Hello guys,

I'm trying to find a good MacBook to use for development. I want to keep this device for a long time, preferably 5-7 years. I need it to be supported with at least the second-to-latest macOS at any given time for Xcode to work.

I was looking at the MacBook Pro M4 (24GB, 512GB) for $1699, and that's what I'm probably going to go with. However, I was also thinking of getting the Air with the same specs for $1299. (By the way, I plan to use external drives if I exceed 512GB)

Specific types of development:

  • Node.js development
  • Lots of app development (which needs Xcode and Android command line tools to compile with)
  • Emulators/virtual machines (specifically 1 Linux x64 VM, a couple Android emulators and an iOS simulators)

I don't use Docker or stuff like that, but I anticipate I might within a few years.

Any suggestions? I'm going to buy it sooner rather than later, as my current computer is actively dying, so I'm not gonna wait for the M5.

If you want to run a few iOS devices simulators simultaneously go with the pro 💀

I've found trying to use Xcode + Simulator (Any simulator besides the macOS one) is never a good idea on lower end laptops. Get the MacBook Pro.
