ohh, i see. thank you.
circe has romance... but it's not romantic? idk how to put it but romance is not really mentioned, and the whole book is mythological fiction
i don't like romance either but circe has it mentioned simply for a few pages, and it's not explicit nor is it a main point of her story
there's radio silence by alice oseman! female mc and no romance
it's also based around friendships
thank you so much!

If you're someone who wants to stop procrastinating i would recommend you to read "The war of art" by Stephen Pressfield. It's a life changer type of book
read "the art of war" by sun tzu to study battle philosophy and strategy frfr

The first Dune book is on top for fiction, no comparison.
maybe the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy has a chance but that first dune book was special

Anyone can review they atomic habits plsss
Im really struggled to get into this book
what do y need help w/
I dont realy know how to take down the information into my note
:'))))
It is quite hard to read a book in english
so I wanna find some summary first
Read all of it tho, like the whole thing is good and gives good pointers
Read it in your language or try to read it in English to improve
What did you like about that book? Itās just a normal dude ngl
I read it but havenāt done the practices that often š
It's crazy for me that book about such average life can be so good
If you are not used to reading books in English, it's going to be hard.
Maybe just read one or 2 pages a day and try to understand by searching up the meanings and keeping a vocabulary book (I had those growing up qnd it's super helpful)
Summary you can find anywhere...but everyone looks at the book a little differently.
As it is self help book, there is a lot of information like you said. But in summary the information will be lost.
This advice is also good!
I have a friend who is reading it in her language cause the information is easy to understand in a languageyou are comfortable with.
Good luck!
Have u tried to use any stragegies in that book? Does it work?
Atomic habits: do things regularly to achieve your goal but you have to be consistent. I forgot the rest, taking book notes is such a pain
I think it could work, while reading it seemed very easy to implement but honestly it's been a few years. But I want to re read it...so I will try to do it this time.
i think atomic habits is an unnecessary book
"do stuff everyday, and after enough days, you'll be better at it!" thanks
i like james clear but i feel like the book could have been summed up in, like, a paragraph or two
i didn't need to read all that
same deal with art of war, which i'm pretty sure was written for aristocratic donothings, 'appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak'
inspiring
100% agreed
I think there's more to the book than that. I really appreciated the chapters where he broke down concepts like Self Control and setting your environment for success.
Agreed, the environment chapter is very important
And I appreciated a lot the examples he gave through out the book
But all of these concepts can easily be discussed in a 1-2hr podcast
But people donāt do it. Thatās the point, that they know it but donāt use it.
If u really want smth you'll do it without reading the book and if you don't you can read thousands of those books and you won't do shit I've seen it in myself and my friends
Thousands of self help books? I agree
Itās a steep hole
But for other books I disagree
I think the atomic habits is the main one ppl read to seem productive but not really change their lives. Even I took some things from that book, but not a whole lot
Things I use even today*
i guess to me it feels redundant because most of what he's saying feels mind numbingly obvious. but that's just me ofc, if other people find value in it that's great. personally i found it almost condescending
Yeah there are some nice points in the book but I feel like they can be condensed to 10 pages
Again many may find it very helpful this is just what I think

The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham
-The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason
-Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki
The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John C. Bogle
-Personal Finance by Rachel Siegel and Carol Yacht
Vision to Reality: Stop Working, Start Living by Curtis L. Jenkins
Kiyosaki spotted hahah, all great books tho! I should reread them and keep better notes this time, theyāve got a fair bit in them
what are some books you would recommend
The molecule of more, has anyone ever read it?
Havenāt, but that Lego figure sure is good at convincingā¦. Now Iām curious hahah, Iāll give it a look and read up since itās recommended here ;)
thats cool, we can read it together and discuess about it. im at bage 90
I would take you up on the offer, but Iāve got final exams coming soon, then another set of exams after the holidays which need a fair bit of prep work, and I gotta sort out some personal stuff that are impacting my performance and psychology too much, Iāll let you know if I end up being able to later, though donāt expect anything, thanks tho, appreciate the offer <3
my final exams are close also, and i have also another stuff to do. for now, im reading like 10 to 20 bages everyday, so it doesnt take much time. anyways try to take an idea about the book and if u like it, u can stert reading it later.
Thanks, best of luck with your exams <3

I disagree, I think it was a pretty book break down of how to improve at things. There were quite a few counterintuitive algorithms in there that went beyond basic advice. I'm more a fan of the 1st half than the second though

