# sand prairie Can someone help me with my micromouse maze solver.I;'m a beginner at this so I'...

Im not really familiar with what micromouse maze solver is, but im guessing it should find a way out of the maze from some entance point. If you havent already done that, i suggest adding some sort of variable, a matrix for example, that should keep track of where you have been in the maze already, so you dont go that same path twice unless you are backtracking to the last point where the new undiscovered path begins

I've been seeing a lot about the Supernote a6x2 (nomad), the upcoming supernote a5x2, the boox 10.3 and the boox note air 4c.
Which one would you recommend? Mainly for university (taking notes, viewing pdfs/writing on them, syncing files, ...)

Hello guys. Howdy?
I'm planning on upgrading my laptop but unsure where I can check if I'll have any issues with the component. I want to get a 32 x2 gb ram. I have a 16gb and it keeps not being enough as my tabs get closed when I am working

If anyone knows a website where to check for compatitibility would be apprecisted especially for laptops .. never changed ram for a laptop

ruby crater
#

Hello, I'm planning on finally getting a laptop soon and I've been thinking for the longest time that I should learn programming/coding. I have no idea how to start I don't even know the basics of it, or which language I should learn. Could anyone please direct me? Anything is helpful, thank you!

ruby crater
#

Thank you so much that's very helpful!!

#

Oh and I wanted to know which language is most wanted in terms of jobs?

mint ice
#

it would depend on the jobs that you want

#

like if your going to pursue in Machine learning related python would be useful

ruby crater
#

If I'm more of a website person then I should stick to what the other person said right? I'll start w python and go from there! Thank you so much for taking time to answer me I really appreciate it. Have a great day

open solstice
#

to be honest I would not recommend starting with python if you want to learn programming logic

#

starting with a lower level oop language would help you much more

#

yes, the python is easier, but if you learn java or c++ for example you will understand the programming logic much better

#

and it will be easier to learn other languages as well

#

I would personally recommend java

#

and if you want to learn about backend engineering you can dive into java spring after you learn java fundementals

open solstice
#

if you want to develop backend you can also go into backend or frontend or both

#

if you want to go into backend you don't really need html, or css or any of the frontend stuff

#

again, I think java will give you the required programming logic for every field

#

you can also use it to develop the backend of your website

#

but python is not really useful for web developers

#

so if you have no clue about what you want to go into, and just learn the basics and the concepts of programming languages, just go with java/c++

Hello, I recently bought the M2 MacBook Air 15 and noticed that when it's shut down, it doesn't charge. The LED on the charging cable keeps turning on and off, and each time it does, the charging sound plays. It charges fine when it's in sleep mode or open, but this issue happens only when it's shut down.

Hi guys

I am currently an undergraduate informatics student. As part of a group project, we are conducting interviews with IT professionals (especially at web developer) to learn more about their career paths, daily responsibilities, the skills needed in the field, and any advice they may have for students like us who are just starting out.

We would be honored if any of you could share your valuable experiences with us. The interview would also be recorded for reference & project's requirement.

If you could spare some time for this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for considering our request, and I look forward to your response.

Question: What is the necessity to buy an expensive laptop? Buy an used ThinkPad. A T440 to T480 are great choices.

#

I have a T440 myself, it's been a solid choice for a backup laptop. I have it with 8GB of RAM, a 240GB SATA M2 (running OpenBSD) and a 240GB SSD for Arch Linux.

#

Not to mention, these latest ThinkPads are a disgrace. They are far from what they used to be in terms of customization, robustness and quality.

# idle dew to have more power?

Okay, it's your money, but be aware that it's unnecessary money if you don't need to do anything really heavy (gaming or editing videos). If you want something with processing power, get a T480.

id still choose thinkpad tho. macs dont even have usb-a, u cant change battery, only supports macos

actually macboik might be better if u travel a lot, as the chip is more energy efficient and therefore requires less charging. but since u also thought about mac mini/studio i assume u dont

#

oh also important if u prefer linux or macos. if u r gonna use windows ob the thinkpad, id buy mac

cuz windows is not unix-like(we like unix for coding) and also it gets increasingly worse and annoying

i might start using linux when i have to do more coding but for the time being its not that much, so im leaning towards a macbook but ill try to get other insight for now

i think macbook is better either way if ur not gonna use linux.
macbook as better screen, good keyboard, rlly good touchpad

Hello Everyone, I am looking for a KVM or something similar.
I have;

  • 2 laptops
  • a pc and
  • another device.

