How to decrease battery usage for no cell coverage?

if it is a physical sim, just remove it, what is a point to keep a suspended sim in a phone if it has no more purpose

It’s an esim and I have the option to turn it off. However, if I turn it off then I won’t be able to use the number with iMessage and it would be a hassle to have my contacts switch and then switch back a few weeks later.
