first language doesn’t matter, as long as you stick to it. its not like you have a choice when your uni goes and tells you “ok we are starting off with c++”. you just do it and learn it. and most uni grads end up fine in web dev, complete opposite spectrum from low level systems

frosty sequoia
#

i think the ideal first language to pick is the one is mainly used in the person's college

dapper niche

What are your opinions about the gtx 1650 on a laptop is it still viable if I don’t play much games but edit, draw and render

deep hull
# torpid lance What are your opinions about the gtx 1650 on a laptop is it still viable if I do...

The GTX 1650 on a laptop can still be use for editing, drawing, and rendering, even if you don't play many games. While it's not the most powerful graphics card out there, it can handle graphics intensive tasks pretty well.
For casual gaming, it's still decent, though you might need to adjust settings for more demanding games. If you're not dealing with ultra-complex projects, the GTX 1650 should do the job just fine. But, if you're into heavy 3D rendering or working with massive projects, a more powerful GPU might be worth considering.
it depends on your specific needs and what software you use. Check out some reviews and benchmarks for your use cases to get a better idea of its performance.

it's not about old tech 'coz 16:9 is very common these days, too, but ya

frosty sequoia
#

why then

dapper niche
#

when coding, vertical real estate is more important than width

#

16:9 is designed for tv/movie video consumption

#

it's the same aspect ratio as a regular TV

#

for example, the classic thinkpad x61 is 4:3 ratio and the modern surface laptops are 3:2

frosty sequoia
#

then what do you suggest

#

x220?

#

i mean for the most of thinkpads they are limited to 4 gigs of ram only few that can surpass that

dapper niche

I personally use surface laptops. It's just an aspect to consider. Everyone's budgets and needs are different

then what think pad do u suggest

I'm not familiar with the full lineup, but why stick to thinkpads?

frosty sequoia

let me see

#

well its not for me it does not come with hdmi and ethernet ports

#

is it possible to customize thinkpads

dapper niche

yes, to some degree

if you get an adapter it can do hdmi out

#

you can get ethernet port with a usb device most likely

#

but yea, just more things to buy

#

sounds like the yoga is the only 3:2 thinkpad

#

but again, why so stuck on thinkpads?

frosty sequoia

Having trouble fully understanding this, what I comprehended is:
"To insert a variable's value int oa string" (so to make the values into string, even if they're already strings) "plate the letter f immediately before the opening quotation mark."

"Python will replace each variable with the string value when the string is displayed"

#

So basically, it's turning multiple strings into one, right?

#

So anything that follows f" will be a string, always?

frosty sequoia
#

f strings are used to dynamically insert variable values into strings making it easy to create customized and dynamic strings also it allow you to combine strings and variable values resulting in a single string that includes both static and dynamic content

twilit anchor

That means that integer, floats and booleans will be converted into string

frosty sequoia

python will automatically convert these variable

# outer harbor form where can i get help to make an ai bot

Former ML engineer here (currently data engineer) 🙂

Just google "OpenAI bot tutorial with Langchain" or "LLM tutorial".
Most AI bots today are large language models (LLM), but hosting such large models on a server is very expensive (e.g. $1 per hour on aws, and that's a small instance we're talking about).

So most people just make an API call to OpenAI, which is very cheap (for small projects it is couple of cents). For example, I use it to provide some AI-generated "tech fact of the day" to add to the description when I upload a new video for my video diary.

If you need to do something more complex than simply calling OpenAI APIs, you can combine it with LangChain agents and vector databases, or the Haystack framework. They are usually responsible for storing and providing context for the LLM/OpenAI API, which you can use to have a chatbot e.g. which talks to you about the pdf you just uploaded (like the chatpdf app).

