Hi, im starting to learn coding and i have a problem with the Terminal part of Visual Studio. Previously i tried to make a Chat GPT bot in telegram following tips from a YT vid (without having any actual idea about coding), which involved opening files available in GitHub into the Visual Studio and doing certain coding, which i failed to accurately follow the rules and eventually weren't able to do anything and gave up. But now that I've downloaded the app again and try to practice coding, there seem to be something wrong with the Terminal. apparently it's supposed to start with $ but instead has other things going on which is related to the files i previously opened in the app... help please?

I understand that it's difficult to support updates for both windows 10 and 11, but why lie to me about the minimum requirements? My laptop has a worse processor than the computer I'm on right now and it ran windows 11 just fine.

dapper niche
#

the minimum requirements are not based on performance, but security. (is probably what is going on in your case) You're talking about TPM, so it's not about the processor being "better" or not, but whether it has TPM. I saw some articles that there is a way to bypass TPM, but I don't know whether it has any harmful side effects if you do it, etc.

I am new to programming.
I was trying to learn C for a class next semester. I was trying to build a test project to see if I could create a project with makefile. It would give me the write value when I tried running it on the terminal but when I run the main file on vscode, it says undefined reference to the function.
I don't know what to do next.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

I was wondering if there are any people here that have worked in IT and transitioned into Programming and if they felt that it was worth it, especially with the oversaturation of programmers. I graduated with a Computer Science degree but didn't really apply myself and didn't have any personal projects because I couldn't think of anything to make that would benefit me in the real world where I wouldn't just be making it for the sake of making a project. Thankfully I was able to get an IT help desk job about a year after I graduated so its atleast tech related work so I'm in a field im interested in and I don't hate it but not sure where to go after I get my year of experience. I plan on trying to build some programming projects to have a portfolio and to see if I enjoy it. I am in a financially precarious situations so the idea of switching jobs anytime soon, especially switching fields is scary. Would love to hear some stories or get any advice.

# narrow wren I was wondering if there are any people here that have worked in IT and transiti...

Getting a job nowadays is difficult, and switching careers can be a challenge. It's important to prioritize your goals. If I may suggest, ask yourself what your current priority is: income or career?
If you're ready to face the consequences, go for it. People find themselves in various situations, but in my case, I cannot blame others for the decisions I make.
I hope my opinion can be helpful.

glad garden
# narrow wren I was wondering if there are any people here that have worked in IT and transiti...

It depends also on the country/area you’re living. In some countries qualified people are scarce. Don’t underestimate social skills as well. You might have lots of programmers but you need to conduct yourself, be confident, know how to talk etc. Personnel managers smell that pretty quickly if one is a hack but socially in the basement dweller department, to give a figure of speech (nothing wrong with basements!). I know someone who abandoned her PhD for a programming job. She enjoyed it way more and is also appreciated by the business. She doesn’t regret it.

# narrow wren I was wondering if there are any people here that have worked in IT and transiti...

I know a lot of IT sys admins who became DevOps/SRE or cloud engineers. The pay is way better, it is almost always at the top: https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2023/#work-salary. Also there is no oversaturation there, they are always needed: you can't have a product without an infrastructure.

Usually they don't code in a sense of classical programming (like web services), but they do code a lot of infrastructure (for such web services), manage CI/CD and do bunch of scripting/configurations.

i have two laptops and i don’t know which one is better and which i should keep

Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 Gen 8
i5-10210U
16gb ddr4
256 ssd
intel iris graphics

pros: light and thin and runs what i need

cons: doesn’t run any of the games i want to play with friends but runs bare minimum on a game like valorant for 30 fps

this is my current laptop and the next laptop is free for me i dont know if i should upgrade to it

  1. ASUS ROG Zephyrus GA401I
    Ryzen 5 4600HS
    16gb DDR4
    1tb ssd
    GeForce GTX 1650 ti

(no pros and cons as it hopefully with advice going to be the upgrade)

what do i use it for?
School work, im doing a levels. maths economics and computer science. i travel a lot between peoples houses and the library and it would go in a backpack. multitasking too. i use adobe audition very often alongside discord and or fl studio. discord very often because i talk to friends all the time. also i play games every so often with my friends but im not sure about how much time i have to do that.
i’m learning to code so thats going to have python on 24/7. both laptops primarily stay off and connected to a monitor keyboard and mouse but again i travel a lot. lenovo has windows 10 pro and asus has windows 10 home.