My goal is to have;

  • my headphones and mic that are connected to the audio interface,
  • keyboard,
  • mouse
  • webcam
  • if possible speakers and
  • two monitors
to be connect to the KVM.

I won't be using all 4 devices at the same time, all the time.
I want it to be easy to disconnect the laptops.
So in the best case scenario, I'd have 2 usb C and a hdmi or dvi cable that connects the KVM to the pc and laptops.
I want to be able to switch between the devices easily.

Do I need a server rack for something like this? or is there some sort of docking station or KVM, or am I looking for something that doesn't exist or just completely at the wrong place?

Thank you in advance.

for the terminal:

  • learn how commands work generally: all commands are executable binaries located in directories specified in the PATH variable. eg: when echo $PATH prints /usr/bin:/usr/sbin it means that commands are in /usr/bin and /usr/sbin so if u type „ls“ in the terminal it will find the ls binary in either /usr/bin or /usr/bin
  • learn how command arguments and options work: for „ls -a /„ -a would be an option(meaning include hidden files), and „/„ would be an argument(meaning in directory /), so it would list all files in /. these options are explained in the man pages.
  • learn about command option arguments(like „ls —sort=extension“ listing files sorted by .extension in the current directory)
  • learn about the linux filesystem hierarchy structure standart(FHS): /etc is global configuration, /home/<username> is user files, …

nvm i still should study physics and ill probably only confuse u anyway.
u can ping me if u got questions. id just try using the terminal as much as you can as thats the way youll learn it. also when installed to hardware, keep backups regularly using something like timeshift or snapper.
If you wanna get rlly good with terminal and make ur own scripts, id advice to learn bash(most common shell) or posix shell(most compatible shell but more difficult to use, faster too). shells are just the programms that resolve commands typed in the terminal and handle stuff like variables, ifs, whiles, …
shell redirections are also common so id learn that too, in its most primitive form it can be used to write the output of a command to a file: echo „hello world“ > foo.txt. echo prints „hello world“ to standart output and writes standart output to foo.txt

#

oh and .bashrc and .profile files are also important. alias command and functions can also be useful for shortcuts(like if u want to type „docs“ to „cd ~/Documents“)
alr physics time 😩

solar torrent
# mighty hawk yoo gois I got a question and I know you lot are knowledgeable in this matter. A...

are you into courses or books tho? and for what you want to get into linux? is it for normal daily usage, or for career like sys admin stuff?

Since Linux is an operating system (like windows), you can install it either on a hardware like laptop/pc on maybe external drive or separate partition with dual boot. But it's always better to install it on a virtual machine first in the beginning, could be VirtualBox or VMware or a similar software that acts as an independent machine

And since you're new to this, it's better to find a Linux distribution that has a desktop environment already installed so it looks familiar(UI like windows with buttons and menus etc), I think Linux Mint or Ubuntu could be a good choice for that

Installing these distros is simple if ur installing them on a fresh drive that doesn't have data. U won't need to partition the desk with cli or install bootloaders or anything for them manually (unless you wanted to)

Then start your Linux journey, which will probably begin by learning a bit of the abstract picture, what the kernel does and what is a user space, then learn terminal commands for basic use.

From that point u can get into more complicated topics like init and its implementations, installing services, processes, networking and so on.

#

For books:
The book "How Linux Works" was probably the major one (for me).
If u can spend money on comptia Linux+ official book (or can get it somehow 🔨 ) would be nice.

For courses there are those big youtube videos that are for free and are also pretty good, studying one big course from these ones on youtube is a nice milestone. There's a paid course I think $23 a month in zerotomastery academy.

