So I have been having this issue for months and I can't seem to find a solution or a single other person who has experienced this. No matter what, every single time I connect my iPad to an external display, the display seems to be running at half the framerate of the iPad. The picture is very stutter and there is massive input delay. This happens with EVERY non apple app, every game, any app that's not a built in app. I just want to use my iPad like a console on the TV but it's unusable with how laggy this is. I've tried several USB C adaptors including the official apple one, I've even tried direct USB C Thunderbolt without an adaptor. I've tried over 5 different monitors and TV's. There is something wrong with how the iPad M1 sends it's output to the TV and I can't figure out how to fix this

I'm not sure what would cause that outside of what you've done. You've been pretty thorough in your troubleshooting.
If I were in your shoes, I'd try next steps:
- Verify you're on the latest version of iPadOS (and are not in a dev or beta version)
- Verify your iPad is not using Low Power Mode
- Restoring the iPad from backup to see if it makes any difference
- Contacting Apple to see if there's anything else to try
In addition to what Amy said, I'd thought I'd share a theory I have. It's possible that iPadOS is purposefully dropping frames to provide better performance for the game. Again though, that's just a theory.
@split pumice
If it only happens in games and not in any other applications. That theory would make sense. Also, not sure if this would help, but in iPadOS 18, there is a dedicated game mode to help improve the performance of games and latency with bluetooth devices. So you could try updating (if not already) and see if it makes a difference
Which iPad model do you have? There's a couple/few that have an M1 processor
yeah i'm running 18.0
Air 5
Ah. Well then that hasn’t helped then.
yeah i'm confused. seems like no one online has ever reported the same issue
I wonder if it's a odd software glitch or hardware issue
I would try to test it out, but I don't personally own a iPad to try it.
Have you tried connecting the iPad to another TV ?
Several TVs and monitors
which m1 ipad?
Air 5th gen
are you mirroring, or do you have stage manager on, with the external display having its own content screens?
No stage manager, no mirroring. Just the usb c to hdmi adaptor
That’s probably your problem. You need to use stage manager. Make sure you’re following the instructions at the bottom of this page. https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/connect-to-a-display-with-a-cable-ipadf1276cde/18.0/ipados/18.0
With the appropriate cable or adapter, connect your iPad to a display, like a TV, projector, or computer monitor.
What difference does stage manager make? All that does is let you run apps in windowed mode
Oh, it does more than that. It changes how the display handling works, including making the external display a separate set of stage manager windows. I remember when they added the external display stuff to the Air 5, it was shown as a Stage Manager thing, and it only worked on mine when it was active.
It’s like the difference between mirrored and extended modes on a laptop or desktop with multiple monitors
Yeah but I want mirrored. I don’t want extended
Why. If the ipad is 60hz then the tv should be 60 hurts
Has to do with the handling in the display chips.
It won’t display with stage manager on. It just says “not charging” and doesn’t do anything
And it’s an HDMI or USB-C native display?
It’s my tv yes
So now I got it to connect with stage manager on. No difference in refresh rate. Still laggy. The only difference is the lag is now in windowed mode
And it’s still mirroring, not extending even with stage manager on
There’s a choice that comes up when you plug it in… damn, I don’t remember the exact sequence, but you have to choose the stage manager icon somewhere in the sequence.
No choice. I plug in, and it mirrors to tv. That’s it
Look in control center
and if you turn off and turn it back on?
Nothing happens. It just turns it off and back on
It’s not detecting something from the TV it needs. I had this problem with one of my monitors that used a DVI connector. The HDMI->DVI cable I was using didn’t carry some signal it needs
The problem at hand is that you’re not getting the device to recognize the external as a display that it can set up the second stage for.
now you should be able to put the app you want to run over on that display, tap/click the horizontal three dots and choose “Enter full screen”
But how can you full screen an app
My tv isn’t touch screen so it’s not like I can tap the 3 dots
do you have a mouse / magic keyboard / game controller?
‘cause that would be the next thing.
How would you do it with controller?
the iPad recognizes game controllers, and I think you can move the cursor over to it…
Controllers don’t have a cursor though?
I know you can use it obviously in the games, cause I’ve done that. But I’ve never tried doing multiple displays without my magic keyboard or mouse.
I’ve never owned a keyboard or mouse. I never saw the point if it’s a touch screen
There’s no way to tell the controller which screen to control it seems
You could turn on assistive touch in Accessibility settings, then turn on mouse keys and use your onscreen keyboard to move the mouse pointer to the second screen
Wow that is incredibly unintuitive
M series iPads are so much more than just a touch screen device
To me an iPad is just a jumbo iPod touch. Like it’s always been
Well, it’s how you do things when you don’t have a mouse or keyboard.
Well, if you want to not use 50% of its capabilities, you could look at it that way. I’d encourage you to broaden your mind - it’s a pretty powerful computer that happens to have a touchscreen.
and pen capabilities. I was doing all my work and stuff anytime I was out of the house on my iPad Air 5
I just want JIT. I bought the iPad exclusively for 1 game initially and i just use it as a gaming device and my cell phone since all phones are too small
Oh god why is the mouse cursor a white ball? Where’s the arrow pointer?
I’d suggest at least getting a cheap wireless mouse if you don’t want to use the Accessibiltiy route.
Hm. never thought about that. I guess it’s representative of a finger touch. I dunno. I’m used to it now.
I guess they don’t want to draw enough dots or something. That’s weird. That’s a question for that app dev. I guess. I
Seems all apps are doing it
Chrome and YouTube also cannot be fullscreened when clicking full screen
But at least so far I’m not seeing lag in the game
Can you position the mouse over one of the corners and try to drag the window to expand it?
Yeah that I can do but it’s not “full” full screen as it still has borders doing that
Will it fullscreen on the iPad screen in stage manager ?
The iPad screen yes, but not the external screen
If you set it to full screen on the iPad using the three dots and the tap them again and send to the external what happens
It sends it to the external as a tiny window
I suspect that the app can only work with certain resolutions and you’d have to manually set the external to that limited resolution
What app is this?
Call of duty warzone
Retroarch also does it
And so does Safari, chrome and YouTube
What resolution is the external display?
4k 3840x2160
You could try setting the external display to a lower resolution and frame rate to see if it lags
But how do you change the resolution of the external display in the iPad settings? My TV just displays at whatever signal the iPad sends to it but iOS doesn't seem to have anywhere to change the resolution used
Ehhhh I have no idea
Maybe there’s a way on the tv somehow