Hello,
I had trouble reading books after corona
Last month, I read a book called "everything everything" and I decided to write "property of : _(My Name)" after I finish reading a book
(You'll get the reference if you read the book lol)
This month, I'm going to read
Non-fiction : thinking, fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman
Fiction Harappa - curse of the blood river, by Vineet Bajpai, from the trilogy.
Wish me Luck! š¤
I am done reading "atomic habits", and with it the third book recommended by james.
It is the most comprehensive, and an easy read. I recommend starting by reading this one, then "cant hurt me", and finally the worst read "Deep work", which was painfully long to finish, awfully repetitive
might be a hot take but when it comes to reading self-improvement books, i find it better to read parts of the book that interest you and then just leave it. I think the core value of most self-improvement books can be appreciated in a couple of chapters.
unless its a biography or something
is this the psychology of flow?
I think so too, it's like a open menu, take all you want or need but not everything
That would be "deep work" yes
100% agree
I'm into novels right now, I odered omasu dazai and kafka books, I'm waiting for it hehehe it would probably be here next week
the first book that come up my mind is Anxious People
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49127718-anxious-people
contrary to the title, the story is warm and humorous,
genuine question, why would you waste time reading something that is "painfully long to finish, awfully repetitive"?
i hardly dnf books, but if im reading something that truly makes me hate reading, ill sell it asap
Because i hate leaving books unfinished
And there is value in the book, if i stopped reading it i wouldnt have known about the advice clear gives
š¤ yes deep work is awful lmao
fair enough
i see. just thought it would become pretty boring, since it was so repetitive, thought you'd already know what the author meant
"Atomic habits" is better in that it just straight up what lessons you can take away from the book in one page
"Deep work" doesnt do that i think, you have to read the book (or flip the pages until you find smth interesting) to know what newport is talking about
<@&942391219206647828> spammy scammy
But after learning all these so called productive books I have come to know that, off American books are better. Especially old books and new neuroscience related stuffs.
Can anyone suggest me books of pure knowledge without propaganda on the subject of " Business and Posture related " mainly academic. So that we could compare our knowledge so far.
That could contain " Negotiation topic too." Or "critical thinking "
Right
hey guys, i needed a small help, i have my uni work, in which i have to submit 10 books photos (front , back and the spine of the book) - photos of these . needs to be a hardcopy of the book
and then its study and thesis. so can yall send me front back cover and spine of the books yall have which has unique typography in my dm, i really need to submit it till tonight
Dont needa waste Time in finding books instead make your own books
I hate thesis ngl
Hi guys, i'm currently in my self development era, and wanted to find any good books with the same theme, do you have any recommendations? Thanks!
The book of joy
maybe "why we sleep" by matthew walker? sleep is veeeery important for personal growth
48 Laws of power (š)
Ikigai by Francesc Miralles and HĆ©ctor GarcĆa. I really liked learning about how Japanese people lived up to be 100 by their way of life. It also has great advices about career picking and self-improvement in my opinion.
Atomic habits by james clear
Excuse me, I want to ask, if anybody knows some books about electronics for beginners(not that typical ones, just something you guys read and experienced that was easy to understand). Even better if the book talked about how to start, had chronological list on what to do first, what to learn first and such.
Declutter Your Mind by Scott and Barrie teaches practical habits, actions, and mindsets to clean up mental clutter that holds you back from living a meaningful life.
this book provides actionable advices as well
HELLO
Is sharing of epub files of recommended books allowed here?
If so, can anyone share epub of self help books they recommend?
I don't think it is unfortunately
Well people can share the titles of their recommended books and you can find the books yourself (epub version) it's kind of easy lol
Feeling Good - David Burns
He talks about depression and cognitive behaviour therapy.
Especially usefull if you are a bit depressed or well just not feeling well or overly critical of yourself etc
HI
try libgen, zlibrary and anna's archive. you didn't hear it from me.
HELLO
ā
I recently read the lot of 49 over the summer
Iāve been picking up Atomic habits by James clear too
Iām not sure if your still looking but Atomic Habits is good so far
if you donāt want to find the full book, parts of the chapters are on his online blog with some of the lessons he gives
digital minimalism by cal newport is much better and relatable than deep work.
I will definitely try and grab myself a copy then, thx for the reco
yea i found deep work less relatable, coz we dont live in that email era anymore, we have more distractions social media and stuff . also i felt that book is more relatable to guys working in corporates, havent read till the end btw, just my observation tho
<@&942391219206647828>
Yesss. I felt that I was wasting a lot of my time trying to finish it. I don't understand why people like it so much!
Actually bruh, Deep Work is not a fun read, valuable and I don't regret reading it AT ALL, but shit it feels like he's just beating around the bush sometimes.
Hey...
You are the key.
If I remember correctly, there is a character in The Karamzhov Brothers by Dostoyevsky with your username.
I have to say atomic habits is very good imo, and really gets at the nature of human behavior. Though parts of it i disagree on somewhat, especially near the end, I think its very educational.
INTP IM INTP TOO
Has anyone read sapiens by noah hirari its rlly good
I skimmed my note of that book. it seems so interesting(I forgot about the details lol) I gave it "life-changing" in 2023.
a renowned historian said sth like the author just explained what historians have been explaining and sometimes the author failed to write correct stuff.(I read or heard somewhere.)
Oh ididnt know that
I've seen a lot of critics of that book that says that some stuffs in it aren't 100% accurate
Hello, anyone have any recommendations for East Asian literature. Countries like Korea, China and especially Japan is preferred. Classics are preferred as I don't really enjoy contemporary books that much. Anything depressing like Dazai and Akutagawa please.
the dallergut dream department store
(korean novel)
Oh, thank you. Do you happen to know what sub-genre it would fall under?
Oh, would you consider it depressing? Is it particularly sad?
no no it's not depressing
it's theraputic lol
i know some jp novels that are good but probably they are not translated into english yet
Oh, I see. Thank you though.
Oh, I guess that's nice.
ive heard its not good if you r quite religious, maybe related to atheism ig. whats your opinion