And there's an interactive website https://linuxjourney.com/ I haven't tried it, but I heard ppl who did and liked it.

# clear tide (also posted in general-help-chat) Hello, can somebody guide me? I'm on my first...

Its good and all to learn things on the side but I'd say, focus on the following in order: getting an internship, getting some kind of paid on campus research that's basically an internship during the school year, grades, personal project fully built out that you can show at an interview, then networking with people who can get you a job. If i had to do it all over again, I'd work towards an app I can monetize so unemployment hurts less.

In terms of learning more about computer stuff, I liked the computer history museum in San jose, but really it was just computing machines from way back then, big room sized computers, then modern stuff. Intro to computer science was decent at an overview of computer science as a whole. You'll most likely have to take a networking course so that can probably wait. The computer architecture course explained a lot about how computers work.

JWT consists of 3 parts. header, payload, signature right? the properties of payload part are called claims. header has info about the token itself like the (signing) algorithm used. Signature is simply using the public key from hashing both header+payload with a secret key if you used an asymmetric algorithm.

#

iss is a mandatory property(claim), u can give it any name, it just refers to whoever is issuing the jwt. Your app's name for example

solar torrent
#

Ops, I reread your message, i missed the aud part. The iss is the token creator/provider, aud is the opposite. It's the recipient. "The audience of a token is the intended recipient of the token."

The JWT will contain an aud claim that specifies which Resource Servers the JWT is valid for. If the aud contains www.myfunwebapp.com, but the client app tries to use the JWT on www.supersecretwebapp.com, then access will be denied because that Resource Server will see that the JWT was not meant for it
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/28418360/jwt-json-web-token-audience-aud-versus-client-id-whats-the-difference

dire finch

# solar torrent Ops, I reread your message, i missed the `aud` part. The `iss` is the token crea...

but why are aud and iss are important? I mean, isn't the signature enough?
cuz what happens in the server is validating the signature then validating the issuer and audience
why validating the issuer and audience matters? if the signature validation didn't pass then validating issuer and audience doesn't make sense to me (ofc there's something am missing here but am thinking loudly)
that's one thing.
the other thing is:
ok, the issuer is the one who created the token and the audience is the one whose this token made for him. and?
how should i make use of this? I mean without using issuer and audience, what's gonna happen?

and ty for ur response btw, i appreciate it

solar torrent
# frigid jewel but why are aud and iss are important? I mean, isn't the signature enough? cuz w...

No problem about the thinking out loud part.

Look, the signature is about validating that the token hasn't been manipulated by someone then resent to the server. Because the server HAS to trust the payload hasn't been manipulated by attackers. It's the whole point of a JWT.

If there isn't a signature that means u can forge your own JWT with any value you want and provide it to the server. So if the server is basing roles based on a claim, u can get admin privs => escalating your privileges in the application.

That's the purpose of the signature, it's about the token itself.

#

Now, you have 2 apps communicating, how do you know the JWT is from app X and not app Y? And how do you know that the app Z will be the JWT you created if you were app X.

So the claims now are about the applications using the token not the token itself.

#

Bear in mind when developing apps, there's a whole team in the company for the development cycle that includes security assessment

#

Though, app X can include iss or aud claim, but app Y might overlook it and not even use it. But it all depends on the context. They're mandatory but u can create the JWT however u want and include the claims you want. But their purpose is for security and ensuring that the token is created from maybe app X

#

To clarify the signature part of a JWT more, if there was no signature, the token would be a JSON object that's base64 encoded and that's it. It's like sending a POST request to any API to update a resource

frigid jewel
solar torrent
#

It's totally fine, it's not a straightforward topic

#

What do you know about signing and hashing data?

