I'm almost at the end of completing my first project in GameMaker and would like to upload it to itch.io for people to download for free.
Maybe I'm worrying or even flattering myself too much, but since I have created all the game assets myself (art, sounds, music) I'm wondering if there's anything I should do to make sure these are protected - or are they automatically protected upon publishing?
I've tried reading about this, looking at creative commons licences etc. and it just puts my head in a spin. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!
(btw I'm here because my game uses Scribble and this server was where I was getting help with that before the new one was made 😅 )
#Uploading a game to Itch - legal stuff

are you in the united states
sorry, should have said. I'm in the UK
pretty much the same thing legally: the minute you make a thing you own the intellectual property rights to it
all your art, music, and code that you've written yourself is yours fullstop
Thanks! Ok, perfect. So just to double check, I don't need to include any written declaration of copyright or anything like that in these places:
- on the download/info page for the game
- in the game itself (e.g. title screen or credits)
- in a text file packaged with the game
This is where I see other games state licence stuff so I was wondering.
youre not distributing your source code so you do not need to re-license it
you should put "Copyright 2024 <your real name here>" on the game somewhere and on the store page though
and it wont hurt to put a "uses X Y Z library" on the splash/title either
in some cases it may even be required by your libraries like if yer using FMOD or something
Literally everything I've used is:
GameMaker
Aseprite for pixel art
Famitracker for sound/music
Scribble
A font I downloaded whose licence simply states "Freeware" (https://www.fontspace.com/press-start-font-f5841)
I've included all of these things in the credits at the end of the game, but that's it (currently - I've got nothing when the game turns on or on the title screen)
beautiful
many thanks for the help!
gotta add though, like i am not a lawyer and this wasnt legal advice and if you want REAL legal advice hire yerself some legal solicitation/lawyer helps. but for something like this u r generally good 2 go