Natsume SÅseki's kokoro is pretty melancholic kind of a slow burn tho
Oh, do you think it might be similar to the works of Dazai or Akutagawa?
I just had a look at the blurb on GoodReads and I find it very interesting. I'll definitely read it. Thank you for the recommendation.
Well I haven't read any akutagawa or dazai but its a really quiet one, this one. And i believe you gotta know your japanese culture to really appreciate the work and understand why the characters act the way they do.
Ah, I see. I'm not very knowledgable on Japanese culture. I'll make sure to look into context before reading it.
borrowed funny books š¤£š¤£š¤£
I started to read little life
Convenience Store by the Sea. Light read, therapeutic, made me think about the smallest things of the now ngl
Need nonfiction recs about brain, thoughts or dopamine
Human Acts by Han Kang. Not sure if itās the type of depressing youāre looking for, but itās based on the Gwangju Uprising. The book has very unfiltered descriptions of death, grief, and the aftermath of the violent massacre. It's written from different povs, (I remember the first? chapter being from the pov of a soul that can't move on).
Oh _myāgod \
Ah, I see. I'l definitely give them a try.
Sounds just right. Thank you so much.
It is depressing in a lot of ways though. Lots about finding yourself
Thatās actually so interesting
Molecule of more maybe? Not read it yet but it seems good
Almost all of Cal Newports works are good if thatās what you are looking for.
Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke is good too. I really enjoyed The Molecule of More by Daniel Z. Lieberman

