Either keep the external drive plugged in, or plug it in at least daily and let it do its daily backups. Like most backup systems, Time Machine is designed for multi-generation backups — hourly, daily, etc. The hourlies are done to the same drive (they’re designed to allow you to recover a file you accidentally deleted or modified earlier in the day, while the single full backup and periodic incremental backups allow recovery of the system to the state it was in at any time since the full backup.

if you don’t do this, you will find available disk space shrinking, as the incrementals get held waiting for you to plug the external drive in.
