I kinda knew it was true, but man it is very true, haven't done any real tests, just opening each browser with btm and checking the ram consumption and true it is. Still i'm not sure how things will be with a little bit of chromium extensions, like adblockers and such, so for customization vivaldi is the one that uses less ram, but it uses more than vanilla chromium

#

but, you were right dude

#

but vivaldi will support manifestV2 (better adblockers) for a while, meanwhile chromium it's right now on manifest v3 (less support for adblockers)

Hello everyone, i was wondering if anyone has passed security + 701 and if there are any tips on studying. I'm currently using all of professor Messer free training course and taking notes on each video and topic, i also use pocket prep for security+ to test myself with different topics, and finally i use chat gbt to give me various questions on each topic and im currently getting 80% or higher. Is this a good way of learning 701 or should i be using other tools. anything helps. Thank you

Hello, I'm interested, how is it going with you?

I’m contemplating switching my major from Informatics with a concentration in Cybersecurity to Computer Science with a concentration in Cybersecurity. I think logically employers would respect a CS degree over an Informatics degree. I’m trying to make the decision before the start of the Fall 2025 semester. If you have an opinion on this, please feel free to respond.

hollow plume
# valid locust I’m contemplating switching my major from Informatics with a concentration in Cy...

this is only based on what i've read online but yes, i think employers would prefer a cs degree as it tends to be more well rounded.

have you looked into the differences in the curriculum at your university? as cs majors usually do not only more maths, but also at a higher level and tend to also have to take physics classes. i think that'd help to keep the door open with more possible career options. cs is more theory heavy than IT though. but a good foundation in theory will help you to have a solid understanding of the concepts once you're actually applying them.

however, from what i know, maths, especially higher level maths and let alone physics, isn't really needed for cybersecurity. so it's up to you if you're willing to take on more maths and maybe even physics. if it aligns with your interest and you want to keep your career options more open then i'd recommend switching to cs.

i'm a cs student though! so my recommendation comes with bias. but i think either way, both majors are still good! i prefer cs since i like maths and i want to keep my options open for more maths heavy fields. i also don't mind doing theory.

if you can, try to consult with an academic advisor at your university.

i’m not familiar with those fields, particularly ux/ui but i’m assuming you’d have to learn design software, like something from the adobe suite

cybersecurity? most likely. there are certifications you can earn online. but cybersecurity isn’t an entry level field. you usually have to start off in something like IT support, like at a helpdesk.

as for data science, that’s maths so stats specifically and from what i know you’d need a relevant degree to get into it

Hello World

I’m an International Business & Trade student looking for a buddy who can help me out with Framer. For my final year bachelor project, I want to build a cool website to impress my teachers. I’ve already made the prototype in Adobe XD. Of course, your time is valuable, so I’m happy to negotiate a price. DM me or reply to this message if you’re down to help a fellow student out!

Hi guys, I'm having an issue with trying to install Linux Debian 12 Bookworm

About my situation:

  • Lenovo Thinkpad x1 Carbon Gen 8 (16gb RAM, 512gb ssd) , boots to BIOS and previously ran windows 10 pro with no issues

  • Trying to install Debian 12 Bookworm using a 2gb USB I created using balena etcher

I have never used Linux before and am fairly unfamiliar with things like programming and IT. I would have started with Linux mint but I require the use of x11 and KDE Plasma 5 (not 6) for my use case involving Krita and my drawing tablet

The first error message I encountered was "failure of key exchange and association." This problem was unexpected and I do not know where it may be coming from as I have never had any issues connecting to my wifi network using this password on any other devices. Multiple other devices were using the network when I received this message.

After this I decided to use my phone's hot spot. With this I was able to install the base system, but received the "Bad Archive Mirror" error after selecting United States (where I am), then selected the default archive mirror. After receiving the error message I attempted to connect to the US specific one but received the same bad archive mirror error.

I have now aborted the download and started over from scratch, wiping the USB and ISO files and rewriting them 3 times, and the same error messages occur in the same situations every time. If anyone has any ideas as to why I cannot connect to a network I have never had any past issues with, I would appreciate it.

