Don't do that, try to kill only dudes standing by the car. If possible kill 2 dudes standing somewhere between velum and car. But, be carefull, sparrow missiles can curve along their path and can hit a little forward or backward or around your target. If you can hit properly shoot missiles, try to avoid firing missiles that would end up close to velum. Rest, land chopper at some distance kill remaining NPCs on foot.

There is another little thing that I did once. My velum started smoking the moment I took of. I was somewhere near right side of map, so I lowered plane altitude and drove it on the highway, all the way till I could drive it on road, and then I sort took off easily flew close to ground, by the time velum's engine was about to die I was at Cayo. This might work I only really did that once.