Helloo, can somebody recommend some good books on marxism to me? I need them for one of my uni courses.
the wealth of nations by adam smith
Black Marxism by Cederic Robinson
Anyone here up for discussing If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies by Eliezer Yudkowsky? I just finished it.
How was it? I have it in my Reading List (Want to Read).
The bell jar, just finished it
has anyone read permanent record by Edward Snowden, I'm currently reading it and would like to discuss it.
The read itself was quite good, but I find the general idea not very realistic, but I get a lot of people have very different opinions on AGI
I have it on my reading list, how is it?
I'm reading it rn, read the first two parts and am on the third one currently. I mean I guess depends on why you're reading it, as a testimony it's good, but as a memoir in a literary way I hate it lol. I'm reading it for my english course but I feel the professor gave it to us more for vocab than anything else. I'll let you know my thoughts once I finish it completely, but the first part and the first half of second part were terrible imo.
i've read it finally. Second half is definitely waaayyy better than the first half of the book. But the first half was torturous to get through, the last pages were his wives diary inserts and i liked that part way more than any of his self important ramblings š so yeah 2/5 for me
Hii anyone interested in reading some book till the end of January and discussing it together?
Also maybe some recommendations?
a necessary project hail mary read to be ready for the movie coming out in march
I'll look into it! Thank you!
what kind of books are you interested in?
W recommendation
I started Wuthering heights recently
Also highly recommend The Count of Monte Cristo if you haven't read it yet although it's pretty huge lol
that book will take till the end of 2026 to complete, not january š
i started that one yesterday! im also reading Martyr and Six of Crows
ohhh i wanted to read six of crows i remembered rn
honestly rather light reading, I wanna get to know the history of literature and important books that shaped the reality, but also i wanna a book that feels like a reading reels
i recently overread my comfort books and I cant read them no more,, I am kinda in a situation where I can't find anything stimulating to read
I really like fantasy, kinda basic answer but thats like my comfort genre
Ooh nice I'll look into the ones you are reading rn
Lmao but jokes aside I finished the last 500 pages of that book in one day lol
omg reading this while listening to the OST of its movie adaptation is a holy experience ⨠āØ
*the 2024 one
It's on my TBR! but it's so long i never seem to get around to reading it lolš (i will though, one dayš¤)
Has anyone read The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern?
I missed out on that experience cuz I didn't even know the movie existed š
When I finished the book and searched it up on yt only then I found out about the movie
Trust me just start it and you'll be hooked right from the start
There's no "`Wait till it gets good" Period with that book
ohh I'll def try to get to it soon then!
definitely the most exiting classic I've read
This and "les MisƩrables"
I'm married to that book
read Dune
Ohh it's on my TBR
Just went to a book fair and bought some books
Moby Dick
Homer - Odyssey
The Great Gatsby
The Kite Runner
1984
Outsider (Albert Camus)
@vocal zenith whats the diff btw this channel and #book-recommendations
exactly what the name says
There was an active book club
so we recommend books there and here we talk about the books
like book discussions?
Kinda
Basically a discussion channel or if you wanna ask about some books etc. And that one is if you wanna recommend smth
Has anyone read tim berner lee's https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/222376492-this-is-for-everyone
Damnn they are all great books, great picks š
I'm curious about Moby Dick since it's so widely disliked
Haha thanks, Ik these all are pretty popular books but I recently got into book reading so they are all first timers for me
Ohh really I didn't know guess I'll just have to find out after giving it a read
I did pick up The Poppy War there but then I found out that there was quite alot of controversy surrounding it so I didn't purchase it in the end
Yeahhh :) drop a review here when u do haha, I saw various mentions of it in youtube reviews, where people seemed to not like it much. But that makes me even more intrigued to find out what's going on in it š
Oh yeah! I've only read yellowface by R.F. Kuang. But I've been curious about here other books too.
The kite runner is also on my tbr but it's so sad that I can't seem to find a good time to read itš
Ahh I see although I've to say I'm terrible at reviewing books š but I'll try
Yeah I've heard about that one too how was it
Yeah everyone says it's so good and so sad, I was kind of avoiding reading it but I've finally gathered some courage lol
It was definitely a fun read! I couldn't stop reading it haha
Since the reader is in the main character's pov and the mc makes the most questionable decisions, it's pretty interesting to see it all go downhill lolš
i read babel for school and enjoyed it
theres definitely a lot of mixed reviews, but i think its a very interesting concept that probably couldve been executed better
ohh so I've heard. Babel is on my TBR but I have been procrastinating on reading it XD
exactly hahahh I bought 3 books from the same author but have not read any of those lolš
same with The Book Thief, I was so thrilled to buy it, now I'm scared to read it
I recently got the audiobook of The HitchHiker's guide to galaxy on audible. Has anyone read it?
Oh nah these type of books infuriate me š
Ah yes I wanted to buy Thousand splendid suns as well, but again scared to read lol
You gotta get through em man atleast once š
lmaooo ikr, it feels like i keep waiting for the right time to read it, but if I'm in a good mood, I dont feel like ruining it and if I'm already in a bad mood i don't wanna ruin it furtherš
i get what u mean š This one was like watching a car crash but still bein curious about what happened next lol
Lol sounds like me with "The Kite Runner"
I started reading The Great Gatsby today hoping to finish it quickly
Well that's definitely smth, maybe I'll give it a go as well
On many places I've seen it being regarded as her best book so won't hurt to read Ig
oh I have a copy of it too! i should read it soon too
almost every book I have talked about is on my tbr lol
yeah i think u will enjoy it! Ig its less heavier than her other works too
Have u read The Picture of Dorian Gray?
I even keep picking up and putting down "Crime and Punishment " for the same reasons although I feel like it would be my jam, I don't wanna be in a bad mood rn XD
Seems like you have got a lot on your TBR pile š
Ahh I see
Nope not yet tbh I'm pretty new to reading haha I haven't read much, only classics I've read so far are The Count of Monte Cristo and Wuthering Heights hehe
Ohhh I have it as well but same I'm not sure if I'm ready for such a heavy read
I doooš I've been so busy with studies that it's just piling up
ohh then you should! I think you'll like it haha
what did you think of Wuthering Heights?
The Count of Monte Cristo is def equivalent to 5-6 books tho haha
same, I'll prolly read it after I'm done with my exams and will have some space for something heave then :'))
Oooh in uni?
Very interesting to say the least, at first I wasn't so sure about it but flew through it later
Not sure if I love it as much as The count of Monte Cristo but I'll still recommend it
When I bought it I thought it was a romance book lol but it's definitely not just that
Also one thing I realised in this was that there wasn't anyone to really "root" for lol
Yeah good luck with that not sure when I'm picking that up
not exactly, I'm preparing for another exams called Chartered Accountancy here in India. It's more of an independent study degree :)
oh yeaaa I heard this too XD I am sure they've ruined the movie adaptation tho
I also liked white nights by dostoevsky. It's quite short too
Ohhh makes sense why you have the independent study role
But um I'm also in India lol my friend is prepping for CA too
Yeah they prolly made Heathcliff a hero lol
damn
I feel like everyone has read white nights except me
Yeah I got all those books from New Delhi Book fair lol
lmaoooo, I went there tooo XD
Hahaha
I went there on the first day it was so crowded lol especially the Penguin stall
It's nice, u can try it!
Yeah probably will once I finish the ones I just got
ohhhš I went there in 2024
have not even finished those yet
I've gone there every year since 2023 lol
the sunday book market is nice too
yeah I'm not really a Delhiite, so I was there at the time so made best use out of it XD
Yeah definitely but alot of books there are focused on competitive exams which is a turn-off for me haha
oh yeahh, but there are tons of fiction books as well, I got so many there
That's great yeah, I'm not from Delhi either but I live rather close by for uni
Ahhh cool!
True true
bro i am planning to go the sunday book market
I am waiting my boards and kcet to finish
I have a list of books like
Ikigai
Meditations and more
I guess I'm going to buy good night punpun
<@&942391219206647828>
Ur doing too much
Sorry
Same bruhhh
i wanna read that too
ive heard its pretty depressing
Oh is it a really good book? I haven't heard of this before
its a manga ,
if you are into comics you should go for it
Don't go for it , it's depressing
Exactly .I questioned my choice
I have read depressing stuff before. A Child Called It for example.. that book was very depressing, hope the author has total happiness these days.
As long as it's good I wouldn't mind reading it
But ya I read manga and manhwa, and a tiny bit of manhua
you should go for it oyasumi punpun is def worth it
top tier book. didn't expect a description of a battle

