"5G is the fifth generation of wireless cellular technology, offering higher upload and download speeds, more consistent connections, and improved capacity than previous networks." -Google
It means that 5G is independent network without use of LTE (because most 5G connection still operate with LTE support), it will should improve you "normal" 5G speed.
It doesn't necessarily improve data speeds. It's for improving call quality.
5G standalone or as it's commonly called VoNR (Voice over New Radio) enables you to make calls over 5G where previously it would just use LTE for calls. When you make a call your phone will stay in 5G and won't switch to LTE.
It's basically the 5G equivalent of VoLTE (Voice over LTE).
And it highly improves call quality as well.