Hey guys, I am a beginner at coding rn and I have just started my freshman year in CS. So I just wanted to know if some of you can guide me on what things I should follow while learning the basics and what things I should participate in such as hackathons, certain courses, internships etc. It will be of great help to me:D

remote steeple
#

if you're just starting to learn coding, just pay attention and focus on class. a lot of people find coding is not for them after the first 2 classes.

once you have the basic foundational skills down, then you can explore further on what you want to build. eg if you like game, start exploring game dev and making your own games. more advanced concepts will naturally come as your programs get more complex.

there's no really set path, unless you only code in class. CS is a wide field, can't learn everything in depth.

but yeah just focus on foundational skills for now, since that is what is going to land you job and internships. foundational skills include data structures and algorithms

dapper niche
# tepid rampart Hey guys, I am a beginner at coding rn and I have just started my freshman year ...

My advice is from the US side. Here are a few things, but not complete that I would do if I were to do it all over again...

1 - Try to make it a point to talk to every classmate and exchange contact info. Maybe make it a point to start a conversation with a new person every class meeting. Building your network is so valuable and rewarding, but not apparent when you're younger. It's an investment that will pay off BIG TIME in the future. To me, the main value of school is the people you get to meet and interact with, not what is taught.

2 - Get ridiculously curious. When learning a new concept, tool, or programming feature ask yourself "what would happen if I did X? is it possible to do Y?" Test all your hypotheses and you will learn A LOT.

3 - Watch out for egos. There are going to be a lot of people overcompensating and spitting out a lot of opinions. The fact is most of these individuals are not seasoned professionals and don't have enough wisdom and context. Do your own research and find multiple sources before you decide on your beliefs.

4 - Learn how to learn new technologies. Don't get too focused on learning the technology itself, unless it's relevant to your grades.

5 - People will be zealots for whatever tools, environment, OS, hardware, etc. that they use. This means almost ZERO in the real world. Your value as a developer is what you can do with your skills, not what you use or what you own.

6 - Stay one week+ ahead. Read your material and try to master it the best you can a week before it's supposed to be introduced to you.

7 - Keep reading productivity, mindfulness, and time management books. Take at least one thing from each book and try to apply it to your life on a daily basis.

8 - Be kind to people. Be recognized as a top ranking student. Help people, but never do their work for them.

deep hull
# tepid rampart Hey guys, I am a beginner at coding rn and I have just started my freshman year ...

maybe start with the basics ? grasp concepts like variables, loops, and functions. search up some online platforms like Codecademy, freeCodeCamp, and Coursera are awesome for learning. u can try Hackathons. They're like coding marathons where you brainstorm and build cool projects in a short time. Great way to challenge yourself and meet fellow coders. for Courses? Def. Dig into CS fundamentals like data structures, algorithms, and object oriented programming. They're the building blocks.
hmm Internships? While it's a bit early for those, but u can keep an eye out for opportunities tho. Meanwhile, side projects that can show off your skills and passion.
Everyone starts somewhere, and progress takes time. Connect with peers, join coding clubs, and don't hesitate to ask questions , im sure CS folks are a friendly bunch. You're on a rad journey, so embrace the learning process

# tepid rampart Hey guys, I am a beginner at coding rn and I have just started my freshman year ...

If you're a beginner, first focus on building your basics. It doesn't matter what language you start with cuz basics are mostly same in all of them
For beginners, I would suggest you start with Python as it is the easiest of them all
After learning the basics of the language, like variables, data types, functions, how the syntax works, etc. you can move on to the intermediate level
The intermediate level includes learning about DSA(Data Structures and Algorithms)
DSA is an important concept as it teaches you how data is stored in the system
Don't worry about internships at the beginning, focus on building projects related to the topics you've learned

These things will be enough to help you further.
After that, do some research about which field you wanna pursue, like Web Development, App Development, Cyber Security, etc.

Good luck on your journey

i agree, i have python as my first programming language, now its paying my bills, i mastered it pretty well to be able to build custom ML models and web apps, and i transitioned into building frontend apps using angular and vue and Typescript, since JS and Python is kinda similar (in my opininon), and then i started learning Flutter, which was a huge paradigm shift, but once you get familiar on how to learn technical skills, its surprisingly easy to adapt to other tools, so i wouldnt worry about it

dapper niche
# frosty sequoia bruh i never saw a college that teach py for first year students its usually c

are you from the US? because a ton of schools in the US teach Python as the first language, including top schools like