In my damned country, most of the books I want to read aren't available, and even if I find them, they're very expensive. That's why I'm looking for websites to download PDF books.
which country?
Algeria
has anyone read hp lovecraft series, heard about it, thinking about giving it a go
Just the short story The Alchemist. Also read some Manga versions of HP Lovecraft. They were pretty great
Hey gyss is this channel specific for any kind of book? I was looking for educational books on mathh
I've read a fair amount of his short stories and there's some great dramatized audiobooks if you can your hands on them. Most of his works are read in one sitting, not a big investment to dip your feet into.
Did you receive help with this? Holler if not and I'll send you a dm
What philosphy are you interested in? For general reading I'd say Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, good read and you can likely find a book club that's reading it if that's of interest to you. Otherwise I'd highly recommend Fictions by Jorge-Luis Borges, Veronica decides to die by Paulo Coelho and Don Quixote by Cervantes.
Throw an egg at those who that recommend Ayn Rand.
Its a great read, Woolf rarely misses. I will wholeheartedly recommend Juan Rulfo's works. "El llano en llamas" is a collection of short stories and "Pedro PƔramo" a short novel. From the other side of the globe you have "Doctor Glas" by Hjalmar Sƶderberg, another shortie.
hey there, we're from the same country, there's actually plenty of books available in online stores (even if your desired ones aren't you can simply ask them to get you that) unlike libraries around and even with affordable prices.
Dantes Inferno, but it can be hard to read
love me some murakami
south of the border west of the sun
i am going with letters to a young poet and tuesday with morrie rn since its starting for me oh also getting meditation by Marcus Aurelius
Haha thatās totally fair, I havenāt read the ones youāve started, but I hope theyāre good š

Guys just finished Anxious people by Fredrik Backman and I totally reccomend u people. The story was comforting with so many twists. He finished the quote: Grass is greener on the other side" by saying growing grass takes a lot of manure so the greener grass has a lot of shit too and that was oddly comforting.
you should try Man Called Ove next. its the best he's ever written imo
Will do
COOL

Has anyone read the book " a plan that actually works"
Andrew Huberman, Ph.D. Official YouTube Channel

*Note: The information on this channel is provided independently of Dr. Huberman's teaching and ...
does anyone else listen to this? there's an episode on motivation & drive
I'd recommend it as a background podcast while you do other tasks? sometimes he says "reduce symptoms of autism" or similar and i cringe a little bit because those studies usually don't treat the autistic participants well, "symptoms" is very vague, and vocabulary is ehh (autistic ppl usually prefer "traits") but other than that, no criticisms
"symptoms" could range from stimming/self regulatory behaviours (that can be self harm sometimes) to digestive symptoms, as well as headaches, meltdowns, shutdowns. it's like saying "high functioning". high functioning what? it's more like a mixing console
*i meant that they often use young children and ABA therapy methods :/
Got it, thanks
If you're into philosophy, maybe try the "Philosophize This" podcast @celest cobalt
I like it as a background thing too
Yessss