A lot of CS grads immediately want to go work at FAANG without realizing that sometimes you might have to go through that one shitty job first before even getting close to FAANG because they either lack skill or experience

#

And "shitty" cs jobs are easy to find imo, you just have to settle for a sub-70K salary and shit benefits for a few years

#

But hey, programming is programming and experience is experience

dusky hatch
# brazen walrus yes, worked 2.5 years as software engineer in ML/NLP team. ask away 🙂

How could I try to get into that field? What job should I aim to get first? I have a bachelor in translation and I’m studying a masters in translation technology. I’m learning a lot of stuff related to ML, NL, Python, Automatic translation and lots of translation tools.
I’m really interested in all that but I feel companies will rather prefer people with background in CS or something more related to engineerings.
Atm in working hard in becoming proficient in Python but idk what else I could do

#

I always feel it will be to hard for me to get a job there cause of my linguistic background 😦

brazen walrus
#

Hello @dusky hatch
I will try to give some advice, but take it with a grain of salt (as with any advice).

My situation:
I used to be a java developer, and then switched to ML + NLP because my CS specialisation at university was machine learning and NLP (specifically language modelling).
The ML team needed a Java backend developer for one project, but also needed some ML/NLP knowledge for other projects, and I fit the bill. After that project was finished, I basically started working as a Python engineer for NLP services in the same team.
So in my case, I studied it and then got a job.

About the learning stuff:

NLP:

  • NLP nowadays is mostly about LLMs (giant transformer models), because they can do most of the tasks that used to require specific models (like a fine-tuned version of Bert, but nowadays you can throw anything at an LLM).
  • There is also the usual document/image parsing (models like LayoutLM/XLM), which are also transformers, but are not LLMs.
  • And the usual object detection in text (which are convolutional neural networks like Yolo models).
  • Machine translation (I am not very familiar with this, but I would guess that large transformer models play a big role here as well).

Software engineering:

  • Python
  • Cloud knowledge (preferably AWS) and infrastructure (e.g. how to host models)

So you can start learning these topics. I would encourage you to focus on the software engineering part (especially cloud, as you already know python).

Job:
It's true that CS background is preferred, but I wouldn't worry much about it if you can't change it. If you can do a conversion masters then I would do that. If not, then not.
When looking for a job, look for Python backend roles. Once you have your foot in the door, you can start looking for NLP Python developer jobs.
Best of luck

I have a macbook pro m1 2020 model, and i want to get the ducky one 2 mini to connect to it. I plugged in the keyboard to the usb c ports on the macbook and it did not turn on. I even connected the laptop to a power supply, and it still did not work. The reason I'm trying this is because I want this keyboard to type on my laptop and on my windows machine, and be able to switch between the 2 machines. I'm trying not to get a whole new keyboard just for this to work. Has anyone tried this and worked it successfully?

I downloaded amaze file explorer and it also shows 4gb, but when I connect it to my pc with mtp, it shows 4gb. I want to know if I'm doing something wrong because this device doesn't even exist with just that little storage right? Here some screenshots https://imgur.com/a/1jg7GaX

That's how I learned Java anyway (in 2015/2016). It is pretty solid foundation, not much changed since then. There are super important basics covered, like lambdas, generics, collections, inheritance, general OOP etc. Most of the stuff apllies to other JVM languages as well, like Kotlin and Scala.

Boox Ultra tab C is their biggest tablet that i know of, Its about 800 american but thta have Q/C issues

#

ive held and uses one

pastel seal
void mulch
#

they feel nice but, the Q/C issues show

pastel seal
#

i personally use Remarkable 2 every day and it work very well

river crescent
#

I want a started device for now

#

Ideally under 300 usd

void mulch
#

like a starter tablet?

river crescent
#

Yeah e ink

#

Mostly for reading and some note taking

void mulch
#

Remarkable 2 is probably your best bet then. 300 american for a E-ink tablet is scare if you want to write on it

pastel seal
#

i agree*

river crescent
#

Remarkable 2 is 700 usd on amazon (I’m not from the us)

void mulch
#

Woosh I forgot

pastel seal
#

if you want to pay less for accesories just by compatible one on amazon

void mulch
#

so pricey

#

Try and find a preowned one on ebay

river crescent
#

Is it 300 in the us?