# tepid rampart just one last question, if I have learnt the basics of C and am learning more, s...

well first, python is not that difficult so learning it will not be hard as you've already learned the basics of C and basics are almost same in all languages
and lets say you learned python and in the future you'll not go into python related field, then in that case it's not a waste as python is object oriented language which will help you either way if you pursue C++, which is improvised version of C (as the core concepts of object oriented language is same for all other languages)

python is one of the most used languages in current time as it's the prioritised language if you wanna pursue artificial intelligence (don't be scared, no one is forcing you to pursue it as it can be scary to some people xD) or web development, as it also use python to some extent

in any case, python will be taught to you further in college, so learning it is not a waste as you don't know what might come in handy

dapper niche
# rotund acorn and im really bad at math so i wanna know if that's something that will hold me ...

I will answer in a way that's more general than "CS" because CS can sometimes mean programming, database engineering, graphics, or algorithm design, etc., which each have a varying degree of mathematics. It just depends on what your specialization will be.

Professionally, there are many jobs that don't require specific advanced math skills. However, the skills that make you good at math will make you good at CS: problem solving, determination, structured logical thought, etc. You shouldn't think that you are innately bad at math, but that your math skills are low and you need to work on improving them. It won't "hold you back," but it'll be an additional topic for you to spend time on studying. There will be a few fields that will directly require math, 3D graphics and physics simulation is an example that comes to mind.

Academically, it depends on what school and program you go to that will have different math requirements.

frosty sequoia
# rotund acorn and im really bad at math so i wanna know if that's something that will hold me ...

bro if u are concerned about math u can absolutely be better in it by hard work just take me as an example i used to be one last ones in math and when the pandemic hit back in 2020 it made it worse for me in my first and second years of hs since it was remote but i just pretended to study while i was playing vg but i came in clutch in the final year and i learned all the basic from first years of hs and i become top 5 in my class so if i can do it u will definitely can but only if u want to suffer at the beginning but trust me its worth the time

# fading stag guys i've been using windows my whole life and now im wondering if switching to ...

You don't have to "switch" to Linux. You can run Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) or run Linux in a virtual machine.

It depends on your school and program, but Linux was not really helpful, useful, or necessary for me other than doing a few exercises in my operating systems course. There are some really cool command line tools that you can use in Linux like grep, but a lot of those have been ported to Windows...for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cygwin

My personal recommendation -- use Linux when you need to and not before. But, if you have time and want to try it for fun or to learn it to prepare for a potential professional Linux environment, no reason not to.

assuming it's not something you did wrong (used it in a way where it would overheat for long periods of time, dropped it, etc) then it's just bad luck. but if you can't afford bad luck, then some brainstorming ideas...

  • buy insurance or reliable extended warranties
  • use a desktop so that parts are more modularly replaceable and cheap
  • get a cheaper system, though a 10+ year old laptop like what you were using should already be on the lower end

other forms of financial management if any of these are possible:

  • get a few gigs or a side jobs here and there
  • sell anything you don't need
  • reduce purchases, buy lower cost items to save up
  • ask for help/loans

Hey It's totally normal to see ppl around u getting laptops or iPads for uni But here's the thing, you're not alone in wondering if you really need one (me too) Having a desktop at home and a smartphone is actually a good setup. Lugging around a laptop might not be necessary if your desktop covers most of your work and you can stay connected with your smartphone. Plus, if you prefer studying at home and have your desktop there, you might be all set. It really depends on your preferences and how you work best. If you're comfortable with what you've got, u dont have to worry about the laptop hyp.

You can read this channel.
But.

  1. Scripting. Unless you enjoy understanding bash scripts, Python is the way to go.
  2. Backend. Python is widely used for backend :). Django, flask, fast api are very popular frameworks.
  3. Machine Learning. Any ML (aka AI) related technology, including ChatGpt, most likely runs on python (e.g. libs: pandas, numpy, scikit learn, pytorch).
  4. Data. There is a lot of traction in data-related pipelies using pyspark. Take a look at databricks tutorials (company whose founders created apache spark, the most popular big data framework (which is much faster than old technologies like MapReduce/Hadoop)), most of them are shown in pyspark (even if the core of the software is written in scala).
  5. Cloud infrastructure. While not as popular as terraform (which has its own language), if you take a look at the CDK repo from AWS (very popular cloud infra library), especially tools for it, it is mostly in python (while the core of the package is javascript, the most widespread usage is for python).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnL9vAFphmE&t -> Python is geared towards children and PhDs, lol.