AHHH!!! I missed it! T.T
Hello, could anyone suggest me the best books about healthy eating?
Im a massive fan of worldbuilding in stories, and greatly enjoy reading fantasy that branches away from the norm when it comes to it. With that being said, is there any fantasy (science fiction is okay too) book with amazing worldbuilding, any of you would recommend? Thank you in Advance!
The Malazan Book of the Fallen Series by Steven Erikson, The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, The Corean Chronicles by L. E. Modesitt
Has anyone read** Frankenstein**? Did you like it or do you recommend it?
i'd read it back in school. maybe an unpopular opinion but it was decent. ig if you wanna read some nice fiction and chill, it's a good read. fairly small too iirc
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
Haven't read it yet but I've heard good things about it
Thank you. Thats quite a lot of stories, I will take a thorough look at them all. I am currently listening to the audio book of Mistborn, and I am loving it, so there is no doubt that I will be having a look at The Stormlight Archives.
This appears to be EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you so very much for the recommendation š
I tried to list them in order of impressive world building
Thank you for such a very thorough answer. Do you have a favourite amongst the lot of them? And is there a reason that one in particular speaks to you? š
The world building in Malazan is crazy good, but story wise my favorite is probably stormlight archives so far. Corean Chronicles are extremely good, and the way the story is developed and told is a real treat, and there are some insane reveals near the end. It's only 3 books, whereas the first 3 series are all around 10 books
actually there are 7 books in the corean chronicles if you want to read some books the author wrote about what took place in the past
but they aren't really necessary
The author of Malazan is actually a real life historian, so it makes sense his world building is so good.
thank you so much š
It sounds to me like every single book you listed feats the bill of what im looking for perfectly! My only problem now is the limited speed at which I can read the books š I think I will start with Malazan the moment Im done reading what Im currently reading. but if Corean Chronicles are as good as you say, they will also have to be read!
Ah I should warn you that malazan can get brutal at times (a lot of the time?), and the books are very long (most are 600+ pages). Also the first book is not as good as the following books. But it's still one of the top epic fantasy series for sure, and actual Gods do roam the lands, and creatures/people can become deities.
Exiting! I take it the gods aren't omnipotent per say then? Otherwise that would be cause for quite a lot of trouble and chaos. (Unless of course that is exactly what the book is about?) š
There are large pantheons, that cover different aspects. There are also different positions in the different aspects, like ruler, knight, champion, etc, and they all possess at least some degree of godly powers.
champion is generally a mortal imbued with godly power. Some champions are crazy strong though. And people can get killed off and others can take up the position
There are old gods as well
And some other types of gods that would be a spoiler to talk about
Also ancient, extremely powerful races
that can fight against these gods
there is deep history in this world, very deep and powerful
Is the main protagonist a commoner or someone who has already "gained" something in this world?
Or would that be too spoiler to talk about?
There isn't exactly a main protagonist. There are groups of them, and you follow some guys that are almost antagonists occassionally.
The protagonist from the first book gains an interesting ancient power, something about being ||the master of a |deck of dragons|| .. he shows up sometimes but isn't the focus of the series
its not really a spoiler cause he has to figure out what that even entails as well, spoilered it anyways
You have sold me. I will write my thoughts on the book when I have finished it (although it sounds like that will take a little while). Thank you again for the recommendation š
Np. I was really fascinated with these when I first found them! It will keep you occupied for awhile.
Unrelated but this picture of Troye Sivan makes me think of Dorian Gray! I truly believe this is what he would look like
Ref: The Picture of Dorian Gray (which we have been reading this month)
wow definitely, now when I read it I can only think of Troye š
You see it too! Yay xD I think of his face everytime dorian says something xD
really enjoyed The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and now reading the second book in the trilogy
Mind giving a brief sumary of what it is about? Im always ready to add another book to my plan to read Collection.

Yhooooo has anyone read the school of greatness?????
hi guys
Hey@deep wraith
I wanted to buy my first book, should I buy the original version or the translated one?
yes, u should buy it
@rugged prairie I mean it really doesn'T matter. But buying the original version will also improve your english
I think it depends on the book, there are some that in the translation lose the sense of what the author means, or at least a part. There are others due to the subject, the translation is the same as the original and you don't lose anything. If you can read it in the original language fluently and it isn't a problem, the original is probably better, but if it costs you, try the translation
Hey do you discuss the book after you read the book?
Is there any schedule to read?
@muted pollen sure! it follows the story of a journalist and a crazy smart but socially inept researcher who work together in order to uncover the disappearance of a figure from a prominent Swedish family. In doing so, they also uncover corruption regarding a major corporation owner in Sweden
So i am thinking of getting one of those e-readers. Does anyone care to give a recommendation? (I am not familiar at all.)
With that title I was convinced it would be fantasy. This sounds really interesting! Is the book one you would recommend? Where does one start with the trilogy?
Or is "The girl with the dragon tattoo" the first book?
I have an amazon kindle and it's been pretty neat so far
Hi Guys
So the kindle is just an ipad but only for books? (Sorry if I am way off. I have never seen one in my lifeš )

Oh thanks š , both of you. Gonna look into those then.
Yeahh and you can email pdfs to the kindle and life becomes so much easier (add subject convert to the mail)
Is it possible to mark things there or even to take notes?
Okay thanks! I'll take a closer look at it.

Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. In short, deep work is like a...
I listened to it in audio version some time ago, I'm posting this if anyone else wants to listen to it :)
thank you
started reading atomic habits
I just finished it today! Great read, I made some notes on it
hello! do you happen to have Jimmy's other recommended book, Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins, in google podcasts? š
I do :)
is there a specific way to read atomic habits?
Imo, go through and read it front to back once, get those little color tabs for when the lesson applys to your life, if it does put a tab, give it a second read probably only reading the chapters that have tabs, and then take notes on those chapters and compare it to how you currently approach life vs the optimal
But really it's a book, aslong as you dont blank out you should get something from it regardless
thank you so much! š„°
I had no idea this was a channel on here but this is really cool guys! looking forward to read some books with y'all
his podcast is great too
i got to understand different situations of applying deep work because people would ask real life scenarios

Is it Flow: The psychology of Optimal Experience?
Just finished Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky and first time reading Dostoevsky btw. To be honest it was very lengthy, long novel to read but it was worth while were it was a wild and poignant journey with each chapter and part which contains (6 parts) making it a classical Russian literary piece of work. MUST READ book especially if you are into psychology and crime and delve into his novels because its worth reading.
Hello everyone ! I just finished another chapter of the book im writing so, if anyone is interested in giving me feedbacks, it would be nice
(The book is written in french/ Le livre est Ʃcrit en FranƧais)
this link leads to the last chapter i wrote
i just started reading that one
From start to finish just š Everything about is the reason why itās such a classic
damn i have really high expectations now
it went lightning fast for me, I was just so intrigued by the damn story I completed in like 4 - 5 days
Full of symbolism too. For instance, Sonia was written by Dostoevsky as an allegory of christianity. Dostoevsky was a man who struggled his whole life with his faith, and various metaphysical issues, but in his novels he always seems to come to the conclusion that christianity (russian orthodox in his case) is the answer to those problems. However, this stance wasn't so clear cut in his mind.
(well 4 - 5 days isn't lightning fast, but it's my first book! so!)
perhaps read The Idiot...you might change your mind...
How so?
According to my interpretations, the idiot was created by Doesteovsky to detail a pure Christian who follows pure Christian values, but his decisions based on the pure values does not always yield him the best result and perhaps causes an immense turmoil for him and for the people who're closely associated with him...
Well as I understand, Myshkin is deeply good (in a christian sense), and Dostoevsky tries very hard to paint him as a Christ like figure. It seems to me that in the Idiot, the problem is the others, who aren't as "good" as Myshkin. In other words, Myshkin is the victim of other, less christian human beings.
I thought about that too and I would say that's actually a better way to think about it, I read the idiot with retrospect to Crime and Punishment, myself and the society around me, in Crime and Punishment we are introduced to the deeply rational and deeply atheistic personal, Raskolnikov, whereas in the Idiot I saw a deeply Christian and deeply religious Myshkin, after reading the two I thought to myself that, there must be a line drawn between My Spirituality, My Rationalism and the society around me. I think I read those book with a deep individualistic perception as if I can't control the society, maybe that warped my view on those books, hehe.
Has anyone here read Confederacy of Dunces?
idk, but i'd read the six of crows duology first
Hello everyone!
I didnt know this channel existed._.
I started readingg "getting things done"(but i havent read the other two books James recommended)
Any tip š
on reading getting things done?
can anyone tell me is the book "one of us is lying" worth reading?
Just completed Heart of Darkness in a single sitting. This might just be one of the best novellas I've read. I cannot do this book justice with mere mortal words. This is an experience. An experience that transcends your state of mind to another dimension. It exposes a side of you that you probably never knew existed. Please give it a read. It's a hard read and most readers might want to take it slow. The novella itself is pretty slow but when it ups its pace, you see Conrad's vision behind this work of art. Although it isn't possible to understand the symbolism and transitions in the state of mind of the protagonist at first glance, a couple of videos on YT that analyze the novella should help you out in that regard. And to anyone who hasn't, I'd suggest watching Apocalypse Now and playing Spec Ops The Line before reading this book.
I enjoyed them a lot, they were fun easy reads
do you guys prefere a e-book?
yes
I recommend
Can't Hurt Me
by David Goggins
The best part of buying books from the book depository aren't the books you get, but realising that they've all come in little separate packages and getting wine vouchers in each one, change my mind

Yeah its a great purchase you can store many books on it an d it wont take any shelf space
also i download pdfs from the web and read the books,
ayee thanks for this
might just go and buy one
which specific varient of kindle should i buy though any clue??
i think I have the basic model, that i also ig 4-5yrs old
amazon keeps sending out updates so there isnt any issue with that too
higher models have features which, according to me, are not required, if you are only gonna use your kindle as an e reader..