pastel seal
#

yeah in europe too

void mulch
#

my best adivce is, Preowned E-ink tablets are your best bet

#

Ebay, offerup, facebook marketplace? honestly

river crescent
#

So a kindle oasis or something like that might be my best choice

void mulch
#

you pay for the "premium"

anyways i gtg

river crescent

Apparently if I order from their website it’s 450 (with the pen)

#

350 without the pen

pastel seal
#

with a Referral Code

river crescent
#

So without the pen and 20% off it’s like 280 or so usd?

pastel seal
#

and then buy staeder pen on amazon theyre way cheaper

pastel seal
river crescent
#

I know this is kinda dumb

#

But do you mean these

pastel seal

no these

but the one with the eraser is really impressive for the price

#

so @pastel seal ?

pastel seal
#

bro arch is sooooo long to explain

frosty sequoia
#

i just want to go to that root/normal thing that happens when you want to install it i dont want this grub mf

pastel seal
#

i'm not really into linux but i know some discord serverrs where people could help u

frosty sequoia
#

yeah i checked that nothing related to this it seems its a problem related to dual booting not to arch itself

#

ok send them in dms

#

Grub is just a bootloader

#

So Im not quite sure what exactly you mean

frosty sequoia
#

yo its solved thanks tho

tepid ridge

how do u even use arch dude

I used it once and it fcked up my mind

#

btw

#

for beginners which linux distribution should I try?

vagrant scarab
tepid ridge
#

okay thanks dude

#

should I use arch?

vagrant scarab
#

it's up to you haha

#

it used to be my main distro

#

but there's a harder learning curve

tepid ridge
#

i like hard stuff

vagrant scarab

if you have the time to spare and are eager to learn then definitely

tepid ridge

I'll stick to ubuntu

ye

23.10 and some 22. something

vagrant scarab

ohh

#

get the lts version

tepid ridge
#

okay

vagrant scarab
#

it'll be 22.04.3

#

that's the stable one

tepid ridge
#

ohhkk

#

so i need an usb

vagrant scarab
#

yep

#

either that or a dvd drive but i used the usb method

tepid ridge

alright

you should have firefox by default

tepid ridge
vagrant scarab

oh

bro

hahaha

#

search "ubuntu software" in your launcher

that's where you download applications from, either that or you can do it from the terminal

it says

vagrant scarab

wait are you connected to the wifi or by ethernet?

vagrant scarab

vagrant scarab

i dont even know how to take a ss

tepid ridge
vagrant scarab

tepid ridge
#

thats it

tepid ridge
#

i installed brave

vagrant scarab
#

oh chrome doesn't appear in the software center if you search for it?

tepid ridge
#

ye

#

it does not

vagrant scarab
#

sorry, i'm a bit rusty in ubuntu and linux in general but that'd make sense since chrome is proprietary

#

i tried looking for some packages on the official ubuntu website and it's having some errors

#

i'm not sure if it's connected to your issue somehow

#

i'll keep looking for a fix

#

you don't like firefox? haha

#

@tepid ridge

#

try this in your terminal "snap debug connectivity"

tepid ridge
#

okay

vagrant scarab
#

i'm just reading through that

tepid ridge
#

oh

vagrant scarab
#

someone's also had the same issue as you before

tepid ridge
#

it says

#

connectivity Status:

vagrant scarab
#

ohh

tepid ridge
#

wait

#

says this

vagrant scarab
#

ok so those last two commands were successful

tepid ridge
#

yer

vagrant scarab
#

one of the answers says that the error might pass if you give it a few hours

#

but another common answer was that it might have something to do with your internet router settings, which is a little more complex

tepid ridge
#

ohh

#

i like complex stuff

vagrant scarab
#

maybe just try to install brave again every hour? or whenever you can

#

i'll keep trying to look for more solutions

tepid ridge
#

ye ill try later

vagrant scarab
tepid ridge

damn my wifi is so slow

oh shoot

its installing brave

vagrant scarab

tepid ridge
vagrant scarab

vagrant scarab
tepid ridge
#

bro's the life saver

vagrant scarab
#

hahaha nahh i just used google

tepid ridge
#

still

vagrant scarab
#

if you come across another problem, try to just copy and paste it in google

#

earlier i just searched "cannot query the store for updates: got unexpected HTTP status 408"

tepid ridge
#

oh okay

vagrant scarab
#

yeah, it's likely someone else has come across the same issues, especially if it's ubuntu since it's really popular