Easily doable...provided:

1 - you don't spend time making it look pretty.
2 - do not do any drag and drop.
3 - make buttons do things instead of popping up dialog boxes or revealing more elements for more options.

The "hard" part of the front end will be to refresh the layout once you make changes to data.

If you're experienced with a front end framework or very good with JS, you can prob do the project in less than 2 days, but no one knows your skill level and how busy you are with life, the degree of quality you want on the UI, etc. to be able to make a time estimate.

Hi guys I have a question. So me and a friend are working through the Crafting Interpreters book, except instead of writing in Java, we are writing in C++. We are trying to setup all the classes for the AST and the Parser right now. We want the visitor acceptor in my base class to be able to return different types depending on the visitor which visits it.

class Expr {
public:
template<typename T>
virtual T accept(ExprVisitor<T> visitor);
// some other things like members and getters and setters
};

However c++ doesn't allow virtual functions to be templates. For context, this is the visitor interface:

// visitor interface
// Binary, Grouping, Literal and Unary are classes derived from the Expr class
template<typename T>
class ExprVisitor {
public:
    virtual T visit(Binary& expr);
    virtual T visit(Grouping& expr);
    virtual T visit(Literal& expr);
    virtual T visit(Unary& expr);
};

For example, we are trying to make a visitor which would hypothetically find the height of the tree:

class ASTHeight : public ExprVisitor<int> {
     int visit(Binary& expr) override {
          auto visitorInstance = ASTHeight();
          return 1 + max(
               expr.getLeftExpr().accept(visitorInstance),
               expr.getRightExpr().accept(visitorInstance),
          );
     }
     int visit(Unary& expr) override {
          auto visitor = ASTHeight();
          return 1 + expr.getRightExpr().accept(visitorInstance);
     }
     int visit(Literal& expr) override {
          return 1;
     }
     int visit(Grouping& expr) override {
          return 1 + expr.getInnerExpr().accept(visitorInstance);
     }
};

So yeah are there any solutions to this problem pls

Conduct a cryptanalysis and determine the key (substitution table) of the block cipher system; the table is like this:
plaintext ciphertext
00
01
10
11

and i have to complete the table

warped oxide
#

lastpass did suffer attacks but the data stolen was encrypted, so if you had a really strong master and 2FA you're (most likely) good. still.....change your master and sensitive account passowords tho first and then triage the rest. if you had a low entropy master password and no 2FA you are unfortunately screwed (also please stop using sms as 2FA, sim swapping to obtain access to accounts that have 2FA is becoming increasingly popular)

i support those wanting to choose a different manager. but i still don't trust google since their manager isn't zero-knowledge encryption

if you really care about open-source projects, i'd use Bitwarden. i've previously liked Dashlane and put my family on it. If you are willing to pay for a service that is easy to use and values security I've heard Keeper is good from friends. if you're crazy about security and love a project i'd go with KeePass. i've used it before but it's a bitch to work with and soooo ugly. and if you're psycho use pen and paper and create a weird coded language only you understand in case someone ever sees your notebook (:

sorry if I came across quite insulting to your proposition, making a game is actually a very smart idea that I did not consider, Travis Davis the TempleOS designer made a Operating system, based on the idea of having fun with a computer, I will reconsider it, for now I am thinking a creating a text correcting program, like the one in a mobile phone then move on to something bigger.

Again I don't think people are nerds for making video games, but I do think it wasted potential, for something that could actually have an impact in the real world.