# toxic zephyr Hi guys, I'm having an issue with trying to install Linux Debian 12 Bookworm Ab...

i have had this issue on older debian version as well
like 4 years ago my track pad didn't work out of the box as well and i had to install the driver separately. I guess that your this device is new as well(my device new at the time). For debian it takes time to update. It tries to more stable so it doesn't have the newest kernels and updates. My recommendation is that if you want something like debina try out ubuntu in live (i am not a fan of ubuntu) and see if it works. If that didn't work check out endeavour os it is basically arch but you have the option to boot in live mode as well. i think that endeavour os will probably work. you can checkout fedora as well it is something between arch and debian in terms of updates.
just wondering, why do you need kde plasma 5 explicitly? and i know that if you use the complete installation iso (not the netinstall) you need more then 2gb for the usb stick
sorry if it's too long
btw writing this on debian 12

#

you can dm if you needed help

hollow plume
#

i haven't had those issues before but i'm happy to try and troubleshoot it with you if you still haven't solved it. i'm running nobara os atm which is fedora* based and i previously ran arch for a long time

toxic zephyr
#

Update: the issue happened to be the network, I set up a temporary 2.4g network and connected to that rather than the usual 5g network I use with everything else and I was able to go through the normal Debian install process, got to the very end where it asks the user to remove the USB and let it reboot, which I did, but it never came back up. It won't even boot to the BIOS anymore. The only thing that happens is when I plug it in, the red dot of the i in the thinkpad logo on the cover blinks red 3 times. I tried hitting the emergency reboot hole with a paperclip twice, both times pressing for exactly 10 seconds, and nothing happened.
tried to hard reset by removing the battery and holding down the power button for 15-20 seconds. Nothing changed, I still get the light blinking 3 times and no boot. I'm worried I either didn't remove the USB fast enough or removed it too late at the very end there

#

This device came to me with 92% battery health btw

hollow plume
#

it shouldn't matter if you didn't remove the usb fast enough or removed it very late after it asks you to remove it

#

so do you get nothing at all when you try to turn your device on?

toxic zephyr
#

Nothing

hollow plume
#

did you try the bios key for your device?

#

i think it's F1 for thinkpad

#

you basically spam press it at boot

toxic zephyr
#

Yeah, nothing happens, not even the Lenovo splash screen comes up

hollow plume
#

so aside from that and removing the battery, have you tried anything else?

toxic zephyr
#

No, I'm not sure what else I could do

hollow plume
#

okay just checking to see what you've done so i can get rid of it as a possible solution

toxic zephyr
#

thanks

hollow plume
#

how long have you owned the device?

toxic zephyr
#

Less than a week, I got it off ebay

hollow plume
#

how long were you running windows 10 for?

toxic zephyr
#

I'm not sure how long the device was running it, I only had it for a couple days

#

It came to me with windows 10 pro already installed

hollow plume
#

okay i'm just gonna do some googling

#

do you have an external display?

toxic zephyr
#

I do

hollow plume
#

could you try connecting it and booting up?

#

i don't think it'll help tbh but easiest possible solution to cross out

toxic zephyr
#

Yeah nothing comes up

hollow plume
#

by any chance did you get the thinkpad for a really good deal?

#

i'm thinking it could be a hardware issue

#

you were able to run windows 10 fine so that's why i'm not 100% certain on it but you also seem to have only ran it for a short period of time

toxic zephyr
#

The seller had another one of the same model and specs and it ended up selling for the exact same price as the one I bought

#

I can send you the listing if you want?

hollow plume
#

no it's okay. they said nothing was wrong with it? does the seller have good reviews?

toxic zephyr
#

98.2% positive from 246 feedback reviews and they sell a lot of other thinkpads. The description of the listing I bought said "tested and everything else is working. Fresh install of win 10 pro. Battery capacity is 46860/51010Wh"

hollow plume
#

you would just be removing it then putting it back in

toxic zephyr
#

Yeah I can try that, I was planning on taking it to a technician later today at a computer repair shop

hollow plume
#

ohh it might be best to just take it to a computer repair shop. is it a trustworthy one?

toxic zephyr
#

Yeah it's a local place that's pretty highly recommended

hollow plume
#

okay, i'd recommend just taking it first there then. hopefully they can sort it out. just let them know

  1. what you were doing - you were trying to install linux and were able to complete the installation process until you tried to reboot the device. but nothing longer appears at boot and you're unable to boot into bios even after trying to press the bios key
  2. what you've tried to help solve it - removing the battery and holding down the power button for 15-20 seconds

let them know that you noticed you get 3 blinking lights. from my googling, depending on the thinkpad model (i think something to do with older and new models), this could either be nothing or it could indicate a hardware issue

if you want, try to also suggest removing the cmos battery

toxic zephyr
#

Thanks man I'll let you know what happens

hollow plume
#

i~~'ll also just add that it could also possibly be settings you might've had to configure in the bios before trying to install linux, or something you did during the installation process.~~ nvm i feel like it's likely a hardware issue. lots of factors to consider, but hopefully the repair shop can help. feel free to let me know how it goes. best of luck!

