The 17 isn't likely to be all that much of an upgrade, in my opinion, so when I went through this decision in September, I went with the 16 Pro Max, and hedged my bet by buying it on the Apple Upgrade Program.

I'm a fan of the camera control too -- it's enabled me to get pics that I wouldn't have been able to get before, because you can essentially point and shoot with a couple of clicks of the button like with a real camera.

The people who have issues with it generally have never held a real camera, and don't understand that you have to hold it with two hands, thumbs on the bottom, fingers on top, and when you do, the camera control is right under your index finger.

On Apple Intelligence, I really like it - use it all the time. I'm not a fan of cloud AI services like ChatGPT, so while it's nice that there's an extension to ChatGPT so it can optionally use it for more complex things, I anxiously await the day when the hardware is powerful enough to never have to use the extension.
In 18.2, I'm finding that it's asking to use it less and less even now, so that's awesome.