#

I do think that we should mostly focus as a species on making more technological advancements towards, environmental growth, preserving the earth's climate, towards uncovering more real world mysteries and developing a layer for a superior society of humans, where we make advancements without the need of wars and undeserved suffering.

hello, right now im doing cs50's speller project and for some reason im getting a ==14354== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s) when running valgrind. it says to look at the if (strcasecmp(word, cursor->word) == 0) in my check function so I'm assuming there's something wrong in either my load or check function that's causing it to compare the char *word with an uninitialized value.
here are my functions

Don’t get caught up in the distro war. The joke is that people say they use Arch to try to impress people but they don’t always have a working machine. Use what works for you. Ubuntu and Debian are great. You can always try other distros for fun but don’t let people put you down for using what’s functional. Arch can be fun to rice. Kali for cyber tools. There’s a reason why raspberry pis run off their own Debian flavor - because it works and you don’t need to fiddle with it. Ubuntu is great too. Mint and ElementaryOS if you want more pretty options. You can try them all! No one is stopping you and they aren’t terribly difficult

it is, i have many computers with many os

but i can still hate the tools i must use

dapper niche

oh, sure

usually self described haters are more sentimental about it and discourage others from using it, etc.

warped oxide
#

like i talked with someone else in the gc last night
windows - gaming, VR, solidworks
mac - work, school, professional creative
linux - TV, media server, embedded projects, IT/cyber

dapper niche
#

I use windows for everything, no problems anywhere. But, I need to decide on what tablet to get if I want to do some gaming on it. Apple processors seem so much better, but I have an Android phone, so it's kinda annoying.

#

a separate linux or chromeos device would also be nice if one needs to do some very secure computing

warped oxide
#

there are reasons to hate all of them, but microsoft is the worst offender in my eyes - company and products. google is also yikes in my eyes. we don't have to argue about it. i'm content with my worldview and know that other people have different needs and can let them be

#

what do you mean by secure computing?

dapper niche
#

logging into financial or banking accounts, journaling, etc. just sensitive data

#

and yea, I agree. I have reasons for what I use, and others have different reasons. It's all good!

warped oxide
#

no chromeos for that then

dapper niche
#

well, you have to log into financial sites, etc.

#

I think ChromeOS is more secure than Windows

#

possibly more than Linux, but I am not a super expert

warped oxide
dapper niche
#

it's very protected on what local applications it can run -- virtually zero

warped oxide
#

i get that but just because it's uncommon doesn't mean it's still not attacked like macos

dapper niche
#

my rationale isn't due to it being uncommon, but due to it being unable to run externally sourced executables

#

the browser itself would have to be attacked, but the same browser is on other OSs

warped oxide
#

there are still vulnerabilities that would be able to allow attackers to execute code. you're welcome to look through the CVEs on the NIST site here https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/search/results?form_type=Basic&results_type=overview&query=chromeos&search_type=all&isCpeNameSearch=false

like you said you're not free from browser based attacks which could happen on any os. and you're still subject to malicious android apps from the play store, but since it looks like chromeos runs a lot of apps in a sandbox, you're likely alright if you just uninstall the bad app. you're more insecure if you enable developer mode just like on every other device that allows that. conclusion - i agree with you, chromeos is more secure from outside attacks

#

i like to include privacy in my security model, but they are ultimately different things and sometimes forget that other people just want security and don't mind forgoing privacy in order to get that

Not really unless you’re super into the retro aesthetic. They are less sharp and have lower resolution so reading text can appear blurry around the edges and strain your eyes. The setup is more time consuming than just plugging in an hdmi cable for today’s monitors and they are bulky and heavy. They are nice for pixel art and old anime since that blur effect works in its favor to create a more smooth image and is why pixel art today looks so different. There’s also the smash community which requires them for tournaments. If you’re going to be watching and playing media made during the time of CRTs, go for it otherwise it’s better to use a current monitor - save your eyes

I love and use old analog and digital tech. It’s what lured me in to watch James’s videos in the first place. The old tech often can be cheaper and easier to fix (if the parts are still available). That being said, if you have the spare cash and want to experiment go ahead and have fun 📺

Hi guys. Can you help me trace someone's account on Facebook?

FYI:
If anyone feels bad about using chatgpt to code (or learn to code) because they think it is cheating (e.g. some professors in college can think that), just know that most developers use it at work, every day (or similar tool like Codepilot, Codewhisperer etc).
Recently I had to parse about 300 variants of dates from a large dataset that was messed up. It is trivial task, it just takes a lot of time.