toxic zephyr
#

brought to the shop and i'll probably hear back from them in 24 hours or so

hollow plume
#

okay fingers crossed they can fix it

#

also i'm assuming, that if they do fix it, they'll tell you what was wrong with it (i've never been to a repair shop since i just fix everything myself so i'm not sure how they work but anyway)

if that's the case, try to also ask them what they did to fix it. note it down, so that if you encounter the same issue again in the future then you know how to troubleshoot it. but also, if they were (unfortunately) unable to fix it, it'd also still be good to ask what they tried. that way, if you want to take it to a different repair shop then you can let them know what the previous one has tried, or if you want to try to fix it yourself then you know what's already been tried

#

just if you want to 🫡

toxic zephyr
#

thanks man i'll see what happens

toxic zephyr
#

got the laptop back! its all working now, turns out i just had the right charger. kinda embarrassing it was such an incosequential issue but im glad everything is okay

Depends on your goal, it’s cheaper to get the hardware for a PC + typically has better performance for the same money as a laptop in the same price range, but consumes a shitload more power (and depending on where you live, power can be expensive asf)

Personally I’m planning on using my M4 MacBook Pro as a machine to use docked + portable, with a pc for server tasks/gaming that can’t be done on an M4 mac

currently using my HP laptop as a desktop which I occasionally take with me, works well for most stuff cause it’s recent-ish, but hard to do any serious gaming with Vega graphics

#

And bonus for laptops is when they get old you can use them as power efficient servers or smth if you like 🤷‍♂️ - saying as I occasionally run my 2015 MacBook Air as a media server n stuff

Depends on what you count as “tech” - Linux and PCBs are both under the tech umbrella but very very different things iykwim

On that note, for computers, and more specifically Linux, Techno Tim (+ T.T. Tinkers), HardwareHaven, Chris Titus Tech - these are probably the most solid yt channels for it, though a lot is best learnt from experience - for eg. I got curious about penetration testing, so I gave Kali Linux a try since it had a lot of stuff ready out of the box and neatly organized (I’m not advertising Kali as a good Linux distro, merely my humble beginnings with Linux)

# idle dew Hello I'm new here. I just searched for a server that talks about technology bec...

hi i just searched up the BSIT course and see that it's very broad and covers a little bit of everything meaning you don't need much background knowledge for the course (if it was a requirement it'd probably say so)

though, i see that it covers topics such as: data structures, networking and operating systems

i haven't taken BSIT myself so i wouldn't know exactly but to get a sort of headstart i'd recommend you look up some sort of gcse/a-level computer science textbook to skim through on the topics that you're expecting on the course. since they're highschool textbooks for a introductory computer science course i feel like it would be laid out in an easy to understand way for someone who doesn't have much knowledge on tech in general

not very helpful, but not everything works for everyone, so whilst James (or anyone for that matter, myself included ofc) might use x, you might find x doesn't suit the bill for you, and instead find y better for your way with interracting with yur linux machine :)

that being said, i believe some things in the dotfiles might give in to what programs he's used in the past, maybe not though, depends and i can't know for sure without having gone through them myself, though i recon you've gone through them yourself and not found them

Hey, guys!
I recently started using Obsidian, and I really like the app. However, I strongly dislike the need to pay for synchronization between my Mac and iPhone.
I've tried using Syncthing and iCloud, but they don't work as I'd like (mostly due to iOS system limitations; my MacBook works as it should).
So, what's your setup? What are you using? Do you use it on just one device and don't need to sync, or do you use other storage options? Do you actually pay for Obsidian Sync?
Please share your experience.

excalidraw would allow for that

gloomy lily

like its just an embedded window

#

so its kinda meeh you kow?

#

idk it just didnt feel right

wicked cosmos
#

i'll try it out sometime and give you my thoughts i've only used excalidraw standalone and thought it was pretty good for what it does

gloomy lily
#

also as im still in school when I get paper sheets i need to be able to write on them, and i dont think theres an easy way for that with excalidraw

wicked cosmos
#

surely you can take a picture of the sheet and slap it into excalidraw to draw over it

gloomy lily
#

that works but again is kinda hackish

#

and ideally id use the ios scan function to get a proper image, but then the workflow would be super complex::

