can use it just like you use windows or macOS.
You only have to use the terminal when you wanna do advanced stuff.
here's a wild stat for you
True, normally I'd recommend that most people stick to macOS or Windows, but Linux is your best bet for machines like the 2020 MacBook Air.
And it won't get as hot as those old Intel MacBook Airs and Pentium 4's. PressHot.
MBP with pentium 🤮🤢
Nvidia’s charts but if they were real:
For reference, the Intel MacBooks were known for getting hot, just like those Pentium 4's. PressHot ended up being the nickname for Intel's Prescott CPUs because of how hot they were.
hence this abomination of an image I made recently
Oh my god…
yup, even an M1 will be a massive upgrade, and it's actually true
Is the new MacBook Air good? Cus personally I don’t think the price of the pro is worth it…
The new MacBook Air is absolutely worth it
without a doubt
I still miss my rose gold mac the best color Mac
starlight is similar
Is that an option for the new one?
They always make the Mac colors boring since the 2019 air
yup.
starlight, midnight, silver, sky blue (m4)
Ooo
Looks similar to my gold iPhone 7, but looks nice!
wait til you see iPhone colors
Those r usually more fun
I got the yellow iPhone 11
Don’t really like the iPhone 17 colors tho
iPhone Pro colours are always boring, but the iPhone 15 had very muted colours (don't buy the 15 btw), the iPhone 16 has actually good colours.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16e: black and white
iPhone 17? these are rumors, apple will announce the real colours when they announce the 17.
at this point the colour doesn't matter as much, the experience is actually what matters.
Ok anyways
If you ever decide to shop for a new Mac, when you get the opportunity, you can open a post in #1053488658424008784 and people there would be happy to help
As in “people there” I mean the same people that operate tech support lol
True ture
Any more questions? Or have you come to a decision about what to do with the Mac
No more questions yet. Funny thing is my sister texted me today also complaining about her Mac and asking how to make it faster. I get to break the bad news to her lol
yeah, if she has intel, tell her to get a new computer
(literally)
She has the same one as me we r twins so we get that stuff at the same time
And her last mac broke within two weeks of mine breaking 💀
yeah, you can improve it slightly if you downgrade to macOS Ventura but it's still not gonna be great, intel macs are unreliable as hell
you could also install Linux if you're up for it, although I'd recommend getting something with M1 or later (preferably M3 or M4, especially if you're planning on keeping it for over 2-3 years). Just remember to get a model with 16GB of memory
How much would I get if I traded it in
Yea… I just don’t know if it’s worth all the effort u know
I’m going to talk to my dad about it
You’ve said that like 20 times lol (the buy new Mac thing not the Linux thing)
Sadly not much, but it’ll make a difference
What country ru in?
Actually nevermind
But it’ll tell you at checkout
My dad is insisting it is slow cus this suggested thing is using high cpu and he wants to delete it but I don’t feel comfortable with that. What does this suggested thing even do
What suggested thing?
This
Like I don’t think this is abnormal
But my dad is insisting it is. Even tho other applications like google chrome have been running for thag long. It’s just because I resented my computer that amount of time ago
If you 8gb of RAM. You're kinda screwed at this point. The best you can do is reduce tabs you open or close apps you don't need.
So is the suggested thing not affecting it?
I don’t have more then four tabs at once
