Adding to an infinite source of income definitely helps but it isn't strictly necessary. I never max any of my businesses out because I'd be losing money then. What I do is wait until one is about to max out and sell that. By never hitting the limit, I make sure that I make the most that I can. No upgrades or anything - just the three underground businesses I wanted. Profit every time seeing as the only expense is optional.

KDJ and Sessanta? If you want to deal with all that, I believe it's pretty decent (from what I hear). The salvage yard tow truck missions do guarantee profit as long as you're willing to do them. I haven't blown myself up because the hospital takes the expenses but do them and you profit. I always take a few seconds to pull out an mk2 just in case the police get called. Leave or hover over the area, lose them and it's guaranteed profit.

Mind you, it's work not everyone enjoys.