  • go to files app to scan the sheet
  • go back to obsidian
  • create an excalidraw canvas
  • create an image "widget" and select the scanned pdf
  • write
#

well tbf, airdrop exists so most of the time I dont need to scan it myself

wicked cosmos
#

yeah that's fair

idk though it's not really an issue i've had myself though since in my school we don't really get worksheets

Hello, I am going to participate in a business planning competition, I choose to make a technology business plan whose products are hardware and software (IoT) for agriculture, such as temperature sensors, soil moisture, weather forecasts, and several other sensors and software. but I still don't know how to explain the production of the product later, because of course IOT production must be carried out by an IoT manufacturing factory. I heard about EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services). can that be a solution?, if not, can you give me some advice for that?. but if yes, can anyone explain EMS to me?, I can ask AI for the basics, but I haven't been able to find information about the average price of the service, what the company is (I live in Asia), how the design will be, etc. Thank you.

i came here because i need a budget (~$200) ereader that can do pdfs hopefully (https://github.com/koreader/koreader; calibre). Saw jvscholz recommendation in his vid of a nook glowlight 4. Don't need notetaking capabilities, but android would be nice. Mainly for reading for a long time without eye strain or having reference material open on the side. Tbh a bigger screen would be better but what can you really ask for at this price. Looking for other opinions, otherwise I might just have to spend a lot of time on reddit ;-;

# shy vapor looking at the kobo clara color/bw too

i can say that the kobo clara color is rlly good! the battery life is great and for kobos they’re made to last so it’s a good investment!! it’s also super simple to load PDFs and .epub files onto ur kobo :)

the only downside i can think of for the color version is the kaleido 3 screen, it isn’t too bright when you’re outside, so if you like high contrast i recommend the bw. kobo also isn’t android based unfortunately 💔 if you want an ereader less than $200 and w/ an android OS i’d recommend you read some reviews of any of the boox ereaders, i don’t have one myself so i can’t say much

mtech is quite important these days

#

dosent matter if u do btech in cse or ece

#

the only jobs u gonna get through btech will be IT services

#

mainly indian companies like tcs and prolly a few US ones like cisco or SF

#

not relly good jobs tbh

#

take data science as a mtech specialization through any btech

#

if u get a tuition waver, take it

shy vapor
#

yeah i would like it to last a long time if thats not a given lol

#

good point

outer hinge
#

but yes it’ll last a while!

#

glad i could help

shy vapor
#

yeah i just mean that nothing will break

#

like it lasts a while

#

contrast outside is not a huge deal to me but seeing my files on other devices/backups/easy sideloading is pretty important

outer hinge
#

yeah i’d recommend KOReader if you do get a kobo!! makes reading ur sideloaded books easier and sync ur progress

#

i bought the truthear zero reds but I'm probably going to return them

#

not because they're bad, but they aren't THAT much better than my current headphones

#

I don't think the upgrade in sound quality or imaging is worth £40

#

everyone seems to have such varying opinions on the IEMs it's really hard to find one that I'd consider buying

#

some people say everything is perfect, others will say that there's no bass and that it broke after 5 days of use

bright quail
#

the red is pretty good

#

diminishing returns in audio is real and the price for it constantly keeps dropping as manufacturers continue to put variations of their higher end tech into their lower priced offerings
if you don't think the upgrade to the zero red was worth it, i honestly don't you're going to find anything mind-blowing at this price range

#

if it's not that much of an upgrade to you, i might suggest you just keep using what you have and save for a bigger budget later on

bright quail
#

it's so subjective that they let you refund anything you buy from them for a whole year just so you get to live with it and figure out whether you actually like it or not

abstract sierra
#

I don't think there's anything different other than the imaging and sound stage between the EQ reds and whatever i'm making them sound like

bright quail
#

there won't be

#

that's not what EQ does

#

you want imaging, that's a quality problem, you're going to need better iems
you want sound stage, that's kind of what iems aren't good at and you should look at headphones instead

#

you also aren't going to EQ one pair of iems into other iems, otherwise why would there be so many iems? 😂

#

EQ tuning is just for sound signature

#

playing with EQ is a good idea nonetheless, you might figure out something you like with the zero reds

#

but if it's sound stage you're looking for, you're looking at the wrong equipment entirely...

abstract sierra
#

yeah EQ just changes the tuning a little

abstract sierra
#

i can still tell if something is coming from behind me or in front of me

#

above or below

#

its more about the imaging and separation I think

#

the sounds shouldn't all mix together

gilded relic
#

is there a way to get all tweets by a user still? (free)

i tried it many* but none worked post the x api changes

shy vapor
#

its a 10th gen pw

#

unfortunately i cant "jailbreak" it and install koreader

#

idk how much im missing out on

#

but this honestly works fine

bright quail
#

speaking of old news, there's always letshuoer s12 which is quite an old pair of iems now ha

