#Application Memory

Application memory is referring to RAM
You can check Activity Monitor to see how much RAM your apps and system are using
@vivid ocean
alright ill check it out thanks
Yep
does this have to take up 183GB though? it seems like a lot
So system data varies a lot. It’s not something you can easily clear.
If you go to system settings, then click general then click storage. You can see how much system data is using.
System data is the grey area
system data is taking up only about 12gb
Oh ok, that’s normal
what kind of things are in "documents"?
Documents can be files that you have in the Finder
So if you download a lot of files and things like that, that number is going to be big
So if you wanna clear some of your files out, you can look through the Finder
As for your RAM, how much do you have?
where can I see that?
Go to the Apple in the top left-hand corner then click about this Mac
Your RAM should be listed there
Oh so you got 8GB of RAM
If you’re seeing that your system is running out of application memory means that you’re exceeding the 8GB of ram that you have
Yeah, it's not just the amount of apps. Some apps may use more memory than others.
For instance Photoshop on my Mac sometimes use 3GB while Safari may use 700MB. The amount of memory will not be the same and it will vary as your using the app. As it depends what your doing on it
ah alright
Usually it's recommended to get 16GB of RAM if your going to be using a lot of heavy apps.
or just a lot of apps at once
are you able to add on ram?
Nope
ah
Due to everything being all on one chip, that isn't possible
The M2 chip has it's RAM (Unified Memory), CPU, GPU, and it's Neural Engine all on one chip
ah so it isnt physical ram which you can take out or add in
Nope
i see
Apple calls it unified memory. The benefit of it being on one chip is that it's faster
But there isn't upgradeability
yeah that makes sense
how tough is it to get by as a student with 8gb ram? do you think ill be facing this problem quite frequently?
It depends on each person's use case. What apps do you tend to use?
i always have chrome, safari, spotify, and discord open
i ocassionaly use final cut for schoolwork
but thats usually about it
Ah I see. When do you usually see the "Your System Is Out Of Application Memory" warning?
Does it happen when using Final Cut Pro?
no, it hasnt happened with fcp yet
Interesting
im not sure when exactly it happens, i just have a lot of applications open at once and i get the popup
I see
and sometimes it stays even after closing my applications, which is why i kinda wanted to look into it
Hmm, what macOS version are you running?
where can i see that?
i restarted my mac yesterday so i think its the most current one
Restarting doesn't update your Mac
Go to system settings, then general, then software update
i think this wasnt up to date when i first opened this thread
when i was getting the popups
I see, the newest version is macOS 14.4
oh
Is this what you saw today?
For the update?
alright
Sometimes memory leaks are issues in older OS versions
ah i see
This will help narrow down the issue
so the software being outdated could cause this problem
I've had a memory leak one time on a older version of Monterey
Possibly, but not for sure
If it the issue continues, it could just be you don't have enough RAM for your use case
Great
Updating apps is also good to do
im guessing in that case ill just have to get a new mac?
ah alright ill check that out too
Yeah.
alright
But you'll have to definitely upgrade the RAM
to at least 16GB
That's what I have and it runs great
are you able to turn in an old mac and pay less for a new one like the iPhones?
Yes!
oh nice nice
i might do that if this continues then
yep
Apple's webpage shows you can get as much as 550, but to find your exact trade in value you'll go through their prompts on their webpage
this is what i got
Ohh that's solid
That's when you put in your serial number and listed the condition?
yep
mhm
Which Mac would you get if you were to get a new one?
im honestly not really sure
Ah ok
i was told an air was enough for school
so i might just get an air again and upgrade the ram?
Yeah, you could do that
i cant trade it in for an m3 right?
It's not that the Air isn't powerful enough, it's just you don't have enough RAM
You should be able to
oh really?
Yeah
oh wait nevermind its there yep
There is a 15 inch and 13 inch size
possibly, yeah
I see that your using a lot of the 256GB storage
Ok 👍🏼
im not really sure whats taking up so much storage though
is there a way to filter the things on my computer based on how large it is?
Yes
yeah it does seem to use a lot
I clear render files after a project
yeah i should probably do that too
oh wait i see
these things are taking up all my storage
i thought it was my own videos that were taking up the storage
i kinda assumed it was since it took me to these presets when i clicked on this
ive deleted all of my videos but its still at 63gb
Alright, I'm gonna tell you how to delete render files
Click File, then click on Generated Library files
There should be a checkbox for Render files
Alrighty, no click delete render files, then all
okok
Then check your storage again
oh woah
It helped?
a single event took out 40gb
Yay!
I do this all of the time
Woah!
yeah this is really nice i didnt know i could do this
but doing this removes the videos completely right?
This removes render files, not videos. But those files take a lot as you can see
so if i were editing a video and decided to do what i just did
would that video that i was editing still be there?
Yep, your Mac will just have to rerender it when you open the project again
I usually do this after I'm done with a video
but when it rerenders, it takes up the storage again
Yes
ah alright
okok
so i should just do this once im done with a project and i should be good to go
okay nice
No problem! Glad I was able to help
You can mark the post as resolved. If you ever need help with purchasing a Mac (if you need to), you can make a post in #1053488658424008784
Yes
Yep!
actually it probably belongs in in #1053488658424008784
i was going to ask which iphone i should get since i have an android right now but want to switch over
Ah gotcha, yep. I'd make a post in there
yep!
Great
Just got this again while updating my software
That’s ironic
Then apps memory usage doesn’t even seem extreme.
Yeah
what do you think could be a possible reason why this is happening?
Application Memory
System is running out of RAM somewhere along the lines
Did your Mac update yet?
yeah it has updated already
i mean i did get that while it was still on the old version so
it could have just been that
Alrighty, let’s see how it goes on macOS 14.4. Let me know if it happens again