#

What from what I said also doesn't ring the bell?

frigid jewel
#

what confusing me is: the signature is made using claims (aud, iss, other claims)
so if the signature is wrong, it doesn't matter if the aud or iss are correct or not.
you gonna say: how do I know that the jwt is from app X and not from app Y

consider this scenario:
the server has created this jwt
jwt { key: "some_key", iss: "api", aud: "flutter" }
if the server received a jwt which their claims is like this:
jwt { key: "some_key", iss: "api", aud: "attacker" }
they can find out that this token is wrong cuz the signature is wrong

solar torrent
#

unless the app is misconfigured and this is a problem (a big one)

#

This is why you need to learn about the hashing part of the JWT

frigid jewel
solar torrent
#

okay, it makes since

#

@frigid jewel let me explain it fast,
on your jwt creation

  1. you have your jwt structure the header and payload with its claims ready
  2. you prep a private key (in asymmetric algo) with openssl or any tool
  3. you extract your public key from the private key
  4. private key signs the hashed header and payload with the private key and adds it as a signature
  5. But there's a public key that is used to verify the signature
SO, if you have the public key, that is normally shared with anyone and not a problem to share it, you can verify the signature of the token
The private key is used to sign + the public key (that is extracted from the private key with openssl also) is used to verify.

Any app using the public key can verify the validity of the signature. BUT HERE IS THE CATCH. The public key must come from a trusted place that app X provides that app Y can fetch or send a request to get it. Because if app Y trusts ANY public key that means u can create ur own token, sign it and provide it with public key and signature would be verified

#

yeah, i looked up the endpoint for public keys it's usually /.well-known/jwks.json

#

is it more clear now? Or still not that much?

frigid jewel
#

I think i understand what u said, sorry i wanna ask another question related to that (you can reply whenever u want)
the server created this token:
jwt {
key: "some_key",
iss: "api",
aud: "flutter"
}
and flutter client used it and everything is fine, what if someone stole the whole token of the flutter client?
the server is doomed right?

solar torrent
#

The server itself? no. But if that key claim you have is used to access sensitive information, that means whoever stole the token can access this sensitive information

#

or sensitive functionality

#

it highly depends on the context

#

But the token being stolen, stealing users' tokens is a problem/vulnerability in itself that shouldn't happen

frigid jewel
#

I understand now

#

if we got two applications (App A, App B) share the same signing key, one app could issue a token that another app mistakenly trusts.
so, when we use iss and aud:
When App A issues a JWT includes iss = appA.com
and another user got the token from App A and tried to access authorized resource from App B. App B receives it, the signature will pass but iss validation will fail
and if that user tried manipulate the iss and make it equal to appB.com
the signature validation will definitely fail

#

ty soooo much, man. I really appreciate ur help

To be very very honest, graduating with a ml / or even a general swe job by the next 2 months would be crazy cus youd have to had applied weeks ago to get into an interview process by now. Interview processes take like 2/3 months anyways. So I dont think you should have that deadline for yourself. And idk if ur based in the usa but most full time swe interview processes start in aug - december and most ppl have roles rn and not a lot of hiring going on rn, but some govt roles are def still hiring. So my plan for you is to 1. find companies that are hiring rn (amazon is hiring rn ik that) 2. connect with those companies recruiters on linkd, as many as u can tbh. 3. Ask any of your friends who're already working at that company to send a referral for that role. 4. Make sure the posted date for the role is fairly new, a week max. 4. Continue studying interview prep and applying. Really dont stress abt trying to find something in 2-3 unless u have a lot of connections, its unnecessary stress. 5. If you did any internships try to reah out to them if they have any open roles.

#

Its def doable if youre persistent and lucky but 2-3 is a short deadline, just keep applying a lot

#

also if you dont care abt the particular role I would also apply to ai/ml or tech consulting roles, they hire a lot too And if youre based in the usa u should apply for federal roles. And ml is competitive for new grads with only a bachelors degree, as we know. So if you don't know ur stuff i would focus all my attention to general swe interview prep.

brave is kinda bloated IMO

#

with many features and also some crypto stuff. The answer depends on your need tho. You can use netsurf if you don't need modern features, but if u want proper extension support id go with firefox or chromium

#

brave, vivaldi, opera, edge, etc. are all based on chromium anyways, so the only thing that may differ at ram usage is how many unnecessary features it has

#

it'd also be good if you would use something non-chromium so google wont get even more users so they can't rule the whole browser market