#

these two should have very good technicalities, and very within your price range

#

i've been out of the iem game ever since i got my latest pair (stop looking at things i don't need lol) but i think in the past year or two truthear released the nova, which has similar tuning to moondrop variations

#

this means truthear has both made a cheap blessing 2 with the hexa, and a cheap variation with the nova... 🤔 moondrop's blessing 2 and variations were widely considered among the best iems you can buy under 1k, and they cost a quarter/half that respectively
truthear making cheaper versions of those is, well, the reason the monetary value at which diminishing returns for audiophile equipment begins keeps getting lower every single time a company releases something good :)

#

and a brand i never heard of before i went out of loop on iem world is simgot, but apparently their offerings such as the supermix 4 are also very competent

#

just a few suggestions - i haven't tried any of these, and i highly recommend being able to try or buy from a seller with strong return policy before committing to one

abstract sierra
#

i'm ngl I really need a job and I've spent wayyy too much money already, so I'm going to return these truthear reds and then either I'll wait a little and get the hexas/ supermix 4 or another iem that's a little over 100, OR, I buy better headphones for the gaming sessions with friends and then get a pair of earphones (hopefully the headphones + earphones would cost less than the iems + a mic) and use the earphones for when I'm studying/ coding and don't want big bulky headphones on my head

idle dew
#

Anyone knows how to solve this?

bright quail
#

in your position you do sound like you'd benefit from the iems a lot more - they're perfectly fine for gaming, and you could buy a modmic for them which is basically just a replacement iem cable with a pretty alright mic attached to it

Can y'all suggest which laptop i should go for considering both are priced same?HP Envy x360 14-es1023dx
Or Lenovo Yoga 7 14IML9 (Core Ultra 5-125U + Arc GPU)? My primary focus would be coding and doing uni assignments along with other basic tasks. (I don't game)

#

The last two are of the same model with different display options.

icy lotus
#

go for ultra series
ultra series have alot better iGPU(Arc) compared to the core i5 and i7 which are much weaker
for the display 100% DCI-P3 is the best one out there(check out if it is touch screen or not if that is your requirement)

Hey,
I’m planning to purchase a laptop.
Does anyone have experience using the Samsung Galaxy Book?

#

I’m not really interested in a MacBook since it doesn’t allow much customization, and most of my work involves using Word and MS Office.

#

If you have any other suggestion then drop them.

#

(No gaming laptops)

clever epoch
#

But Thank you so much.

bright quail
#

if you're buying the laptop for school, check what kind of programs your courses will use and whether the school itself recommends against a mac or not

#

you might run into compatibility issues with some programs that you absolutely need to use, and you will either have to seek alternative ways to use them or purchase an entirely new laptop later on

#

one example is that ms access doesn't work on macos at all

bright quail
#

not really, most laptops all kinda feel the same to me and as long as you aren't looking for a gaming one, i genuinely don't feel like you'd go wrong - but i'm not that sensitive to laptop differences so other people would feel differently
personally i got a thinkpad t14s gen 4 for a pretty good deal

bright quail
# clever epoch if so how long ideapad lasts with a single charge?

the ideapad and thinkpad are two different lineups from lenovo, ideapads are aimed at the general consumer wheras thinkpads are intended for business use (businesses sell them in very good condition for pennies all the time, if used is an option for you)
mine can last like 15 hours on a full charge and probably another 5 more if i were really economical in my settings and usage
i can't relate that to an ideapad but i'd probably drop it to about half the time as a consumer-oriented laptop
i know a few people with ideapads and they seem quite happy with them, though

well keyboard needs some work cuz i couldnt find any cool ones

polar ferry
# gloomy lily oh its perfect

that's neat. I've been digging around with Joplin for a bit. Local-storage markdown note editor with handwriting features as well :)

gloomy lily
#

but mine works almost the same, except i edit the drawing using xournalpp, then convert the xournalpp file to a .png which is then embedded

#

though i now have to run $ gen.sh after every change to get the .png

wicked cosmos
#

how does embedding images work

gloomy lily
#

but I dont render it until I execute gen.sh and open the generated html file in a browser

#

and for drawings I first write notes in xournalpp with an .xopp format, then gen.sh converts them to images.

#

image is also resizable if u use a proper browser, you can pull it down so an embedded png does not take up all the space by default and can still be viewed properly
