it allows you to create crew-only lobbies / invite crew members, have a custom crew emblem that can be put on cars and clothing, and achieving crew rank (levels up at a similar rate to your rp) by being in a crew when you complete rp-increasing jobs gets you crew bonuses.

it's basically an extension of friends but in a much more collective and general sense

also a lot of even solo players make their own crews since each crew can have a custom colour assigned to it, so they'll use it to paint cars custom colours (even though it is a pain to use since if you want to use different colours you have to quit gtao, create new colour in crew page in r* social club website, then go back into game).
