Honestly the old system that they had was fine where you had to send an actual request and the other person had to accept it. This new system is ass backwards and more a kin to something like YouTube and subscribe and or follow features

However there is a workaround to keep people from joining that are constantly following you. If you go to that users profile and block them and their account from responding to you it also makes it so that they can’t follow you as a friend
