Which is better: backing up to iCloud or Directly to mac?

I am puzzled as to which is the best and most preferred way to back up my devices. Is it better to back up to iCloud or a Mac and what is the difference?

I personally backup my iPhone to my MacBook once every month instead of iCloud for the following reasons;

1. my home internet's upload is so slow
2. don't have to pay for iCloud storage
3. arguably more private than cloud storage

But either one works, it just depends on what you want. And how fast your internet is

I still don't understand. I get that backups are different based on iCloud or computer but I don't know which which is better to back up.