#

but if you can't find anything, you can always try to ask here: https://askubuntu.com/

you have to be specific when you ask on official linux forums, though. so make sure you’ve googled and tried every possible fix first. when you ask, be specific and list the things you’ve tried. the linux community is welcoming but they’re very strong on users taking initiative

tepid ridge
#

um one question

#

i still like have the windows files from my prev os

vagrant scarab
#

what type of files?

tepid ridge
#

idk

#

llike one file is$windows-ws

vagrant scarab
#

where did you see that?

tepid ridge
#

in my ssd

vagrant scarab
#

google xD

tepid ridge
#

so should i delete all that stuff

vagrant scarab
#

it seems like you can delete it if you want

tepid ridge
#

okay

vagrant scarab
tepid ridge
#

alright done

#

but some files are still there

#

like program files and stuff

vagrant scarab
#

do you still have windows installed?

tepid ridge
#

nah

#

@vagrant scarab

vagrant scarab
#

weird, there shouldn't be any windows related files if you wiped windows, from what i can remember but i could be wrong

#

are there a lot of them?

tepid ridge
#

4

vagrant scarab
#

ok not too many luckily

#

what are they called?

#

i'm betting it's safe to delete them but best to just make sure

vagrant scarab
#

then you can decide for yourself if you'll need it or not but if you're not sure then i'll try to help

tepid ridge
#
  1. MSO CACHE
  2. program files
  3. program files x86
  4. users
vagrant scarab
#

oh wtf

#

those should be gone

#

are they all under one folder?

tepid ridge
#

guess i did not clean my ssd

tepid ridge
#

ye

#

my ssd

vagrant scarab
#

i don't think you wiped it properly

tepid ridge
#

so how do i fix that 😢

vagrant scarab
#

i think ubuntu has a built in partition manager

tepid ridge
#

ahh another fresh install incoming

vagrant scarab
#

you can check to see your partitions through there

vagrant scarab
tepid ridge
#

so should i delete the ssd partiotion with windows

#

partition*

vagrant scarab
#

partitions can be tricky down the line if you don't do them properly at first

tepid ridge
#

im a baby in these stuff

vagrant scarab
#

is it on the same ssd?

tepid ridge
#

ubuntu?

vagrant scarab
#

yeah

#

your ubuntu and windows installation

tepid ridge
#

no

#

ubuntu is on my harddisk

#

ig

vagrant scarab
#

seperate storage devices?

#

so windows is on an ssd and ubuntu is on a hdd?

tepid ridge
#

ye

vagrant scarab
#

oh it should be fine then, you can delete the windows partition on your ssd if you want

#

then you can format that ssd so that you can access it from linux and use it

tepid ridge
vagrant scarab
#

search "disk utility" in your launcher

#

i'm a bit confused for as to where you have things installed haha

vagrant scarab
tepid ridge
#

okay then

vagrant scarab
#

either through there or you could do it through the terminal but i'd stick to gui applications for now until you get more comfortable

tepid ridge
#

then what

vagrant scarab
#

do you have a printscreen key?

#

or whatever it's called

#

i need a screenshot to see what it's showing

tepid ridge
#

no

#

its a 60% layout

#

my int is so slow

#

it shows the hdd and ssd

#

wiht partitions

#

with*

vagrant scarab
#

can you try "take a screenshot" from your launcher?

#

or maybe take a pic with your phone?

tepid ridge
#

i toook an ss

#

its goinf

#

*going

vagrant scarab
#

ok i'll just wait for it

tepid ridge
#

ok so i deleted the partitions

#

and i dont need a fresh install

vagrant scarab
#

the windows partition?

tepid ridge
#

deleted it

vagrant scarab
#

nothing you might've needed there?

#

like personal files

#

because it'll be permanently gone

tepid ridge
#

nah

vagrant scarab
#

ok you should be good then

tepid ridge
#

ye

#

and i created a new partition

#

thanks again!

vagrant scarab
#

nice, i was just about to suggest that haha

Huffman Codes are one of the most important discoveries in the field of data compression. When you first see them, they almost feel obvious in hindsight, mainly due to how simple and elegant the algorithm ends up being. But there's an underlying story of how they were discovered by Huffman and how he built the idea from early ideas in informatio...