What is this book about?
its like: she has never been healthy and was always behind everybody else, and he never noticed her then
but when she becomes a grisha and gets the power of that animal (i dont know the name in english), he asks her to give that power away
thats low key fucked up
I have read all three, and I have to say that the same thing happened to me, but the books have improved as the books progress
I hope so. I am pretty anxious to read the rest
It's a real + dramatical story of Christopher McCandless, a graduate boy who left his home and headed towards Wild in search of Life and it's truth.
It also got adapted by a Movie. "Into The Wild"
(it should be noted that mccandless dies in the wilderness (not a spoiler))
I've watched that movie
Its a masterpiece
Consider reading the book ' of mice and man'
Its a short and sweet novel.
not moreso sweet than jarring
had to read it for lit back in year 12

i do know basic french grammar and vocab
This is the full routine I used for 30 days to become fluent in French after years without success. And the following video shows a time lapse of my progression during those 30 days : https://youtu.be/CVQ4lXf-I5I . I still use the speaking exercise from this routine everyday to maintain my level. What I learned in creating the exercises I used i...
I don't know how this book club works but i'm currently reading Ego is the enemy and Mindset
anyone read the Sherlock Holmes before ?
it's really good, keep in mind that he doesn't only explore murders, but multiple types of crimes (burglary, kidnapping etc.), i personally thought sherlock only investigates murders
I have just recently finish watching sherlock holmes on nexflix
now im thinking about reading the book
Has anyone read 12 rules for life by Jordan peterson?
My sister reads it, she says so far it's enjoyable, she's past half of it, but also says that there's a lot of unnecessary fluff and pandering
i think that BBC series is based on those books but doesnt follow the exact storylines
Anyone who read macbeth shakespeare
I did, good read
The netflix series is pretty good and short. I am currently reading the book and it is something around 800 pages each of 2 books which is pretty pretty lengthy.

I've started Dune and it is going sooo welll
read less, there is no need to read a chapter a day, get rid of over ambitious goals, just read in some spare time.. if its of some importance to you, you will read a bit more.. maybe you are here because the book you are currently reading is a bit boring, maybe you just have something "more important" occupying you right now or you are simply feeling lazy.etc, just aim for like 3-5 pages in your day, I swear thats like 20 minutes in your 24 hours, eventually your interest will pick up, give it time
I just finished "On Writing" by Stephen King(highest selling author, like ever) and he had his own writing block lol, after a very "brink of death" accident, he picked up writing again with alot of diffuculty.. but he did it nonetheless, because he knew his flame would spark eventually
Did you read the other books of Stephen king? I want to start reading of his books but I just donāt know which one to start do you have a favorite or recommendations for his books?
nope i haven't
but here is one that may be a good start, this is from the book I was reading. maybe its his best work
Okay thanks
Or you can try the green mile shorter book and very good inspiring story
Hi, I started with Carrie since its one of his early works and also a shorter read. For me it was a good starting point, Pet Sematary, The Stand and It are also high on my tbr. Hope this helps.
Okay thanks, now I started to read pet sematary. I will also look for the stand,It and Carrie too .
oh, I hope you enjoy pet sematary as much as I did, it has some scene written so well that I was actually a bit scared.
Yeah Iām actually very nervous about it lol I hope itās not too scarring.
Heya~ I'm new here (Discord in general so still figuring how this works) currently reading "Maps of Meaning" by Dr. Peterson and the "Anthropocene Reviewed" by John Green š
Do anyone want to read book with me named limitless ??
**that book is about learn how to learn **
<@&717391911132069929> carl is sleeping ^^
Sounds very promising š I'd be happy to š
Do you mean this one? https://www.amazon.com/Limitless-Upgrade-Anything-Faster-Exceptional/dp/B086WPC14V/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=limitless&qid=1633068309&sr=8-2
I am now reading this one, I am probably half way through or so ...
Hehe, I've just started. Although I am a fast reader, might catch up soon enough, especially given that weekend is ahead š
I now usually read round 50 pages a day, but most of the time from 2 or 3 books together and I also do notes etc. so I think you will š
It just last two weeks or so that I actually started reading as a daily habbit instead of reading once or twice a week
Great speed-reading, especially with doing notes! š
I just love to read, don't have a habit per se. I even don't make much of notes - they distract me from thinking and shifting my thoughts in some direction.
Hi everyone, I'd love to read about U.S. politics as it is one of the things I'm passionate about! Would you guys have any recommendations on good books?