With chatgpt it took about 3 hours. It messes up a lot of things, but it gives you a good foundation to work with.

did anyone have idea about from where can I learn flutter?

dart language

remote steeple
#

flutter is not the best for beginners. if you are familiar with programming, you can just read the docs. dart borrows from a lot of other popular languages.

but I am assuming you're not since you're asking here. if you want to give mobile development a try, apple has some really good resources for swift. Google probably has some for kotlin and Android

Hey guy this is gonna be quite a crazy question, but if anyone is able to answer your legit an absolute legend and I hope it'll help anyone else who sees this message who is trying to implement these sorts of habits into their lives.

Basically, what I'm asking for is a computer macro program. Basically what I want it to do is every friday(so long as my computer is turned on), it will force itself into my notes app and put me in a new note. This is basically for me to force myself to journal every friday, which is a habit I'm willing to forcingly implement.
I'm expecting some sort of app/program that records my computer movement(while im writing the program) and then applies it at the particular date and time I set it to(which will be every friday 6 pm).

so yeah if anyone thinks they know a program or way to aid me achieve this goal, please DM me or ping me here tysm

remote steeple
#

not a program but you could accomplish something like this pretty easy with a python script running in the background. not sure of any specific programs that do something like that though

tepid aurora
#

how hard would that be for me to do

#

and would i needa like use visual code studio for that

#

i guess i could learn a bit here and there, if it truly is a simple task, althought you @remote steeple yourself seem pretty advanced judging off how many questions ive seen you answer above, so your simple may not be my simple, however I am up to learn i guess

remote steeple
#

having vscode would make it easier on yourself

#

Vs studio is something completely different

tepid aurora
remote steeple
#

yeah there are some official python plugins for it that helps

remote steeple
#

as for difficulty, I think a chat AI should be able to do it

#

just ask it for what you want to do

#

and ask clarifying questions

tepid aurora
#

ye ik what they are

#

but

#

how would they run a script

#

on my computer

#

to open an app

#

at a certain time every week

remote steeple
#

they'll help you write the script, as for running it, you'll have to do more research on that for your specific operating system

#

but you can also ask them how to do so

tepid aurora
#

hm

#

what do you suggest i do here then

#

i'm merely trying to implement a simple weekly habit

remote steeple
#

start asking the chat AI of your choice is what id recommend, they can answer most questions and I'm 99% certain they can write the script for you if you ask the right questions

tepid aurora
#

your quite supportive over AI to solve me problems

i like that

i'll give it a go

# fading stag Is the zero to mastery python course worth my time as a beginner and compsci stu...

from what i know, if you're just starting with Python and you're a cs student, is pretty engaging, and he covers a lot of practical stuff. If you're a total beginner, it's a great way to get into it. But if you alr know some Python, you might find parts of it a bit basic.there are hands-on projects and coding exercises and that's where the real learning happens. Just make sure you've got the time for it, and it fits your budget. check out reviews from others who've taken it

# tepid aurora Hey guy this is gonna be quite a crazy question, but if anyone is able to answer...

yo, have you done that yet?

in Linux there's cron jobs that execute every specific time, and on Windows there is Task Scheduler, this is for executing repeatedly for example on friday .. the pb with them is u gotta specify an end date tho, they wont run forever, but u can overcome this by setting a very future date, years to come. Idk what OS you use tbh

I'm not sure what you mean force you into your note taking program, do you want to open that note app every friday? You can do that using either of them, but on Windows using task scheduler it's very straight forward on a GUI app with buttons etc, not commands

#

You don't need programming to do that, they alrdy exist as a part of operating systems.. and about learning coding when younger, it's not that hard(to the extent it's dependent on age, it isn't) and age doesn't matter at all

lemme use my wizard skills and guess the previous slide, the array a is defined with only 10 indexes a[10] and starting from 0 till num = 10 including 0 and 10 will give 11 indexes not 10, even if user provided a num higher than 10 the if statement wont run. to fix replace num<=10 with num <10 cuz the 10th array index is referred with num 9, array indexes start from 0