Hi, I have an ThinkPad X201 (i5 varient)and it currently has 4GB of DDR3 RAM (2x2GB).

I am trying to upgrade it to 8GB (2x4GB) but after putting in the new RAM sticks the Laptop boots into GRUB, let's me choose an OS but then after few seconds of trying to boot that OS the laptop just restarts.

I have:

  • verified that 8GB should be working on the mainboard(both by checking Documentation and dmidecode)
  • verified that the RAM modules aren't damaged (by putting them in a Dell Latitude, they worked there)
  • verified that they do get detected (by checking in the ThinkPad's BIOS)
  • tried putting in the RAM and waiting a few minutes before booting it (idk, was recommended somewhere)
  • tried different operating systems (both from internal SSD and liveboot USBs)[same problem for all OSs]
  • tried 4GB + 2GB from the original (same problem occurs)
  • obviously tried having it plugged in and not plugged in

Would love to hear if anyone has any ideas on this.

I wanted something to lower website contrast for better reading on Safari/MacOS and found: Cascadea. Works great but I just saw this, which is basically saying it could possibly see passwords and stuff. Now I wonder if I really shouldn't use this or if it's sort of scaremongering. Found it in the official App Store.

marble topaz
#

Well it needs to edit the content after all
So yes - it could read passwords

slate sierra
#

I understand. But how did it manage to get into the App Store then? Is it because, idk… the app could but it doesn’t or something?

#

Very hard to judge the risk.

I have both. I bought the iPad pro with the bellemond writing paper screen protector and the onyx note5. I regret not saving my money and getting the flagship onyx e-reader. The onyx built in e-reader is kind of annoying but it looks good and I can highlight and erase highlights easily with the pro pen which has an eraser on the top. I dislike the double tap to change to eraser on the iPad. Of the apps I use, It seems like only goodreader5 has scribble to erase and I don't want to subscribe. If I had to choose, I would pick the iPad for textbooks and the note5 for novels. iPad also doesn't have tachiyomi or moonreader+. Maybe Samsung tablet was the way to go 😦

I have a question. I am trying to understand the hash function. Is its main purpose lets say to have a vector which is a list of unknown size and turn it into a fixed sized table? Am I correct in this statement?

marble topaz
#

well not really
The main purpouse of a hash function is to calculate a hash and those hashes can be used in a multitude of ways:

  • Cryptography (checking for equality without storing the data)
  • Validation (to check if a file has been altered)
  • Reducing complexity (hash maps)
#

and to that vector table thing:
Its less about size and more about runtime complexity

If you have a list and want to check if a value is already contained in it, you would need to check all values in the list.
this takes longer the longer the list is
we call this O(n) because the "work" the computer needs to to scales with n (length in this case)
double the length - double the work

checking if a value is already in a hash-* (hashmap, hashset, whatever) has a complexity of O(1) that means that it always takes the same amount of work to check
BUT KEEP IN MIND - the amount of work may be constant but it might not be small
Runtime complexity only gives information about the growth of work
so an O(n) algo is likely to be faster tha O(1) for small n

if a list has three elements you only need three check but with a hashtable even just calculating the hash might take longer

#

@zealous lily ^

zealous lily
#

Why is it that with a hashmap we don't have to check all the values in the list. Wouldn't it be the same complexity O(n) since all the values in the list would have a hash? Or are only a set amount of values in the has which reduce the work?

Hello guys, im sorry to do the classic, but i have a question. I tried to use Docker for my webapp in the google cloud shell. When trying to run the container it seems like the process is running and you can see its accessible on port 80. But when trying to access the website through its external IP it doesnt let me connect from my local PC. It says the connection is refused. Also curl http://localhost:80 works but when i do it with the external IP within the Cloud shell it tells me that connection is refused. I am missing something but i cant wrap my head around it. I tried many things, consulting my AI friends but they seem to have no clue. Maybe my base configuration is bad? Im really not sure what to do.

You can use different methods

if you are using flex box:

.container {
    display: flex;
    justify-content: center; /* Horizontal alignment */
    align-items: center; /* Vertical alignment */
}

if you are using grid:

.container {
    display: grid;
place-items: center; /* Shorthand for aligning items both horizontally and vertically */
}

or you can do it with absolute position:

.container {
    position: absolute;
    top: 50%;
    left: 50%;
    transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
}
