Got this message from a student's parent of mine:

Thank you.

Can you recommend any books that are particularly good for a beginner to develop their skills in Game Maker.
We have found GameMaker CookBook. Any idea if this would be good for [name of student]?

Having a look, GMCB seems to be from 2015 so it's probs for gms1
unfortunately.. it's the first result when you search "gamemaker book" and same with similar results it seems

anyone got any better suggestions?

Stuff like Shaun Spalding's tutorials btw I don't think work for a kid (without direction) due to their length even if they are passionate
Stuff like thenewboston's java tutorials are more what I'm looking for, if possible..

#

obviously books are preferred but video series works too

I haven’t known anyone to make any books as of late so I couldn’t say

fossil sparrow
#

Fair
Video series for kiddos will do then

little pike
#

Maybe we should make an up to date book 🤔

daring drum
#

oooo?

#

can stuff like that be unofficial?

little pike
#

People have done it

#

And even sold it

#

So yes

#

It’s a learning resource

#

Even HeartBeast (previously known for making GameMaker tutorials, now Godot user) had a book series

#

But this is for GMS 1.4

little pike
#

I mean he did leave GameMaker for Godot so I’d say yeah haha

daring drum
#

wait..

#

so is the name gamemaker cookbook already taken

#

that's so sad cause it fits this server so much

little pike
#

It’s a book

#

Books are different

#

Besides, we use it for the jam name

daring drum
#

if gmkitchen had a book

#

it had to be a cookbook

little pike
#

Hehe well, if it were to be from gm kitchen

#

I’d rather cater it more towards advance topics imo

daring drum
#

yes

#

imagine an open source book

#

it's like the uh

#

the juju repo

#

painful lessons

little pike
#

Painful lessons, but topics that include

#

CLI

#

Build scripts

#

Proper management of your project assets /j (I’m spit balling lol)

#

hard to imagine a gamemaker book for kids. how old are we talking?

fossil sparrow
#

but he's new to computers so it's a double learning thing
(most(?) kids around that age are ipad onlys these days)

next wigeon
#

increasingly uphill battle

daring drum
#

this saddens me

#

computers are so cool

fossil sparrow
#

it's went pretty well actually, they get the concept of mouse movement + clickndrag easier than elderly ppl (who i also teach) as it's similar to phones

keyboard shortcuts are easy to teach too

set em up with monkeytype for a little bit and theyre mostly ok to start learning gms2 as long as theyre willing to put their hand up and ask questions sometimes

#

it also helps that i teach it more as a "how to make creative ideas / make cool stuff" class
rather than a coding class

secretly they learn code anyway and want to learn how to do it more later

I don't think it'd work at all if I taught it as a coding class

fossil sparrow
# daring drum computers are so cool

They were
Less now
trying to teach computers to new people is really hard due to the amount of popups that appear on screens nowadays
"install this! new update here! sign into skype!"
and search function not working properly, and the amount of ads, makes it rlly difficult for the elderly to learn

#

too many extra windows to close
or extra stuff to read
gets rlly overwhelming

little pike
#

Monkey type aye?

fossil sparrow
#

even signing into google for the first time is confusing, one of my students started asking about guest mode which i had never heard of before
but if u try sign into google now there's a little line about that

#

haha yeah i do monkeytype for a bit then i switch to one that's actually focussed on teaching typing (after a few classes*)

#

but monkeytype is a good one to get em interested

little pike
#

nods nods that’s intriguing

fossil sparrow
#

always good to take the opportunity to show off typing skills too lol

little pike
#

Technology just keeps on advancing too quick for us old folks

#

I was thinking about something in relation to typing, need to poke someone

OKAY FINE

#

TAB CONVINCED ME

little pike
#

Hehehe

fading fossil
#

Not exactly a book but for context I had an idea last year

#

It even kinda works

little pike
#

In case you’re on mobile (like me)

#

(May stolen a screenshot from somewhere)

fossil sparrow
#

Interesting
(i gtg but will look more later)

You can probably see roughly where I was going with this

Was this book mentioned?

Game Development with GameMaker Studio 2: Make Your Own Games with GameMaker Language Paperback – Sept. 3 2019 - by Sebastiano M. Cossu (Author)

A bit dated, but a fairly decent starting point at a low level.
